The remainder of the day went slowly. I was told people could visit me, but that was mainly loved ones. I have no more loved ones left. I was betrayed by my husband, and my parents were dead. They had died from smallpox before I married Robert.
The only people who were brave enough to visit me were people who I called my friends. She came and brought me fresh bread with a sad smile, Christina came and ranted to me about how stupid I was, and the last person to visit was Robert.
When he did, it was around eight p.m. I had already eaten the sludge they call food, and I was munching on the bread that Cecelia had left.
"Who gave that to you?" He asked. Of course, that was his first question.
"Cecelia came by and brought it for me" I responded, avoiding looking in his direction. I couldn't look at him. I couldn't look at the man that I used to love.
"Well, that was nice of her.".
"Yes, it was" I sighed and put the bread aside. "What do you want?".
"I wanted to see my lovely wife" he smirked.
I look up at him with a glare "Don't you dare call me that. I no longer consider you my husband. You are a traitor. You're trying to murder me!"
"Murder you? Not at all! Don't you know anything about what you are?" He asked, his smirk still present.
I stare at him, utterly confused.
"The only things that can kill a vampire is beheading them, a wooden stake through the heart, or being burned alive." He stated simply.
"But you plan to burn me at the stake eventually. Am I right?"
"Not necessarily. Your fate at the end of the trials is decided by the public. They will choose whether to hang or burn you."
I shudder at the thought. Both options didn't seem very comfortable... It was either endure the scorching heat of fire upon my skin or hang by my neck until dead, or in my case... until I pass out.
"What was the point of all this? Why are you doing this to me?" I ask. It was still not clear to me why he would put me through this hell... Why he would do this to someone he supposedly loved?
"I want to leave Salem Kathryn. But since we are married, I can't leave without you, and I knew that you wouldn't want to leave your hometown." He paused and smiled slightly. "But if you are tried as a witch, no one will want you here anymore, and when you're 'dead', we'll be able to leave."
"What makes you think I'll ever leave with you?" I glare. His plan was utterly insane. If he just wanted to leave, he should just do it. I was completely fine with him leaving me behind.
"You don't have a choice my dear" his grin appeared again, this time it had a dark ambiance about it that sent chills down my spine.
"Just leave... Please leave." I look up at him with sad eyes.
He nods and turns, exiting through the way he came.
That night, I didn't sleep very well. I knew there was more to what he said. I knew there was more to what he wanted. It could not just be that he wanted to leave Salem. What person in their right mind would go to this kind of extreme just to move?
The next morning I am woken up at around five thirty in the morning. A half hour before my first trial was supposed to begin.
The first trial was going to be the dunking trial. The test in which if the accused sank, they were innocent. If they float, they were practicing witchcraft.
I didn't know whether vampires sink or float so this should be interesting...
The guards lifted me up from the ground, shackled my hands behind my back, and lead me outside to a horse. They lifted me onto the back of the horse and immediately started riding off towards the town lake.
As we neared, there was already a crowd surrounding the lake. It seemed as if the entire town of Salem were there to see whether she sunk or floated.
Robert was there, at the center of it all... As expected.
The guards help me off the horse and lead me to the edge of the lake. Robert walked over and proceeded to tie a rope around my ankles so that I wouldn't be able to cheat by swimming.
"Just relax and float," he said quietly, but he was smirking. It was if he were trying to seem comforting, but I knew him... I knew he wasn't actually trying to comfort me.
They tied another rope, a longer one, around her waist so that they may pull her out of the water. They then began to lift her and carry her into the water.
The water was cold. Bone-chilling cold. It was the kind of water that could cause fast frostbite if you stay in for more than ten minutes.
"What do you say, folks? Does she sink or does she float?" Robert addressed the crowd.
The crowd gave a resounding "Float!"
How sadistic can the town of Salem get? They seemed to want me to be a witch. It was almost as if this were entertainment to them. Did people really enjoy watching supposed witches get tortured like this?
Robert turned to the men holding me up and nodded. They then dropped me into the water.
My body tensed immediately as if it were trying to close its pores so the ice cold water wouldn't seep through them. I felt my skin tighten. My bodies natural reaction was to try to swim and get out but I couldn't due to the binds.
I close my eyes, take deep breaths, and the world around me began to sound warped. Was I underwater? No... that couldn't be. I slowly open my eyes to see the gray of the sky and the white clouds. Some trees were also visible. I was floating...
Before I could fully register what that meant, I heard cries from the crowd. "Witch! Kill her! Hang her!". I wanted to cry. The people I've known all my life have turned on me in just one day. It was infallible.
I closed my eyes again and suddenly heard splashing... lots of splashing. I then felt two, strong, broad hands grip my shoulders and force me under the water.
The shock of the cold surrounding my head came first. It's one thing when your body is immersed in the water, but as soon as your head is under, it's a whole new feeling.
My eyes widen, and I begin to squirm. The cold water burned my corneas, but I didn't care. I needed to get to the surface.
I could feel a big ball in my throat begin to surface as I struggled to breathe.
'No... No this can't be happening. I can't die by drowning! Why does this hurt so much?' I thought to myself.
My throat tightened even more, and the murky darkness of the water began to seem hazy. I fought to keep my eyes open for as long as possible, but I failed.
The warped sounds of the town slowly faded into nothingness as my eyes closed and my mind went unconscious.
