The students looked at each other in confusion. What did he mean with 'Zodiacs'? Small whispers began between some of them, only audible to those invested in the conversations. Raión, who wasn't part of any sort of conversation at all, crossed his arms and leaned back in the couch.
"The hell do you mean with that?" he asked. The headmaster hummed in amusement and let it fade into a chuckled.
"Allow me to explain" he simply said and walked behind his desk. He touched the circular pod that was built into the wooden desk and a bright turquoise screen appeared over it, hovering slightly above the pod and illuminating the room.
"For centuries Vanea has been protected by twelve, sometimes thirteen, Celestial entities. Or, more accurately, Zodiacs" the headmaster began and moved his hand over the screen, triggering a series of old paintings to flash over the screen, making the screen bigger as more paintings appeared and disappeared. "I'm certain you're all familiar with the legend"
The thirteen students looked at the screen in awe, their faces lit up by the soft light.
"The Zodiacs have fought countless of battles, faced great danger, and risked their lives, just to keep us Vanerians safe. But as you know, nothing can live forever, so the role of the Zodiacs are passed down to a new generation every 100 years" the headmaster swiped his hand over the screen and the old paintings were replaced with a wheel that displayed twelve symbols and several group photos, all from different time eras. "And now, it's time for the title to be passed down to you"
Zams eyes narrowed and he leaned forward a bit, inspecting the symbols as they felt too familiar. He bit his bottom lip and thought. Then it hit him. His tattoo! Everyone's tattoo! He nudged Yune with his elbow to get his attention.
"Our tattoos, they're the symbols of the zodiacs!" he explained and nodded to the back of Yunes neck. "You're cancer!"
"Correct, a sign of water along with Scorpio and Pisces, Weide and Audra" the headmaster nodded to the two teenagers who were sitting beside each other in one of the couches and continued. "Signs of emotion and affection, compassion and the very unconditional love that binds us all together" Audra glanced back at the boy next to her, the words spoken by the headmaster echoing through her head. Affection, Compassion, and Love. A small blush made its way onto her cheeks and forced her to quickly turn her sight to the professors. To her relief, the headmaster was about to further add on to what he'd already said.
"Emitting from the same light, we have the air signs. Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Derin, Adriam and Zam. You're the signs of intelligence, creativity and the many ways of communication as well as philosophy and curiosity" The corners of the named student's mouths rose, resulting in small grin's of delight.
"In contrast, we have the earth signs. Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, this century being Terrie, Tarrio, Livíne and Feíx. Also a duo is sharing sign this generation"
"Which is really exciting since the last duo was 800 years ago!" Shaula jumped in. Her eyes were shining with happiness as she smiled widely at the twins who rather awkwardly smiled back, not really sure how to react.
The headmaster chuckled wholeheartedly. "Yes it was a while ago" he agreed. His glance fell onto the group photos that were still flashing over the screen, his eyes full of fondness. Like a parent looking through their children's old photo albums.
The headmaster stayed quiet, eyes locked on the photos, a lot longer than any of the others were expecting. Etamin turned his head too look at the older and cleared his throat as audible as he could. The headmaster blinked a few times before he broke free from the trance-like state he'd been in. He locked eyes with the other teachers with a look that only said one thing. What?
"The earth signs" Etamin reminded through a whisper.
"Oh, right. Excuse me" the headmaster apologized while he moved the screen away from his face so he would get distracted again.
"Zodiacs of earth are of loyalty, honesty, determination and the grounded maturity many live without" the headmaster said. Raión snorted, causing the other students and professors to look at him.
"Maturity? Those four?" he said and used his thumb to point to his left, where the four previously named students were seated. He let out a breathy chuckle and shook his head. "Please"
"You don't even know us" Feíx pointed out and crossed his arms. Raión shrugged. "Perhaps, but I wouldn't call running into a dark, unfamiliar hallway maturity to be honest. More like, stupidity"
"You were the first to follow after!" Feíx stated.
"Maybe, but you were the first to walk in" the toothy, smug grin of Raión stood alone against several scowling faces and the internal curses sent his way, some even coming from the teachers.
The headmaster sighed and waved his hand in a dismissive manner to get their attention away from teenager and back to the original subject. "Anyways. Lastly, we have the beginning of every circle, The signs of fire. Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, Aiven, Raión and Cassíe. Passion, temperament, the ability to trust one's instincts and incredible leadership. The last ones especially for you" the headmaster finished and smiled at the boy who'd seemingly been in another world. For once he felt the green eyes land upon him he was visibly startled. Aivens eyes moved quickly from person to person before finally landing, and staying, on the headmasters.
