Linh watched the stairs outstretching upwards as they floated beside.
"Fuckin' hell. You're saying that if I was like those land dwellers down there I'd have to walk up those?", she complained. Being honest, she felt pity towards the three of them who were well below Folle and her.
"Well, definitely. But one of my siblings might be kind enough to teleport you to the top.", Folle answered, with a sweet smile.
"Wait, how many of you guys are there?", Linh questioned. She heard about the siblings and speculated how many of them there would be.
"There are 22 of us, though in the mansion live only a smaller half. Most of them spend time in the Awake World or somewhere in the desert."
"Oh.", Linh stopped in her tracks as she looked around them before snorting soundly, "Your parents were surely rabbits.".
"Actually,", Folle started. Embarrassment was visible on his face. "–we came to life, we do not have any parents or ancestors. We came to live.", he explained.
Linh was expecting such an answer. She suspected that not even a celestial mother would be sane after 22 children. After all, her mother needed 6 children to drive off the edge.
She shook her head: ‘No time for this stuff'. She looked around her once again, noticing the change of terrain. Pale trees and flowery patches outstretched into oblivion beyond the two. A small path full of pebbles wiggled through. It lead through many separated wooden arches that had well enough between each other.
"We are currently on the back end of the mansion, here are the Arcana gardens.", Folle explained. He reached his hand to show all the beauty that unravelled beyond them. "The numbers on the gates are the number of each corresponding Arcana. For example, this here is number twenty, Judgement's garden.". He stopped to investigate the garden. As it he searched for something, or someone.
Between two white Mulberry trees stood a figure, draped in a dress that pooled on the ground. The main body of the dress was a white color, with what seemed to be crème highlights. A strange black color crawled up the ends of their dress and choked the white bit by bit as it climbed. Their wings were also in a similar fashion and left Linh wondering if they were even real ones.
Folle frowned, "Dina doesn't seem in the best of moods, I suggest we leave immediately.".
Linh nodded along as she hurried her pace over the pebble path. She passed by bushes of Azalea, Ragged Robin and Peppermint. There were more white Mullberries in the distance. Though they seemed to get more dispersed as they advanced through. When they were at the end of the garden, visible by another wooden arch, Linh stopped by a peppermint bush.
‘It sure has been a long fuckin' time since I smelled one of these.'
As she was about to grab a leaf from the bush, Folle yanked her arm away.
"I'm sorry but we should hurry, and if you touch any of the plants she will feel it. We don't want to provoke her now.", he whispered.
"Alright, alright. Don't get ya thing in a twist, I'll just smell it.", Linh whispered back. She pulled her arm away, causing Folle to let go.
She lowered herself from the air. Once standing, she squatted down to the plant's level. She leaned her face close, trying to inhale- to smell it, with some difficulty. She found herself unable to breathe well. But as soon as the smell reached her nose she stumbled up, causing a light blackout as nausea washed over her being. The smell of peppermint used to be her favourite thing ever. But now it carried a grim atmosphere, which she felt like something she could remember but no pictures came upon her mind.
"Are you alright? The mood must be poisoning you, let's advance to Terra's garden.", Folle said this with a touch of hesitation. He grabbed Linh's arm anyway and started walking towards the next wooden arch.
"Alright let's go, but let go of me.", Linh let out a low growl. She wasn't a fan of getting dragged around, she was her own person after all.
"Oh, yes. Sorry", Folle let go of her hand, leaving her to follow his quick pace on her own.
Once they passed the gate with the number twenty-one, Linh felt a tad bit weird. There was a weird sensation along with irritation for what she couldn't describe in the garden. She never even met ‘Terra', but whoever they were, one part of her soul boiled towards them.
Once she let all her senses float on the garden's sensations, she found it to be a critical opposite of the other. The garden looked like a rock disposal. There was no path to anywhere, the trees stood withered and on their weak branches hung piles of clothes. Sometimes here and there there were a bush or two of lavender or a withered rose rising from the cracks in the rocks. The rocks in question were in soil. The garden's smell in its entirety was of a synthetic lavender, it felt like it wasn't real at all.
Folle cleared his throat.
"The garden, as you see, isn't cared for as it should. It's more of a rock and clothes dumping ground. I don't know how the roses and lavender survived. They're quite old, Terra planted them many years ago, when he wasn't so into stitching us clothes."
Linh nodded as they walked through and shortly saw another arch.
"Next up is my garden.", Folle said as they passed below the wooden arch. The pebble path appeared once again. At every side of it was a crowd of alternating flowers: Buttercups and Mezereons. The display was childish, but something felt off. Linh sure enough discovered what: after the crowd of flowers, the ground was rocky, as it was in the garden prior. It seemed as if the flowers got placed there so the garden would seem like there was care put into it.
Folle smiled at Linh. The smile didn't seem genuine, but Linh let it slide. As they walked on, she felt the blood loss on the way had lowered her levitation bit by bit. In the end, she resorted to walking when they were in the middle of Folle's garden. Feeling herself drag her weight like a sack, she finally felt the immense pain in her stomach and thigh. The two have stopped bleeding by now. She grunted every few steps as she dragged herself across the path.
"Don't worry, we are soon to stop.", Folle assured her. He looked in front of them. Soon they passed through the garden and stood in front of a large dark wooden door. Folle tapped onto the door, as a loud grunt came from the other side and the door creaked as it opened.
A masked person opened the door. Upon closer inspection, it was visible that they weren't showing any skin at all. They had a robe that, to Dina, reached to the floor and pooled around them. Their sleeves were over their hands for approximately one more hand. The neck part extended to cover up to what Linh assumed was their mouth. They had a hood over their head and the mask they wore had a simple poker face. The longer Linh looked at it seemed to be changing emotions. Above their head was a four-point wheel, that when read clockwise spelled out "ROTA".
