Nathan sat at his dining room table on the phone with the man from the crime scene. "I know. That's the worst crime scene we've seen here in Eugene in the last, well, three years?" the man said. Nathan sighed, staying silent for a moment, before his eyes opened a little wider. "That woman at the shop said something about the attacker 'saving them'. Do you think that'd have anything to do with the shooting? Wasn't last month's knife attacker also yelling about that, Chris?" he questioned. Chris responded rather slowly. "I...I think so, yeah. Maybe there's some sort of cult?" he replied. "Cult? Don't be crazy." Nathan snapped back. "You never know, Nathan. 'World gets crazier every day." Chris responded, before hanging up. Nathan exhaled, putting his phone away. "I wish people'd stop hanging up on me." he grumbled.
Nathan opened his cabinet and grabbed a mug, before pouring cold coffee into it from the day before. He sat the coffee pot down, opening the microwave and placing the mug inside. He turned the microwave on and waited. Shortly before the microwave finished, Nathan opened his fridge and grabbed some coffee creamer. The microwave beeped a few times before Nathan opened it, and grabbed the coffee. He closed the microwave, popping the lid to the creamer open and adding just a little to the coffee. He closed the creamer, putting it back in the fridge, and then he grabbed his sugar dish.
He quickly scooped out two teaspoons of sugar into the coffee, before putting the sugar dish back and grabbing a spoon from his silverware drawer. He began to stir it all together inside of the mug. Just a minute later and the coffee was made. He tossed the spoon into his sink and took his coffee to the living room, turning on the television.
The local news channel was reporting on the coffee shop attack, which had happened only yesterday.
"Our sources report that the attacker, whose identity has not been revealed yet, killed six and injured four at approximately two in the afternoon yesterday." the news anchor spoke. Nathan nodded his head back and forth, sinking down into his coffee mug.
The doors to the Police Department opened, Nathan stepping inside and scanning the room. "Hey, Nate! Chris needs to see you. He's at his desk." a stranger spoke, catching him by surprise. The stranger hurried away as Nathan made his way to the back of the building. He soon found his way to Chris' desk, and was greeted by a troubled look. "Hey, Nate. Take a seat." Chris said, as Nathan walked towards him. Nathan sat down and looked around, before locking eyes with Chris. "What's the matter, Chris?" Nathan inquired. Chris sighed, shaking his head. "There's been another attack. Two dead at the Hilton hotel. It was late at night and they were jumped. Security cameras caught it but the attacker was masked." he answered. Nathan stayed silent for a few moments, having trouble processing things. "Why are so many attacks happening so close together all of the sudden?" Nathan asked. Chris looked at him, before glancing to the side. "I don't know, man, but...They can't go on like this." he replied.
Nathan slowly got up, as Chris shot up and took his attention for a moment. "Hey, before you go, check in with Chadwick. He might know something." he said, before sitting back down.
Pacing through the different desks, Nathan's eyes drifted to Chadwick's, but he wasn't present. Nathan stopped for a moment, glancing up and around the room, before turning his head back up and continuing outside.
Nathan made it out of the building, shortly before his phone rang. When he answered, Chadwick's voice was on the other side. "Get to Fern Ridge Lake, NOW. I'm following an armed suspect but I don't know how much longer I can keep up." he said, before abruptly hanging up. Nathan put his phone away, looking down at the ground as if to think, for a moment, before dashing to his car.
