I felt kind of wrong for telling Janet about Dylan's secret, but felt appropriate to let her know what Alice is about to get herself into. I wondered if Janet was going to tell her. I texted her about it, but Janet didn't respond. I sat up from my bed to grab Dylan's number from my backpack. I'm surprised I never had it in the first place since we spoke together so much. It was almost midnight and I'd assume they'd be fast asleep or something.
Soon as I was about to get up, my mother walked in to tell me something. She had just come home form the diner. She works there all day. They don't force her to. My mom enjoys making food for others. She goes out of her way to use her cooking skills to feed some of the homeless people around town. Lisa Calin, now Lisa Wilhelm married my father, Adam Wilhelm, when I was born. I'd always used to tease them that because of me, I was the reason why they married and not because of true love.
I'm surprised I'm an only child. I'd think that at this point, they'd have at least two other kids. But no. I'm their only one. You'd be surprised that I wasn't spoiled. My mother and father think that just because I was an only child didn't mean I had to have everything.
My mother came into my room in silence. At first I was worried because once she sat down and said those words, "We need to talk Henry." I flinched when she said that.
"Okay...I'm not like...in trouble or anything?" I asked.
"Oh...No. You're a good kid...I hope. This is serious, but nobody is in trouble."
I looked at her strangely. Trying to come up with whatever possibility she could tell me. That was when she reached into her pocket and pulled out a picture. It was an ultrasound photo. My eyes widen and my mother smiled.
"You...you're pregnant?!?" I shouted, "Ew....wait. You're pregnant. I don't to think about..that"
"It's..how we made you Henry. Adults do that kind of stuff. Anyways, ssssh. Your father doesn't know. I'm going to tell him tomorrow morning. Going to make a special breakfast for him."
"This is amazing mom. I'm going to be an older brother!" I was so excited. Don't know why it took them 17 years, but I was so excited. I gave her a hug and glanced at the photo one more time. It was tiny, but you can see it's head.
"Henry..there's also one more thing. And you're not in trouble." Oh...I see what she did. Giving me the good stuff to let me down right after. I sat down and waited for her to say something.
She brought up my grades again. I swore to her that I was fine and that this year was just a mess for me. I told her that Senior year will be different. I got my chin up and ready to actually pass my classes. "I know that sweetie, Your father and I aren't going to pressure you. As long as you're passing and go to college. That's all we care about. We don't want you to end up like us."
"But I like where you guys ended up. Yeah, you don't have high-tiered jobs, but it's enough."
"Henry...this house was bought with the help of your father's sister. If we didn't have her, we wouldn't be living he--" She stopped in her tracks, "Wh..who's phone number is that?" She saw the note on my bed. Who's Dylan?
"Oh....uh. He's the guy, who spent the night at my house way back. You remember right?"
"Yes...of course. Weird how he wanted to spend the night. You...two aren't...together right?"
"Oh..god..no. I'm...I'm not."
"I didn't say you were, but Henry..if you ever did come out. Just know that you have very supportive parents." She took the ultrasound photo and headed out my room. Questioning me about...everything.
"Mom, I'm not gay in any way. If I was a bit, I'd at least be bisexual. Now goodnight mother." I pushed her out my her and closed it. I even locked it just in case she tries to come back in. I stood against the door and let out a big exhale. I hate/love my parents. I'm still processing that I'm going to have a sister or brother. If I had the choice, I'd hope I have a sister.
I threw myself onto my bed and I'm glad Dylan's phone number was there for her to notice. I did not want to continue talking about my grades. I took my phone off the charger and immediately typed Dylan's number into my contacts. I didn't think about it at first, but I found myself messaging him. Hey!
Now that I have his number...why not? I didn't expect a response since it was so late, but it was a Friday, so who knows. But of course, I did get a message, but it was from Janet and....Alice. Oh shit.
Yo dumb ass, I know you see this, I answered Janet first.
Watch..you're profanity Janet.
I can say...whatever I want. Look we need to talk
huh...you're the second person to say that.
who was the first?
My mother...don't worry. I'll tell you tomorrow at Denny's
Speaking...of dennys, I'm not going to tell Alice. Is that fucked up? I kinda want to see her expression on her face when she finds out
It kind of is, but you can't tell anyone about Dylan's secret. He can't know that you know. It's not open to everyone just yet
You have my word Henry, anyways I'm going to bed. We meet at 6...remember?
Got it..see you then
Well that went...well...well. I don't know how I feel about Janet not telling Alice. It'd be best that Dylan's secret doesn't get out as much, but maybe it would be best if Alice knew. I don't know. I swipe my phone over to the next message from Alice and it all says is:
I am so excited! Thanks for agreeing this. We're gonna have so much fun!
Oh yea. Definitely!
She didn't respond back, but she saw the message. I sat in my bed for awhile. Waiting for Dylan to message back. It was almost 1 am. I didn't stay up because I was waiting for him to text back, but I stayed up because what's sleep? Awhile I waited, I read some comic books I found. One that I picked up was Dylan's X-Men comic he showed me that night. I found it odd that he gave it to me and entrusted me to read it and not fuck up the book itself.
I guess, it's a good thing though. I love Leo an all, but it's nice to have another friend like Dylan. Reading through the comic, I have somewhat of an understanding in what he was going through. Coincidentally, reading his comic, I received a text message from him.
Who..in the heck...is texting me this late?
.....Heck?
Who..is this?
The ghost of future past. We do texting now! No, really it's Henry
LOL....you're funny -_- Why this late?
So...tomorrow. I'll be there at Denny's
Alice..asked you too? Dude, I think she has a crush on me or something. I smell something fishy going on.
Well..you're not wrong, but don't say anything. Please...from Janet and Alice's sake. Don't say anything. When it comes to it...tell her you're not interested.
What am I supposed to say? Oh hey Alice, we can't be a thing because I'm gay!
Something like that Dylan. Plus...I kind of told Janet you were.
WHAT?!
I am so sorry, but when Janet told me Alice liked you. I had to tell her.
Fine...it's...fine. They're friends, so maybe I should tell them.
well, I'm still sorry for telling her. You probably should've been the one.
No it's cool. You're just...looking out for me. What are friends for ;)
Okay...good night Dylan. Go back to sleep!
Alright, you too Henry. See you tomorrow dude. Hope things go well.
Later broski
I shut my phone off and covered myself in my blankets. I saw my alarm clock flick to 2. I closed my eyes and tried my hardest to fall asleep.
