-Back In Present Day-
*Kylar's POV*
“Mommy, why did he do that?!” A child starred at the painting, shocked at the sad story behind it. Glancing up at it, my heart ached that someone would even put this out to the world, whether it was angel or mortal. The mother seemed aghast at the child's question, not sure how to answer it. Walking up, I crouched next to the child.
“You want to know the truth behind the story? They don’t tell you everything here.” The child looked at me and then back at the painting for a minute, before glancing back at me and nodding wide-eyed. We both sat down on the bench, while the mom watched us close by. “I’ll start from the beginning since some of what he told is true, but some is missing… this way you’ll get the full story.” the Kid happily nodded, eager to hear everything I had to say.
“Angels that are assigned to protect humans are called ‘Guardian angels’, and this angel was the guardian angel of the woman in the painting. While protecting her, he fell in love with her. At first, he held himself back, afraid their differences would be too much for her. But one day, she approached him and asked him out to get a bite to eat together, and he found himself agreeing, regardless. Their relationship and love proliferated, and Heaven didn’t like this. They were jealous that such love was possible between two completely different people.” I could tell the little boy was intrigued by the story so far. The memories for me though were almost unbearable. However, if my life was to be displayed publicly, I wanted the truth to be known. “Heaven ordered that the two separate at once, but the two didn’t listen, causing a war to break out in Heaven. Angels were mad at Heaven for claiming to love all, but not accepting such a beautiful love. In the middle of this war, even the guardian angel who fell in love with the mortal woman had to fight. What he hadn’t realized though, was that the woman was watching over him. Another angel was going to attack her, and she knew it. Her guardian angel went to protect her, but she knew he would do that too. Instead, when the Angel went to stab the other one, the woman jumped in front of his sword, not wanting him to hurt one of his own.” My heart was racing, and my breathing slowed with the memory. She didn’t deserve that, and yet she wouldn’t let me protect her like I was supposed to.
“So then what happened?! Did she live!?” The child moved forward in his seat, desperate to know the rest. Glancing up at the painting of the angel above the dead woman’s body, I closed my eyes, the painful memories flashing on the back of my lids.
“Fall!!” I dashed towards her. An angel with a sword in hand, ready to end Fall’s life, along with this war. My heart wouldn’t stop racing. I was her guardian, her protector; I couldn’t let this happen. I promised her that I would always be here.
Finally reaching her, I placed her behind me, just as the angel sprinted forward with his sword. My sword was drawn, ready to fight. When the angel was about to reach me, my sword placed ever so precise to pierce his heart… just as I pushed my sword forward with all the force I could muster up, a shadowy figure jumped between us. Fall’s shoulders arched back, pain writhing on her face, as she whispered those words to me ‘I love you’ and I watched as her body fell backward, going completely limp.
“NO!!” The scream scraped my throat as if I had swallowed a razor blade. I fell to my knees beside her now lifeless body. The angel from before, attacked by another. The war raged on around us as if nothing had happened, but it was all muffled to me as I held her in my arms sobbing.
“Please...Fall..don’t ..don’t leave me...I was supposed to protect you..why..why would you do this…?” Tears fell from my face onto hers. Her arms fell to the side as I pulled her face up to mine and rested it on my shoulder sobbing harder and harder. Rage. It was all I could feel in this moment.
Setting her body down on the ground gently, I stood protectively over her, picking my sword back up. My heart was aching, and it was difficult to breathe. Just as I was about to run forward and slaughter them all, a bright light shined above Fall’s body. It was my light. Each angel had a unique shine to their life. Glancing downwards I noticed the light was absorbing into her body. That’s right. Angel’s could return life to someone if true love for them is present. It was only ever done between angels, but it was doable with humans.
Placing my hand on her head, I raced through her memories before her soul was returned, and erased all the ones of us. If I was going to have a second chance, I would make sure I did it right this time. I’ll protect you until the end; I won’t let you sacrifice yourself again.
Haven wouldn’t let me live after this, as returning the life of someone was forbidden, but I didn’t care. This was their doing, and I would play by their rules no longer. Picking Fall up I glanced over the war and my eyes linked with a familiar pair. She glanced at Fall and then back up at me before nodding sadly as I left the war zone as quickly as I could.
“She lived. She and the angel are happy together now. Though they must always hide from Heaven, they know that wherever they are, they’ll be happy, so long as they are together.” The little boy smiled and ran to his mom, and they walked away. Sighing, I glanced up at the painting. Whoever did this was definitely at the war….but why paint such a sad story. None of the rogue angels would’ve done it, they’re all in hiding. So what angel would have painted such a message?
