Philip walked down the sidewalk outside of his house, glancing across the street. There was something strange going on. No cars, or even any people were seen. He came to the edge of the road and locked eyes with an unfamiliar face. Gavin Lane approached him, looking lost.
Nathan walked outside of his house, looking around. A terrible feeling came over him as he looked around the city. There was nobody in sight. He continued down the sidewalk, crossing the road. He couldn't remember where he was before he left his house. He started to worry, and headed for Philip's house.
A lone, teenage girl woke up on the streets of Eugene. She slowly rose up to her knees, unsure of where she was. She thought for a moment, before standing up completely. Beginning to walk, she picked up her pace and headed forward on the sidewalk.
Nathan crossed the road again, and made it to Philip's house. When he opened the door, nobody was home. He walked back outside after a few moments, and looked to the right, spotting a yellow envelope. When he walked over to the envelope, he felt a bit lightheaded. He picked up the envelope, opening it.
"Hey! Who are you?" Philip questioned Gavin. Gavin looked at him, not responding for a few moments, before stuttering out a response. "Oh, uh, I'm Gavin...You're the only person I've seen, what's going on?" he asked. Philip was about to respond, before he saw Nathan, a few blocks away from them, inspecting an envelope. Gavin turned around, pointing at him. "H-hey! That's Nathan! He's my partner!" he happily shouted. Philip looked very confused, walking past Gavin to reach Nathan.
The teenager looked around as she walked, before spotting an envelope on the ground. When she leaned down to open it, she began to feel lightheaded. Continuing to grab it, she rose back up to her feet. She opened the envelope, pulling out a sheet of paper, with very few words written on it. It read "Fern Ridge Lake, in the heart of the forest." in the middle of the paper.
Gavin quickly followed Philip. Nathan pulled out a sheet of paper, which had very few words written on it as well. It read "Return to the heart of the forest." in the middle of the paper. Nathan dropped the paper, realizing what that meant. He dashed off down the road. Philip and Gavin were confused, and swiftly followed behind.
Almost thirty minutes later, the teenager had reached the lake. She looked to her left and saw the forest. Thinking to herself for just a moment, she ran towards it.
Nathan walked into the middle of the forest, towards the area he remembered the boulder being. Gavin and Philip caught up with him. "Hey, Nate!" Philip shouted from behind him. Nathan glanced back, hearing that familiar voice. "Phil?" he curiously turned around.
"Gavin." Nathan muttered, less than happily. After the three caught up with each other, they heard a loud ring, causing them to shield their ears with their hands. "We should get going." Nathan said, jogging off to the location of the boulder. Philip and Gavin followed closely behind him.
The girl arrived at the heart of the forest, and became lightheaded. There was a large boulder with markings all over it, emitting a strange, low humming noise. Gavin, Philip, and Nathan reached the boulder as well, spotting the girl. Nathan's eyes widened in horror. "You..." he started to stutter. She looked at him in confusion. "Who are you? What's wrong?" she asked, worried. His expression turned grim. "I watched you die..." he whispered.
