It was night time, the Sun was long gone, and we had arrived to our destination. I was slowly waking up as I felt someone softly caressing me on my head, and when I came to my senses, I realized I had fallen asleep on Ellie's shoulder.
" Hey! You're okay? We're here. " she said, letting out a laughter.
" Oh-Uh sorry! I'm sorry... " I said as I quickly lifted up my head, apologetically gesturing my hands. She kept laughing.
" Why are you apologizing? It's okay. " she said. I sighed as I smiled at her.
I looked around, checking for the rest of the students. Some of our classmates were on their phones, others were sleeping, and a few were talking among themselves. The teachers had left the bus with the driver, and asked us to wait inside. I've seen camping centers in big open fields, with nearly no trees in sight, but this one seemed to be somewhere in the middle of the woods. All I see, are the silhouettes of the trees in the dark night, and the camping center is a big house that reminds me of a Motel I once saw in an horror movie... or maybe it was a suspense movie? Well, I was 7 years old when I watched it, and it had blood in it, dumb teenagers, and a killer... so I guess it was an horror movie...
" Hey! " Ellie called me, patting on my shoulder. " Are you awake? " she asked.
" Oh, yea. " I said as I pulled myself out of my thoughts. "
" Do you think there are any bears around here? " she asked as she was looking outside the window.
I stared at her, a little confused. " Bears? Oh no, no, thank God there are no bears around here! " I said as she turned back at me, relieved from her worries. " But there might be rabbits and hawks... probably rats too...and snakes... and lots of insects. " I said as I rubbed my chin. She didn't look so amused anymore. I could say she looked even more scared than before.
In the mean time, one of the teachers came back, clapping her hands, and calling us to leave the bus. " Come on everyone. We're good to go! Come on, let's get up! We've got a couple rooms, but they won't be enough for all of you, so some of you may sleep in the same room as your friends, classmates, whatever. There may not be enough beds for everyone, so you might as well take your sleeping bags inside. I am sure you already know this, but I will say it anyway, because, according to some people, it is my ' responsibility ' to do so. " She said as she glanced over a couple of students as we moved out of the bus. " You can only share rooms with the ones of the same gender as yours. In other words, boys will sleep with boys and girls will sleep with girls. " My teacher said.
As I left the bus, I noticed how many of my classmates had come to this trip. There was Petter, Daniel, and Ricardo, the only boys from the same class as mine. Then there was Diana, Nicole and Luna. The only girls from our class that had come. The rest of the students, were Ellie's classmates. Luke, Annie, Rachel, Lucy and Kate.
" Wouldn't it be better if we just took out everything, and that way we could sleep outside as we're supposed to? " One of the girls asked.
" No. " My teacher said. " It's getting really late. We should just get inside, and take care of it tomorrow. I'm sure everyone is tired, so you might as well take a good rest before you get to set up your tents. " She said as she walked towards the house, and stopped in front of a big wooden door, with beautiful flowers decoration. She ringed the bell, then knocked as loud as possible. A few seconds later, the door was unlocked, and we walked in.
Once we made our way inside, I looked around, delighted with the spacious halls with countless picture frames on the walls. There was a man on the balcony, and as soon as he saw us, he stood up from his seat, to then lead us the way to our rooms. We walked up some stairs that led us to the first and last floor of the building. It was a little hall with a few doors. Three or four of them were the bathrooms, and the rest of them, were the bedrooms in which we were going to spend the night.
As the teachers made their decisions, we were split in groups of threes and twos. Ellie was put in a room with Rachel and Kate, Diana was going to share a room with Luna, and Nicole was going to share a room with Lucy and Annie. I was put in a room in the middle of everyone's, with Ricardo. And the rest of the boys were shoved in the last room of the hall. We wished everyone good night, and got in our respective rooms.
Our room was not too big, neither too small. It was just good enough to share it with another person, even though it had only one bed. First thing Ricardo did, as soon as I closed the door, was turning on the TV, sticking his hands in his backpack, and pulling out a giant bag of chocolate cereals, then he started eating them as if they were popcorn. He was watching football... but not any kind of football! He was watching feminine football!! The TV was one of those good old fashioned big box TVs that are so hard to find nowadays, because everyone just loves plasma TVs, and no one really has any of these anymore... or maybe I'm the only one who hasn't seen any, in many years...
Duuuude! " Ricardo called. I had lost myself in my own thoughts again. I glanced at him as I shook my head. " You want some? " he asked.
" No. No, I'm good. " I tell him as I reach for my bags and open them, taking out my pajama, to then get dressed.
" You know they won't bring us dinner, right? " Ricardo said. " It's too late "
" Alright... " I finally gave up. " You know, I don't usually eat much at night, but I guess I can just take some of those. " I said as I took some of the cereals to my mouth.
" Man, don't you find them amazing? " he asked.
" What? Who? " I said asked as I opened my sleeping bag, then I dragged it right next to the bed, where Ricardo was laying on. I was on the ground, between him and the TV.
" Women, man! It's so cool, like... since the very beginning, women have always been limited and kept away from their capacities... repressed from their desires and ambitions...we were so immerse in our own pride, blindly fooled by what the society has taught us about how things should be, that we've got ourselves believing that women were unable to do simple things that men do, like playing football. And we never really gave them a chance to prove themselves, until they decided to rise on their own... we assumed we were the superior gender, just because we're males... what does that has to do with anything? " He looks at me. I just stare at him and shrug. I didn't taught he would expect me to answer that.
" I really like watching feminine football! It all feels so pure, and.. I don't know. Of all feminine football games I've watched, I have never seen any women faking their fall, and pretend to be badly hurt as most men would do. It all feels so genuine, like... they're giving their hearts and souls for the game... I wonder what would be the true meaning of being the ' superior gender '. I mean, I don't believe in such thing. This is like, asking someone who is the best artist in the world? Or, asking a child which one of her parents she would prefer to live with, if she had to choose... I mean, these are the worst examples I could've thought of, but you got me, right? " Ricardo said as he kept watching.
In some way, I do agree with him, even thought I've seen lot's of feminine football games with the worst and dirtiest plays you could've ever imagined. Women can be as dirty as Men... and vice-versa. But, as I glanced at him, I refused to ruin his vision of these kind of reality he lives in. He is right about the ' superior gender ' thing tho... I don't believe in such thing as well...
We could suddenly hear little steps, and little giggles from outside. Eventually, one of the girls that walked by, knocked on the door and ran away. A few minutes later, they came back and knocked again. Ricardo stood up to go answer it, and he opened the door to three boys that decided to bring their sleeping bags with them, and invade our room. They brought snacks, we started talking about video games, sports, hobbies, we played cards, opened some snacks, etc, etc... all that kind of things that teenagers like to do as a group. After some time, more people had knocked on the door again, and all the girls invaded our room as well. This all turned into a slumber party really quick. Diana spilled her snacks all over Ricardo's bed, there were drinks, games, and movies... we stayed up until late. With all the chit-chats and inevitable weight of fatigue that has been implanted on my pure, and yet young and immature adolescence, I eventually fell asleep on my bed.
