Split Second

Heart of the Forest - Part 2

Heart of the Forest - Part 2

Aug 04, 2018

Nathan stumbled back upon seeing the teenager he failed to prevent from dying. "How are you here?" he questioned. The girl looked at him, before glancing to the stone. "I don't know. I woke up and...I found something that led me here." she replied, stuttering. "No, this is impossible, I watched you die!" he shouted once more. The girl became disturbed. "Guys..." Gavin whispered, quite inaudibly. Philip stared at Nathan as he ranted. "I'm not dead!" she shouted back. Nathan looked around, highly confused. "Nathan...I..." Gavin whispered again. Philip put his hand on Nathan's shoulder. "Nate, STOP." he insisted. Nathan shoved him off, backing away from the group.

"There's no way this is real, none of it makes sense. The dead are alive and we're the only people in the city! I swear-" Nathan stopped as he shot his head over to the right. Gavin held his hands to his head, a horrible headache coming into feeling. He fell to the ground, as Philip reached out for him. Nathan slid over to him, trying to lift him up. "What's happening to him!?" Philip panicked. The girl looked around, her anxiety rising. A terrible ringing noises filled Gavin's head along with the shouts of his friends.

Suddenly, all was silent. Gavin slowly took his hands from his head, opening his eyes. Upon looking to his left, he saw Nathan beside him, on his knees. He looked to his right and saw Philip, crouched over with a hand on his back. Neither were moving. Gavin slowly stood up, the world around him seeming to have a strange, back and forth "stutter" to it. He walked forward, stopping to look at the girl, who had her hands over her mouth in panic. Looking to the stone, Gavin became confused. It was the only thing moving; Vibrating, in fact. It was vibrating very fast. Gavin walked past the stone, to the edge of the forest, looking at the lake. It too, was still. Suddenly, his headache came back, and he fell to the ground again. "I don't-" Philip shouted, before his eyes widened and he looked to the right, to spot Gavin, several feet away from them. "What is going on..." Nathan mumbled to himself.

Suddenly, Nathan opened his eyes in a hospital bed. It was as if he had instantly moved in a single blink. He quickly rose up, looking to his right to see...Gavin?

Philip looked over to his left again, to see that Nathan was gone. The teenager slowly stepped forward, very cautiously. "What is going on!?" she shouted. Gavin rose to his feet, looking forward to see Philip and the girl. Philip looked down, to see a broken twig that Nathan had stepped on. Gavin quickly walked towards the two. "Why is this happening?" the girl cried out.

Gavin woke up, gasping. Nathan jolted his head to Gavin, startled by the sudden noise. "What...What's going on?" Gavin quickly spit out, keeping eye contact with Nathan. "I don't know..." Nathan responded, his eyes wandering around the room. A doctor quickly walked into the room, Nathan's eyes locking to them. "You're awake!" she smiled. "What happened?" Gavin inquired, having a slightly fearful tone. She looked at him, silent for a moment before responding. "You were found passed out near the police department. Your boss, Chris, found you, and called an ambulance." she responded. Nathan looked down to the right, before quickly speaking up. "We need to get out of here." he said.

Philip looked at the girl, rushing over to her. He grabbed her shoulders, looking into her eyes. "Calm down. CALM DOWN. We need to stay calm so we can stay-" his speech cut off. The girl quickly tripped backwards, falling down. She was the only one left. She closed her eyes, waiting to disappear. When she opened them...She was still there.

Philip groaned, slowly opening his eyes. He was on his kitchen floor, with a shattered coffee mug beside him. Upon realizing where he was, he got up as fast as he could. He dashed to his front window, peering out. There were cars occasionally driving by, and civilians scattered across the sidewalk, all covered by the bright sunlight. He quickly grabbed his car keys from his kitchen counter, and rushed out of his home, to get in his car.
