After the lesson, Flor and Morgan decided to venture around the circus grounds.
"I feel like I should apologize for my brother. He's not exactly the teacher type," said Flor.
"If anyone should be apologizing it should be me. I'm not really that great of a student," sighed Morgan.
"Everyone has trouble with their powers at first."
Morgan stopped to watch a knife-thrower levitate some knives into the air. He rotated them to face the same direction. With a flick of his wrist, he plunged them all into a target.
"What was it like for you?" Morgan asked.
"Stressful," sighed Flor. "I would randomly sprout plants just by sitting on the grass. Which wouldn't have been so bad if they were just flowers and not also thorny bushes. And then... I started hearing things."
"Like dead people?"
Flor nodded. "Used to freak me out. They always talk in whispers. Some nights I couldn't even sleep because they would get so loud. My parents once walked in on me tearing apart my pillows."
"That bad?" said Morgan. "What happened after that?"
"They called my aunt who took me to see a special doctor to see if I had a sixth sense or was just loco," Flor explained. "When he confirmed I was hearing ghosts, Tia Alma basically took me under her wing. She taught me how to control my powers better and how to use new ones."
"Looks like it paid off judging by what happened the other day."
"Oh yes, I'm sure I was very impressive as a tiny mouse."
A firebreather joined in. He took a deep breath and exhaled out a ten-foot flame into the sky. Mostly to show off to the female performers who had been watching the knife thrower.
"Does everyone here have powers?" asked Morgan.
"Not everyone, but a lot do. Most came here for sanctuary. Others wanted to find people like them," said Flor. "I think the latter is why Rico joined. Even if it really made our parents upset. They still blame my aunt to this day."
"Your aunt? Did she work here?"
"No, she's a school nurse. But she's really great friends with the people here."
At this point, the knife thrower was circling blades around himself in a sharp tornado of death while the firebreather created firey images from his breath.
"She has some very interesting friends," noted Morgan. "I don't suppose there's another witch around here that can teach me. No offense to your brother, but he doesn't seem to like this arrangement either."
"Sorry, but he's like the only one we know who can perform spells... who'd be willing to teach anyway," said Flor.
"Are they that rare?"
Flor shrugged. "You’re the first one I’ve ever met. But hey, don't worry about it. You'll get a handle on your powers in no time."
The strongwoman came by, her arms crossed. She picked up both of the men by their shirts, chastising them for not working.
"Sure hope so," said Morgan.
