When Saturday finally came around, Morgan and her mother drove up into the circus' parking lot.
"Here we are," said Ingrid.
Morgan peeked out the window. Though Alma had assured them that what had happened yesterday was a freak incident, she couldn't help be more than a little wary.
"If you don't like it, we can leave whenever you want," said Ingrid.
Letting out a sigh, Morgan unbuckled her seatbelt and got out of the car. "I need to stop setting stuff on fire."
Ingrid stepped out of the car as well. She nearly flew out of her high heels when Mimo popped out of nowhere to greet them
"Mom, chill, it's just the mime," said Morgan.
Mimo put on an annoyed expression as if he to say 'I have a name.' He turned to Ingrid, giving her an apologetic look on his face.
"It's fine. I just wasn't expecting you," said Ingrid.
"Is Rico here?" asked Morgan.
Mimo nodded and pointed in the direction of the trailers.
"Thanks. Guess we'll see you around," said Morgan before heading off with Ingrid.
They soon arrived at Rico's trailer and knocked on the door. They could hear someone stumbling around before Rico answered. His left arm was in a sling while his right foot wore a medical walking boot.
"Oh hey, you actually came," he said.
"You said Saturday," said Morgan with a shrug.
"Right, right. Well, we should start with the lesson then," said Rico. "Did you come to watch Mrs..?"
"Fey. And, I suppose so."
"Okay," said Rico before saying under his breath. "No pressure."
He limped down from the trailer to an open spot. "What did you want to learn first?"
Morgan shrugged again. "I don't know."
Rico ran a hand through his hair. Already he had his work cut out for him.
By now, a small group of circus performers had gathered around to watch. Morgan frowned. She wasn't exactly expecting an audience. Rico noticed her expression.
"Don't you guys have work to do?" He asked.
"And miss a master at work?" Chuckled a clown.
"Yeah, not often we see a great and powerful wizard pass on their teachings," snickered a strongwoman.
"Chismosa Delphina," Rico muttered. "Come on guys, students only."
Despite their many protests, he eventually shooed them all away. Though it would not have surprised him if they were watching from behind a corner.
"Okay, let's start again..." he started to say.
"Rico!" Cried out his aunt's voice.
Rico sighed and turned to greet Alma and Flor.
"Hey! Morgan," Said Flor waving at the others.
"Hey!” said Morgan.
"What are you guys doing here?" asked Rico.
"Just wanted to see how you were healing," said Alma. "But I'll leave your lesson. In the meantime, I'm going to make some tea. Would you like to join me, Ingrid?"
Ingrid hesitated for a moment.
"I'll be right out here," said Morgan.
"... Sure, why not?" said Ingrid before following Alma into the trailer.
"You're not going to join them?" Rico asked Flor.
Flor sat down on the first step of the trailer. "Nope. I think I'm going to stay and watch."
"Of course," said Rico.
"So, what's our first lesson, Teach?" asked Morgan.
Rico pursed his lips. He hadn't given much thought to the lesson. If anything he had hoped that Morgan wasn't going to show up at all. But here she was.
"What can you already do?" he asked.
"Levitation and setting things on fire," said Morgan.
"She's really good at that last thing," said Flor.
"What about the levitating?" asked Rico.
"Not so much," Morgan admitted.
Rico pointed his good hand at a stool that had been left behind. It slowly rose into the air before floating towards them. With a flick of his wrist, it plopped down in front of Morgan. He then snapped. A stone flew up into the air and landed right onto the center of the stool.
"Let's start with something simple. Levitate this stone," he said.
Morgan stared for at the rock. A minute passed by, the rock still sitting motionless on the stool.
Rico glanced down on his watch. "Having trouble?"
"I've never done it on purpose before," said Morgan.
"Just try to focus on the stone."
Morgan tried again, concentrating harder on the stone. A second later, and she got it to shake.
"It's a start," said Rico.
"Then show me how to do it," said Morgan.
"It's easy, just levitate it."
"Very descriptive," said Flor.
"Hey, who's the teacher here?"
Rico scratched his head, visibly becoming frustrated. "Put all your concentration on the rock. Picture it floating."
"If you say so."
Morgan put all her focus on the rock. She closed her eyes, trying to imagine it floating.
The rock moved by the fraction of a centimeter. Followed by a bounce and then... shoot up about a hundred feet into the air.
Flor squeaked. She covered her head with her arms, waiting for the stone to come hurtling back to Earth.
"Maaaybe too much concentration," said Rico staring up at the sky.
Morgan groaned and plopped onto the stool. "This is going nowhere."
Rico held out his hand. The rock came back down. It froze in mid-air, just short of bonking Morgan on the head. Rico levitated it to him and circled it in the air.
"It just takes a little practice," he said. "Here, catch."
Ricco tossed the stone Morgan's way. It made it halfway, dropping at Morgan's feet.
"Or maybe I'm not good at this teaching thing," sighed Rico.
"How did you learn?" asked Morgan.
"A lot of trial and error. I'm completely self-taught," said Rico as he took a seat on the ground.
"What about your aunt? Didn't she help??" Asked Morgan.
"She tried, but we use magic differently. It'd be like a fish trying to teach a frog how to swim."
Flor frowned thinking back to their childhood. For a moment she was back to hiding in the hallway, listening to her father's loud booming voice followed by her mother's quieter yet shaky one.
She must have dozed off because for a second Flor found herself on a balcony.
"It's never going to change..."
"What about your mentor?" Asked Morgan.
Flor snapped back to reality, nearly falling off the trailer step.
"Can only make illusions," said Rico. "But she did teach me how to put on an entertaining and memorable performance."
He jumped to his feet and struck a pose as fireworks exploded behind him.
Flor shook her head. "If only she knew how to tone down that ego."
Morgan chuckled. A thought suddenly crossed her mind.
"Is, there a way to get rid of your powers?" She asked.
Flor and Rico both gave her surprised expressions.
"Why would you want to do that?" asked Flor.
"I don't know... forget it," said Morgan.
Rico picked up the stone and held it in front of Morgan.
"How about we try again?" he said. "This time, try holding out your hands."
Morgan gave him a skeptical look. She shrugged and held her hands over the stone.
"Okay, now feel all that magic inside of you. Let it flow and tap into its power," said Rico.
The stone began vibrating. It floated a half inch into the air.
"There we go! You're doing it!" said Flor.
The rock shot forward, hitting Rico square in the stomach. He grunted, dropping to his knees.
"Oh my god, are you okay?" asked Morgan.
Rico huffed and wheeze. "I think... now's a good time for a break."
