Alison was caught off guard to see Evan dressed so casually. And with flowers. He looked up and smiled, seemingly nervous. He stood away from the wall as Alison walked up to him.
"Flowers?" she asked, noticing that they were different from earth's. She wasn't sure why she was surprised by that.
"To be honest, Madson insisted," Evan replied. Alison smiled, amused by the sheriff's demands. He handed her the flowers, which she took graciously.
"Alright, where are you taking me first? Are we going to visit the Town Hall again?" Alison asked, teasing him a little. He chuckled and shook his head.
"I thought that I would take you around the places you might not have seen so far," he suggested, walking with her down the street. Walking with Evan was different than Chester, mostly since it seemed more casual. He didn't insist on escorting her, but was fine just walking side by side.
Evan's tour was different from Chester's anecdotal tour. Evan had a more historical view of the town, and shared the events that happened nearly a hundred years prior. It almost seemed like a ghost tour, only without haunting tales.
"So, did you get time off today for this?" Alison asked.
"Sort of. Madson demanded that I take the last half of my shift off today. I would have just taken a long lunch, but he said it was a slow day," Evan sighed, visibly stressed. "I just don't think he can handle the twins and the station on his own. He's not the most responsible man."
"I'm sure everything will be fine."
"Speaking of which, the twins would love to meet you if you want to go see them," Evan smiled.
"Sure," Alison answered. Evan's smile faded.
"Really?"
"I don't see why not. Unless you have more places to show me," she answered as he paused in thought. Then he nodded.
"I'm sure it'll be fine," he muttered before turning down the street toward the station. Alison bit her lip, wondering what the problem could be.
The station seemed intact, and larger than Alison had anticipated. She wondered if the jail was in the building. Evan showed her in and Alison saw a young woman sitting at the front desk. She had short black hair that fell in her face as she filed her nails. Evan coughed, hoping that she would notice them and remove her feet off the desk. She didn't.
"Kim," Evan groaned, finally catching her attention.
"What's with the civilian get up?" she asked, moving her feet. Alison waved as she could see Kim better. "Did you get yourself a girlfriend? I didn't know you had it in you."
"Alison, this is Kim, one of our officers. She's in charge of the station when I'm gone," Evan explained. Kim waved, now leaning over the table to stare at Alison.
"Nice to meet you," Alison smiled.
"How come I haven't seen you around? Are you from Coverlend? I feel like she's from Coverlend," Kim mentioned. Alison glanced over at Evan, who looked like he was three words away from leaving the station.
"She came through the gateway from earth," Evan explained.
"That's incredible!" Kim smiled, genuinely impressed. Alison forced a smile, not really wanting to explain herself for the twentieth time.
"Where's your brother?" he sighed.
"Probably in the back, where he usually is," Kim answered, turning her attention to Alison again. "If you're from earth, then why do you have Paka eyes?"
"Her parents are from here, but she was born on earth," Evan chimed in, glancing down the hallway. Kim hummed.
"Interesting. And now your dating Evan?" Kim asked as Alison shook her head.
"I just met him a few days ago. I don't think that's long enough to start dating," Alison informed. Kim hummed again.
"Where's Jim?" Evan asked again. Kim sighed and stood up before pointing down the hallway.
"He's probably doing paperwork that your father left him," Kim answered shortly. Evan pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Again?" he groaned, wondering if he was the only adult there.
"You need to talk to him about this. Jim has better things to do than clean up Madson's messes," Kim pointed out. Evan held back a retort, and sighed instead.
"Look, I'll mention it again and see what he says. I can't guarantee anything will change," he exhaled.
"Well, it was nice meeting your friend, and I hope to see you both around," Kim smiled. Alison agreed as they walked down the hall that Kim pointed toward. Evan said nothing as they walked, seemingly annoyed.
"Does Madson pull this a lot?" she whispered.
"Unfortunately. I don't think he really takes the job seriously, but it is what is I guess. There's not much I can do about it without doing all the work myself," Evan replied, shaking his head. Suddenly, a man violently opened a door in front of them. He looked nearly identical to Kim, so Alison guessed that this was Jim.
"Evan! You have to stop this!" Jim shouted, pointing in the room. Evan and Alison peeked in, finding boxes of paperwork and pens everywhere. "He started doing it and then assigned it to me!"
"Okay, I'm sorry. I'll deal with him. Why don't you go on patrol for a little bit. Where is Madson anyway?" Evan negotiated, calming Jim down.
"Hell if I know! Probably to go bother that old man again. And he has the audacity to call us irresponsible," Jim scoffed, folding his arms. Evan sighed again, running his hand through his hair.
"This is why I can't take time off," he grumbled. "Go on patrol, Jim, and I'll go find Madson. I'll make sure he cleans this up."
"Thanks, Evan," Jim whispered before storming away. Alison watched him leave before turning to Evan.
"Why didn't you send him to find Madson? Since he's on duty?" she wondered.
"Because the last thing we need is an officer arguing with the sheriff at town hall. It's easier to clean up this way. Jim has a short temper, which doesn't mix well with Madson's quick temper. Either way, it's easier to keep them apart," Evan explained, leading her out of the station again. "I can walk you to your house if you'd like."
"No, it's fine. I'll go with you to the town hall. I need to see Frederick anyway," Alison stated. Evan nodded, walking with her to the town center.
The place was relatively deserted, as it was reaching dinner time. Many were returning home from work to be with their families. Alison sighed, wondering if Frederick had ever returned to his house in the last few months. They walked into the town hall, and there was Madson yelling outside of Frederick's door again. Alison just stared, wondering how old these two men really were.
"You require too much paperwork!" Madson shouted, banging on the door with his fist.
"The law requires that much paperwork! I don't make the laws, the queen does! If you want less paperwork, then you have to talk to her!" a deep voice responded. Alison sighed at the sound of her grandfather's voice.
"Why don't you talk to the queen about it?!"
"You're the one with the problem!"
"Oh my lord," Evan whispered, embarrassed and exasperated. Alison sighed, wondering if she should have gone home instead. The deputy left her side to talk to Madson. Evan raised his voice, surprising Madson. Even Frederick opened the door to see what had happened. "When you give me time off, don't go cause more trouble! You were the one who insisted I take the night off! This is why I protest! You can't handle your duties without me there!"
"That's not true-" Madson argued.
"No, it is, and right now, I want you to go back to the station and clean up that mess that you left for Jim," Evan directed as the sheriff sighed. Madson nodded and stepped away from the door. "Mayor Charwell, I apologize for disturbing you this late. Although, if I may, I would suggest that you go home and spend time with your granddaughter. Goodnight."
"Goodnight," Frederick whispered, flabbergasted by Evan. The deputy followed the sheriff to the stairs, where he touched Alison's shoulder as well.
"I'll take you home as well," Evan smiled. Alison smiled back and nodded, following the two officers out of the town hall.