"Me?" he questioned and pointed slightly at himself with the hand he'd previously used to rest his chin in. The headmaster nodded.
"Yes, as Aries it is you who will take the lead in combined missions and tasks. Otherwise, Raión and Cassíe will lead their own groups when you need to split up" the headmaster explained and proceeded to turn off the pod.
Aiven felt a lump begin to form in his stomach and he leaned as far back in the armchair as he could, partially wishing he could just disappear for a moment. Aiven was not, nor had he ever been, capable of leading anything, and now the task was simply thrown at him. Perhaps it would've been easier if he were to lead a smaller group, but this was a group of twelve, not including him. Everything in the universe wanted him to protest, but for some reason he didn't. Why? Well, maybe he liked the idea of being in charge. Or he just didn't have anything to argue with.
"So, what you're saying is that we're some chosen protectors of Vanea or whatever, who also gets the cool upgrade of becoming one the Zodiacs? Wow, awesome" Cassíe said, boredom and sarcasm lingered in her voice perfectly.
"Ms. Akai, being a Zodiac is not some sort of game, it is the biggest responsibility there has ever been! Billions of lives are in your hands, everyone is counting on you, everyone is putting their trust and faith in you, one wrong move and everything crumbles! You've shown the potential that proves you're worthy the name of Sagittarius, wear it with honor!" Nashira said, her voice loud and powerful all the way through. Her grey, stone-cold eyes glaring at an untouched Cassíe.
Said eyes shined for a few seconds with a much warmer and welcoming tone of grey and Nashira took a deep breath. "But what would I expect from a first-year student"
"Give them a chance, Nah-shira!" Alkaid reminded her through clenched teeth and a smile, never taking his eyes of the thirteen students, now the Zodiacs.
Weide stared at the Jet black wood floor. The words Nashira said rang through his head. 'Billions of lives'. That phrase utterly terrified him. So much that all he could do in the moment was to stare at the small cracks in the floor with a blank stare. The teen next to him took notice of his drop in emotion, something the other didn't appear to pay much any attention to. Audra began twirling some of her loose hair around her finger, trying to think of something to say that would hopefully cheer him up.
"Um, y-you ok?" she asked and glanced at Weide. He blinked a few times before turning his head to Audra. As electric purple meet soft blue, a bright pink blush crept upon Audras face.
"...Never mind" she excused with a whisper and turned her head away from the purple-eyed teen. Despite the annoyingly flustered feeling growing inside her, she was still happy. Even though Weide didn't hear her question, it seemed to be enough to distract him from whatever made him, uncomfortable. And that was more than enough for her.
An incredibly loud snap caught the attention of everyone in the room and their heads turned to the headmaster who was standing in front of his desk, slightly leaning back against it. "Thank you" he smiled and continued. "As you all need to study for tomorrow, I'm going to make this short. It is out of most importance and safety, that this doesn't come out to any of the other students here in the academy. The only ones who can know about it is us here in the room and your parents, who we will personally inform" the headmaster looked at the group, seriousness being the only thing visible in his eyes.
The students nodded and his eyes softened. "Great! You're training will start this saturday. Meet-up here at midnight. You may now leave" the headmaster said. As most of the teens stood up to leave the office, Livíne raised her hand to gain the attention of at least one the teachers. A nod from Etamin showed she had his.
"Professor Tímios, I-" "Please, you may refer to us with our first names" Etamin cut her off, giving her and the others the permission to call them by name. Livíne smiled softly. "My apologies, Etamin" said male smiled in amusement. Virgos were without a doubt always polite in one way or another.
"I do not mean to question your ways, but why midnight?" she asked.
"Stellar aura is strongest during that time" Etamin answered her question simply. "Now go and study, I don't feel like failing any of you" The students all walked out, some waving goodbye, and once the door shut behind them, they all fell silent. But it was broken once again by Cassíe who huffed.
"Welp, I'm pretty sure even studying is more fun than all of you guys combined so, bye" she said and walked away, immediately pulling her pod from her jacket's pocket and activated the screen.
"Yeah she's kinda right, not that you guys are boring or anything, but studying is more important than standing around here doing nothing. I'll see you on saturday!" Adriam said and smiled wholeheartedly before walking away, Weide following shortly after him.
Audra looked after him and sighed, letting her eyes fall to the floor, and before she knew it, everyone else had gone off to either their dorms to get their stuff, any of the classrooms or outside. She was standing alone in the hallway, looking around in slight confusion. "Bye?" she said to anyone with the interest of listening before she too headed off to the library to study.
