- We were expecting you. The others are already here, so we can start immediately- she said to the newcomers.
The room was a large and well-illuminated room, receiving the light from the wide windows facing the morning sun. The rectangular table was completed one the members of the RDD and SDD were in their places. At the head of the table, Rudolf Heisenberg didn’t waste another minute to start the important reunion.
- Good morning to you all, I hope all of you are doing well. As you may know, later this morning we will receive the visit of the media, so I’ll be handling the interview in the conference room. Since I’ll talk about news of public order there, I see no need to repeat those here as well – the president of the Heisen Institute took a pause to drink some water, the he continue – Regarding those nonpublic issues, were currently under negotiations with the Kriegsministerium and the Außenministerium to deal with both internal and international freedom of movement. After our students will complete their training, we shall send them in national missions to let them have some experience. Then, it will be necessary to send them to other nations, depending what directives we receive from the State Department. I’m counting on you to train them well, Henry.
- Leave it to me, Mr. President – replied the Colonel – Following the program written by Miss Wittich, those kids will be able to handle anything!
- I read her report regarding the training schedule already, so there is no need to discuss the details – Heisenberg then turned to a woman wearing a white coat - Doctor Rehn, are you done with the list of the members for the medical team we will send with our students to the training camp?
- Affirmative, sir! – Rose Rehn, doctress and head of the Medical Department, remained silent in her sit, while the talking was carried by her young female assistant, Milka Nevalainen – We have compiled the list of twelve members of the medical team. Each of them had experience in the field regarding treating issues linked to the phenomena of DunkelLicht energy, also well educated in the medicine field, especially in cases of emergency. All of them come from outside with the possibility to be integrated into our facility, as requested.
- Good to hear you found them in time. Thanks, Miss Nevalainen – Heisenberg allowed the assistant to take her sit again – Then, I’d have some updates regarding the development of those shields, Professor Rehn.
- Oh, can I do it, dad? – Tea rose her hand and asked her father to be allowed to do the report.
- Not this time, Tea – said Alex, standing up – But I promise you next time will be your turn.
- I’ll remember it, so don’t think you will be able to trick me next time! – the cute expression of Tea warmed everyone’s hearths.
- So – started Alex – Following recent discoveries, we are giving the last adjustments to the prototype of shield that will be able to neutralize to a certain extent both Dunkel and Licht energies. It should be ready in about three days. Afterwards, we can proceed with the tests. I have to say, though, this first prototype in theory could handle around 20 Hess, which it roughly can be around 20 Mega joule of energy. Due to the natural instability of this energy, the quantity of energy absorbed by the shield could vary, but as we read on recent reports regarding one of the battles of our students, it seems that, as long as a certain source of energy is higher in density of an incoming radiation of the same kind of energy, the first will be able to absorb one hundred percent of the energy received. Also, considering the dimension of the crystal used to embed the energy, it’s hard to determinate whether the shield will be able to handle the absorbed energy without going through a phase of instability. Also, it’s important to understand that…
- Isä! – Tea, calling his father, snapped him out from his monologue – Nobody is getting what you’re babbling!
- Ehem… - Alex cleared his voice, scratching his head – Sorry, I guess I gave too many unnecessary details. What I meant to say is that in three days we’ll have two shields ready for tests. We require support from Fürst's men to carry on the tests, two for energy type. Then I’d be able to tell you when and if there is the possibility to mass produce them.
- Thank you, Professor – Heisenberg, showing some relief for the end of the long and difficult intervention of the scientist – Then, I guess it’s time to hear from you, Ms. Ehrenfeld, about the academic performance of our future national heroes.
- You have quite the expectative regarding those kids, aren’t you? – Ms. Erna Ehrenfeld, secretary of the Educational Department and teacher to the students at Heisen, stood up to make her speech – I have to say that, looking only at grades, among our students barely half of them is keeping an eye on those. If this was a normal high school, I would have all of them doing summer repetitions in many subjects, if they would have the chance to be promoted this year.
- I see – Heisenberg brushed his mustache while thinking – Indeed, grades are important, but considering those kids joined us to be used in future as protectors of the peace, I think is not a big problem if they are bad in one or two subjects.
- I knew you would answer something like that – Ehrenfeld said – So, I made each teacher prepare a series of exercises easy to complete for them during the breaks of their physical training. I think it is not a good idea to made them consider less important their studies only because of that future you want for them. They will need all the instruments they can gather to freely decide for themselves their future. That is the meaning of education, isn’t it, President?
- You have a point in there… Very well. Miss Wittich – Heisenberg turned to the secretary of the SDD – I leave to you the integration of Ms. Ehrenfeld’s study program into their routine during their training.
- Yessir! – simply answered Wittich.
- Oh, and can you tell us regarding the new student? – asked Heisenberg.
- Right, the young Mühle. He is a diligent student, nothing but praise I can talk in his regard. He even had showed better grades than Keller and Okami in every single subject.
- I see, those are wonderful news, indeed! – said Heisenberg – His example could be used to show to the whole country the efficiency of our academic system, and that is possible to be part of our Institute without having to take the course of a Special Defense Unit. Regarding his medical condition, Doctor Rehn…
- … - the doctress addressed the answer to her assistant, which listened carefully to the words said in their mother tongue.
- Got it! – said Milka after hearing the answer from her superior – Doctor Rose wants me to refer to you that the kid is stable. We’re checking him once every two days, and his values of energy variation are really small, which is strange. He won’t have any problem to keep studying as he’s doing, but the Doctor wants that he is absolutely cut out from training regarding his energy use. We want to observe his situation better, so we could find some way to control the oscillation of DunkelLicht energy.
- Thanks, Miss Nevalainen. And thank you everyone for your time. Next meeting shall be the day 28th of May. You can go now.
With these last words, Heisenberg took his leave with Ms. Biel towards the Conference Room to welcome the mass media. The other members of the assembly decided to go together to the rest room in that Department to relax for a while. Tea didn’t lose the chance to speak to her mother. Even if the Rehn family lived and worked in the same place, they were able to see each other altogether rarely in recent times due to their respective duties. The Colonel caught the chance to chat a little more with Alex and joke around him. The secretaries instead had a little lively chat in which they discussed about their daily hardships at work, story of romance and whatsoever. Even if for some minutes, the administration of Heisen took their time to take it easy for a change.
