With a sudden movement, I wiped the tears, which were already beginning to wet the covers of my mouth. The first floor was empty, as I expected, however, on the left side I heard a lot of noise, so I assumed it should be the emergency part. It could be a possible exit without so much vigilance.
I looked at both sides of the hall. Nothing. I had to look for some sign, and hope that they were in English. I supposed they must be, if what came mainly to the hospital were tourists. However, until I saw no sign, I was completely lost. I sniffed the air, looking for the fragrance of the old paper. I also sharpened my ear, searching for the sound of archivists. However, I could smell and hear everything, except what I was looking for. The nearest thing was a series of drugs, which smelled different from each other. If I concentrated enough, I could know what the tablets smelled, and what was the aroma of the injectables. The syrups had a sweet fragrance, which, to my taste, seemed too cloying. I could also recognize the smell of the lawn, which, if I wasn’t mistaken, was a hallway ahead of me, in what must surely be the "Relaxation Zone" or something like that. Behind the garden, I got the essence of coffee and donuts, and, again, I got distracted thinking if I could eat something of it, something human. The scent was not bad, so I assumed so. On the other hand, I was listening, also to my right, something with wheels, which I wasn’t sure were stretchers. They looked more like storage carts.
- Tsk! - I was totally lost, and my nose was useless, because that floor had too many smells together. - I guess I just have to ask someone in the emergency room. There, I will not be so out of place.
I let my ear guide me to the emergency room, where everything was in chaos. I recognized some faces I had seen at the festival, which made me frown. It seemed that one of the buses that took to the town had overturned and there were many people with contusions, twisted ankles, and one that another one with fractures. Incredible, I already had an excuse to disappear (I wanted to cry again). And, more importantly, it was obvious that something like this must have happened, otherwise, how someone had found Caroline's body and mine so quickly. It was impossible. I denied, now I could be stronger, faster, and with improved senses, but I was still being a distracted stupid, however, there was something that remained unsettled. If the accident had taken place on the road, how had they found us, if we were inside the forest?
- Can I help you? - I bounced reflexively at the touch of a doctor on my shoulder. Yes, a stupid distracted.
The guy was a bit taller than me, handsome, with his hair brushed back with gel, with slightly more tanned skin than the others, evidencing his origin from another place, and had green eyes that took me again to distract me, trying to count the colors that his iris contained.
- Yes - I said, still looking at him fixedly, to which he averted his eyes and cleared his throat, uncomfortable, returning me to reality at once. I denied myself too. - I would like to know where the file is, I need-
- Turn right on that corner - pointed to his back. - But I warn you, it’s closed - he said suddenly, and I could hear behind me, him being called. Jonathan was his name. - Sorry.
I saw him run to his comrade, and then I saw them both go to a nearby stretcher that smelled of blood. For a moment, I imagined that the one who rested on that stretcher was Caroline, who was alive, barely, but with hope of living. I sighed. No, I had seen Caroline die. There was no way that such a brutal blow wouldn’t have killed her. I walked, abandoning my fantasy, to the corner that the handsome man had indicated to me, sniffing the air, this time unmistakably catching the aroma of the cloistered paper.
The office was to the right of the corridor, which said in both languages "File of medical records", written on a blue plate, attached to the side of the door. It had a large window, in which I could see a desk, on which a fat man was sleeping, with a dressing gown that evidently wasn’t of his size, because the buttons hardly did their work, stretched and ready to fly through the air. Behind it, I could see at least five huge shelves, with a lot of folders squeezed together. I winced in pain. How was I supposed to find my file among hundreds of them? Fortunately, the discomfort didn’t last long. Above each bookshelf said what part were the files: Emergency, pediatrics, nuclear medicine, internal medicine, etc. I couldn’t see the morgue section anywhere. Maybe those files were inside the morgue itself, so I would have to go down again. I complained loudly. I didn’t want to do it, and for a moment I thought it would be easier just to leave, to let the file that said I had died stay there, so that my family would know that I had died... And that my body had been stolen later.
With that thought, I turned the knob and went in, trying to make as little noise as possible so as not to wake up the man, who was already snoring deeply. I looked at the shelves and a red flash caught my attention. Behind all of them, a camera looked back at me. Well, they wouldn’t recognize me, however, I had to hurry up, someone should be monitoring the security of the hospital, and if he saw me there, he would send security, or radio call the fat caretaker. However, after a few minutes searching, I still couldn’t find the right bookshelf. I cursed inside and turned to the door again, determined to search the morgue, although this would be an extra risk. However, as I passed by the desk, I looked directly into my face in one of the files that the man had, wide open on the desk, and to those who hadn’t paid more attention when entering.
There I was, in the morgue plant, still in the bag. I took the folder and brought it up to my chest, reading exactly what it said. First, I looked horrible. No one could say that I was that girl now. My eyes were semi-open, completely lost in nothing, without any shine. Blood ran down my nose, and all my mouth, throat and chest were full of dried blood. In my neck, I could see now the brutal bite that the pale man had given me hours before. I could see the torn muscle and even the bone beneath it. It really was a massive bite. Now I understood why the woman had gone mad when she saw me walking. The reason for my death? Animal attack, although it wasn’t specified which one. They hadn’t done the autopsy before, because they didn’t have my family's permission, that led me to ask if they had spoken with someone, but I sincerely hoped that they didn’t. With an expression of sadness, I closed the file and a gasp surprised me, again.
The man looked at me surprised, although increasingly angry.
- You can’t be here, return that! - He shouted at me, standing up laboriously, opportunity that I took advantage of to embrace my file, open the door and leave hurriedly, doubting about leaving for emergencies, or not.
To my bad luck, I heard another scream to my left. A security man saw me, starting to run towards me. He was a man of color, very tall and very well built. I was sure he couldn’t hurt me, but it would be harder to get rid of.
- Fuck! - I exclaimed, holding my folder better and running in the opposite direction, moving away from the nearest entrance and interning again at the hospital. I tried not to run so fast, so as not to show my supernaturality anymore. I turned the corridor to the right, behind the file and then stopped suddenly. The woman who had seen me before, the one who had to check my body was there, along with her friend, the suspicious.
- It's her! - She began to scream. - I swear to God it's her!
The other woman stared at me and I recognized a small smile on her face, barely perceptible. She knew what I was, for sure, or, at least, in my opinion she knew.
- Stop her, she stole a file - I heard back.
- Double fuck - I said in a low tone and a grimace of annoyance.
