There’s something strange with him. He’s got a strange cloth around his eyes, tonight. The last time he had something like this on was when he’d cut his hand. Could he have hurt his eyes? I don’t smell any blood though…
He’s left his book open again. This time he only wrote three words: “wake me up”. Wait… does he want me to wake him up? W-why? He’ll see me and I’ll have to go back. Should I do this? OK, yes. I’m gonna do it.
I gently shook his arm and he woke up with a start. “H-hello?! Are you there?” I backed up with a gasp. “Yes! You are. I heard you.” I’m holding my breath now. “It’s OK, I have a blindfold on.” He looked around the room with a bright smile, pointing to the cloth around his eyes. “This way I can’t look at you and you won’t have to leave. Pretty smart, huh?” I’m staring at him wondering if I should say anything. Something about his face, and his bare chest as he’s sat up, they’re making my heart race.
“H-hi…” I spoke! I actually said something to him. What have I done? I knew I shouldn’t have-
“Hi! Wow, this is incredible. I liked your drawing, by the way. You’re pretty cute if that’s anything to go off of.” His laugh is so full and joyous. My face, why is it so warm? What’s happened to his face? His cheeks have suddenly filled with blood. “So, hmm, what do you want to talk about? I’ve never really communed with a demon before. Granted, you seem a lot nicer than the demons in most stories I’ve heard.”
“You… You think I’m nice?” I did it again! I need to stop this. “I could kill you here on the spot! I could slit your throat or spill your entrails with minimal effort. You think I’m cute? H-how dare a human, uh, speak to me that… way.” That last part, most likely, didn’t sound too convincing.
“Hahaha! I think if you’d wanted to do that, you would’ve done it a long time ago. You’ve certainly had many chances. It was you who healed my hand too, wasn’t it? Well, that’s kind of the opposite of what you’re saying you’ll do.” He’s looking around confidently. He think he has me pegged, though I must admit he’s right on all of those accounts. “So if I’m wrong, well… I guess you could kill me right now. If I’m right, then I’m sure you wouldn’t mind staying and talking to me some more. I don’t have to get up early tomorrow so it’s no trouble to me.” There’s that smile again. It’s carefree and radiant, a smile warm enough to melt ice.
“I suppose I could stay a little longer. I’m not saying that you’re right! I’m just, um, getting to know my prey!”
His chuckle tickles my ears. “Yeah, I’m sure. Well, I suppose I should ask what your name is, shouldn’t I? Having someone come into your home almost every night, and I don’t even know their name. What kind of host am I?” I’ll never get tired of that laugh.
Should I tell him my name though? Is this crossing the line? A name is powerful for us, it can summon us if the holder knows the correct steps. I doubt this human would be even close to that level of sorcery… And even if he was, would I truly mind him summoning me? We all have many names but they’re all equally powerful. I could pick one he’s not likely to know. “You can call me Kichi.”
“Kichi…” When he said my name: there was a pull in me. Did I make the right choice. “Like Key Chi. The key to the chi in the soul… Haha, what am I even saying? Anyway, I like it. It’s a fitting name. I’m guessing that, since you’ve been watching me for so long, you already know my name.”
“Yes, I do.” I’ll never forget his name. The name of the human that held my fascination. The human who got me to speak.
“OK, well now that names are out of the way, what do you want know about me? Er, well, I suppose you must already know almost everything about me. Hmm, I guess if you’ve only been watching me in my sleep though, you might not.” Does the back of his head itch? Perhaps he’s been bitten and he must keep scratching it. “Unless you’re reading my mind while I sleep. That’d be- I’m rambling. I should just let you speak.”
“I-I haven’t been reading your mind. I, actually don’t know that much about you. I’ve only ever seen what’s been in your room. Even then, I’m not sure what most of these things are or what they mean. The lightbox you used the other night, for example. It buzzed like a beast and blinded you.”
“Light box? Buzzing like a… Oh! You meant my phone!” His laugh makes my embarrassment dissipate instantly. “Here, it’s on the bedside table. You can pick it up if you want.” It’s somewhat cold in my hands. A metal casing but a glass cover? What is this thing? “OK, now you see the little button at the bottom? Press it.” Ah! I dropped it! It was too bright… “What was that? Did you drop it?”
“... Y-yes.” What punishment awaits me? I’ve dropped his magic device.
“Haha, that’s fine.” Hmm? “I’m guessing I left the brightness on too high, huh? Here, let me help you out.” Wait, what is he doing? Why is he getting out of his bed. I must get away from him. He… Ah. I’ve never seen his whole body like this. He’s only wearing a cloth around midsection. My body is getting warm. “Ah, here it is. OK, I’m gonna have to take off my blindfold to do this, so I’ll start spinning slowly. Tell me to stop when my back is to you, alright?”
“Alright… Stop.” He’s raised the fabric around his eyes and turned the device back on. How is he doing that?! The light is getting dimmer! Perhaps he is a sorcerer.
“If you can see in the dark so well, I’d bet the bright light must’ve really hurt. I probably should’ve thought about that.” He’s lowering the fabric again and turning back to me. He has a different smile this time. It’s not the wide, bright smile from before, it’s a smaller yet somehow warmer smile. Is his hand out to hand me the device, again? Why would a sorcerer hand over a magic device so easily? Especially to one of my kind. “Am I facing the wrong way? I was gonna give the phone back to you but I must look like an idiot if I’m handing this to the air!” That wide smile has returned. The laugh, too, forces me to smile in return.
“N-no. You’re facing the right direction. I’m sorry.” The device is back in my hands. I’m squinting away, I don’t want to be blinded again. Ah, while still a bit bright for my eyes, I can stand looking at it now. The device must be a seeing portal to another dimension. It’s showing a dense forest that must be far away. There are numbers and symbols floating above the forest as well. What is this contraption? “Are you… some form of wizard? Or perhaps warlock? You’re so trusting to hand over a magical device like this to a demon, such as myself.”
“A wizard? Haha, no! I wish! That’s just a cell phone. It lets you talk to people far away, take photos, search the web, watch videos, play games, and a lot more.” The bite on his head must itch again. “I guess that does sound pretty magical when you actually realize how much it can do. But it’s just technology. No magic required.”
“This was man made? I don’t understand what you meant by most of those words, however. Take a photo? Why would you like to search a spider’s web? I understand playing a game but what is a video?” The portal seems to only appear on one side of the device. The other shows a fruit shape with a bit in it. What could this fruit be for?
“Oh man… I have a lot to show you, my demonic friend. Come back tomorrow night and I’ll show you all the amazing things it has to offer. Deal?”
His hand is outstretched. Does he want me to shake it? Like a pact… What could one more night hurt? “... Deal.” His grip is firm.
