Nathan's cruiser pulled into the driveway of the Bird family's house. Gavin looked to him from the passenger seat. "Really think we're gonna find anything here?" he asked, sleepily. It was eight in the morning, and the two were questioning a few people that were present during some of the crimes.
"Greg Bird. He was one of the injured at the coffee shop attack. I didn't get a chance to question him, so we have to do it now. He definitely knows something." Nathan responded. Gavin groaned. "Alright, then. Let's go." he said in an annoyed tone.
Nathan got out of the car, turning it off. Gavin lately followed him. They approached the door of the house, as Nathan reached for the doorbell. To their surprise, the door opened before they even rang. On the other side stood a young woman, Greg's wife, Nancy. "Hello, ma'am. We're from the Eugene Police Department. We're here to see Greg Bird." Nathan spoke, patiently. Nancy looked at him with a less than cheerful look. "I'm sorry to say, but...Greg passed away yesterday. You won't be able to speak to him." she muttered. Gavin looked at her with an apologetic look. Nathan sighed, looking at her. "I'm sorry for your loss...We still need to know what happened. did he tell you anything when he came back home? Anything about the attacker?" he asked, in a calm and collected manner. She looked between the two, then shifted her eyes to the right. "One moment, please." she said, before closing the door and walking into her living room.
Gavin glanced to Nathan with a suspicious look. "This doesn't sound right. You said he was only injured..." he thoughtfully whispered. Nathan nodded, "Just wait." he said. The door opened again and Nancy was holding an envelope. "He said to give this to the police if he died." she spoke. Nathan and Gavin both looked confused, but Nathan took the envelope anyway. "Got a knife?" Nathan asked. Gavin pulled out a pocket knife and handed it to Nathan. Slitting the paper open, Nathan handed the knife back to Gavin. He opened the envelope and pulled out a small sheet of paper. "Hold on..." Nathan said, confused. Gavin raised an eyebrow, as did Nancy. "These are coordinates." he mumbled. Gavin peered over Nathan's shoulder at the paper. "To where?" he asked. Nancy and Nathan looked at each other for a moment. "Fern Ridge Lake." he replied.
Walking back to Nathan's car, Gavin was asking a lot of questions. "Why did you act so worried about it? What's wrong with Fern Ridge Lake? Is there something I need to know about?" he nagged. Nathan grunted, looking back to Gavin. "I will explain everything when we get there. The best thing you can do right now is shut up." he said, clearly very irritated. Gavin shot his hands up. "Alright, man. I'll be quiet. You're such an old man." he mumbled to himself. Nathan stopped for a second, and glared at him, before getting back into his car.
Arriving at the lake, Nathan parked in the same area as before. They both got out of the car. "What now?" Gavin asked. "Shut up, follow me." Nathan quickly replied. They walked into the forest, stepping over fallen branches and the occasional large rock. "Where are we going?" Gavin asked again. Nathan looked back to him, his head feeling light once more. "Where the coordinates lead to." he responded.
Shortly after their talk, a faint glow became visible. It grew as they got closer to the coordinates. Nathan began to feel very lightheaded. A few moments later, and they were there. Gavin and Nathan stood before the boulder. "What...is that?" Gavin asked in amazement. Nathan stayed silently as they walked closer. "Why would he send us here?" Nathan wondered aloud. Gavin looked around to see if anybody else was present, but there was nobody.
"I want to see something, touch the stone." Nathan told Gavin. Gavin looked at him like he was insane. "Why?" he asked. "Just do it." Nathan reinforced. Gavin sighed, walking forward. He slowly reached his hand out for the boulder. The moment he made contact with the boulder...Nothing happened. "So? Do you feel anything?" Nathan asked. Gavin looked to his side, slowly nodding. "No...Nothing." he said, in a strange, more quiet voice. Nathan was suspicious, but played along with Gavin. "Alright. Let's go..." he said. They both walked away from the stone. While they walked, a hooded man peeked from around the trees behind the boulder. He silently glared at Gavin as he walked away from the forest.
