A Vampire In Salem

Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Jul 27, 2018

It has been a couple weeks since Robert turned me and I still can't believe it happened. Never in my wildest dreams could I have thought Robert was a vampire.

All I remember from the experience was the initial fear that completely took hold of me and then waking up to find him gone. Absolutely no trace of him was left. The damn coward hasn't shown his face since that terrible night.

To survive, I've been feeding off of animals. There was entirely no way I was going to feed on a human being. There was no way I'd turn into something like him.

I still didn't quite understand what his goal was in doing this. He certainly didn't mean to kill me. He easily could have. He wanted me like this, but why? It didn't make any sense.

Since I was turned, I figured it best to stay away from civilization for a while. I can't risk anyone finding out something is wrong with me with the witch trials getting more and more frequent each day. If I step one foot out of line... I'm done for. I had to keep my head low for my own protection. I just hope no one finds it too strange that I haven't shown my face in a while.

I mostly spend my days at home, writing in my journal, gardening, or reading. It sounds boring to most people, but I'm perfectly content with it. It is actually quite comforting to do semi-normal activities. It helps me feel human, despite my being the precise opposite.

Due to my being alone all the time, I am startled when there is a harsh knocking on my front door. Perhaps it was someone I knew coming to check up on me. I didn't have many friends, Robert made sure of that, but I did have a few. As soon as Robert crossed my mind, I had a thought I had never hoped to have... What if that was Robert?

After that thought came and went, I was even more reluctant to open the door. I never wanted to see that monster again.

The knocking came again. This time it was a bit louder and slightly more aggressive. If I didn't open the door, whoever was there may very well break it down, and I couldn't have that. I don't have the money or tools to fix a broken door.

I took a deep breath and reached out with a shaky hand. The doorknob gave me an electric shock once my fingertips touched it. Maybe it was a sign to not open the door.

The knocking came again, and since I was so close, it startled me. I jumped a little and quickly turned the doorknob and swung open the door to see two men from the town council standing there.

"Hello, Mrs. Evans. We have received word of you participating in some strange practices. Do we have permission to come in?" He asked. He was very polite for a councilman. Judging by what they do to those poor women on a daily basis, I did not expect that.

"Uh... Yes of course. Come in.". I move back and open the door wider so that they may enter without interference from me.

They walk in, and the man who has done all the talking so far smiled warmly, another thing I did not expect from a councilman. They position themselves in her living room and take a seat on her couch.

"Please, Mrs. Eller, take a seat." the kind councilman said. "My name is David and this is Alexander."

I sit down as I was told. "Nice to meet you both..." I state, trying to be as polite as possible.

"Mrs. Evans, some people have reported seeing you whispering to yourself... whispering to yourself in dead tongues. Would you mind explaining to us what that's all about?"

I look at the men, utterly confused. "I'm sorry sir, but I'm afraid I have no idea what you're talking about. Who has given you this information?" I ask.

"I cannot tell you that Mrs. Evans. The witness has asked to remain anonymous. Now if you cannot tell me where you were and what you were doing two nights ago at precisely eight pm, I'm afraid I'll have to arrest you for suspected witchcraft, and you will face the court in the morning." His tone suddenly changed from polite to stern and almost cold.

"I was here sir... In my home. I was most likely reading like I usually do at night before bed. I have not been in the village very often since my husband left... I guess you can say I was a bit ashamed." That was the first lie I told in a while, and it disgusted me. I knew that it would work though, at least for a little. Most men expect their women to obey them and if they leave, it is almost always blamed on the wife.

"I see... well we'll visit the council and let you know when the final judgment is placed.". The two men stand up, and David smiled warmly. "Have a nice night Mrs. Evans. Thank you for your cooperation.".

After they nodded their heads and left my house, I almost collapsed with relief. I could almost cry. Of course, I didn't know for sure whether they bought the lie or not but it got them to leave, and that alone was a huge relief.

I went to bed that night, frightened of the future and confused about how I was reported for witchcraft when I haven't been in town for weeks. Although I was mostly scared for the days to come, I also had a small glimmer of hope.