"OH? Joy of joys! Is this you, brother Folle?", a jolly voice sprang from the masked figure, taking Linh by surprise at best.
"Yes, yes."
"I sense something else here... Hm, it seems like human warmth. But it seems rather cold, don't you think, brother?", the voice continued.
"Sorry Rota, I don't have time now. Strength is about to come down on the other humans and I need to get this one patched. Do you know where Papissa is?", Folle shortened the small talk. Linh was thankful for this. The pain of standing and enduring the stomach and thigh stinging was annoying. She kept blinking away the tears that formed in her eyes as she waited.
"Hmm…", Rota hummed as he looked back inside, "Papi! Papissa! Fool Boy is asking for you!!".
Linh could hear Folle's eyes rolling in their sockets while Rota called for Papissa.
Rota moved away from the door as a woman appeared in front of the two.
The High Priestess, known among her siblings as Papissa, was a tall woman with a very thin figure. This was visible by the bones peeking from the skin at her shoulders and collarbone. Her skin was white, with a slight tint of the normal color skin from the few times she went to the Awake World. Her hair was a dirty blonde color and hanged free at her waist. At least this is what Linh thought. Only some of the hair was visible under a cloth that extended from her papal tiara. The cloth was a soft blue color. The dress she wore that reached to the floor but didn't pool around like with the others, it was too a blue color. The sleeves on her dress reached halfway on her palm. The hands also had white gloves over them, as if with an attempt to hide them. The neck line of the dress only started on the shoulders, so the collarbones stood exposed. Over her neck, Papissa had a chain necklace with a large cross. The cross fit in the center of the exposed skin. The same style cross floated above her head and papal tiara. Her eyes were the same golden as with everybody else. Her lips tightened in a neutral stance, but even with that she seemed intimidating due to the eyes.
She first looked at Folle for a moment, fluttering her eyes before shifting her gaze to Linh.
"A wounded human you bring me?" she asked as she stared at Linh from head to toe.
Linh kept quiet, following Folle's instructions.
"Yes, I was hoping you could help with the wounds.", Folle said with respect and a slight bow. Linh couldn't bring herself to bow though, the stomach hurt too much.
"You caught me at a good time, Folle.
"You bought a wounded human, Folle?"
Linh stayed quiet. Even though she didn't like any of this stuff, her stomach hurt like a bitch and she wanted to get patched up.
Folle half-bowed when Papissa appeared at the door.
"I'm sorry to be bothering you, sister. But if you'd help her out, please.", Folle asked, as polite as he could.
"Hm, well you struck me at a curious time, Folle. It seems I will be of help today."
Folle felt the tension he held in himself wash out as he thanked everything holy for the luck he was having now. He handed the clothes he was carrying the whole way with them to Linh. He knew he will not be in with the room while the healing was taking place.
Papissa clasped Linh's hand with both of hers as a smallish smile peaked on the corners of her mouth.
"Come with me, please.", she said as she entered the first mansion room. She didn't waste any time before heading to a door with a cross above it. Folle followed the two into the mansion but stopped and let them go into the room on their own.
"Hah~ That human seems weird, wouldn't you say too, Fool?", Rota teased.
Folle stayed quiet.
Linh entered the room with the cross with Papissa, she was still quiet. Papissa let go of her hand to close the door before turning back to Linh.
"I'm sorry, but you will need to take off that sweater and jeans. I guess Terra gave you a new pair?", Papissa said, her voice passive as it could be.
Linh felt a bit uneasy with the instructions but complied. She didn't want to spend the rest of her time here with an open stomach and having to walk around.
She felt some embarrassment, standing in front of a person she met a few moments ago now in her underwear and shoes.
Papissa took her right hand, grasping the end of the whole glove on it and pulling it off. To Linh's surprise, the hand seemed to be glowing and she had to look away from it when the hand was shining in its fullest.
"This is only a one-time fix I can do with the palm, so please try to be more careful.", Papissa explained. She neared Linh, who felt the strong urge to back away from her all a sudden— to escape. Linh somehow kept herself in place as Papissa neared her and connected her palm with the stomach.
The already blinding glow glowing brighter.
Linh couldn't help but let a few droplets of tears trickle down her cheeks. Pain took over her stomach that stitched itself together, the glow was also painful to her eyes.
It felt like time wasn't moving at all while the wound was stitching up.
The glow of the hand was reflecting over the baby blue walls of the room. The silver crosses hanging across helped reflect it in even a more cruel manner. Linh ended up closing her eyes to stop the blinding from all corners of her vision as she endured the pain.
All a sudden, the pain stopped.
In a few moments after, the pain came again, and Linh was ready this time, so she endured it better. The pain was, she guessed, her thigh stitching.
This pain was gone faster than the other one. Linh held her eyes shut for a few moments before opening them again, to be sure. She saw that Papissa's hand was back in the glove, and that she was holding her new clothes towards Linh.
Now able to bow, Linh bowed to Papissa (Even though she didn't exactly want to. She did it for the matter of not getting murdered while in the room alone with her.) before putting her new clothes on.
These clothes were light. The perfect light for the desert heat that has been slapping the group in the face the whole time. Her shirt was a long sleeve, though pretty thin but in the same green color the previous sweater was in. She also got black leggings that ended above the ankle.
"Th...Thank you.", Linh whispered. GOD she HATED saying such polite things, but it was still for the sake of not getting murdered.
"You're welcome, human.", Papissa uttered. She reached her gloved left hand towards Linh's head.
"Let me see how you got those."
As Papissa's palm connected with Linh's forehead, there was a hiss, such like of skin burning. Papissa yanked her palm off the forehead with a horrified expression on her face.
"I'm sorry, this is abnormal. You should return now.", she said in a stern voice. She placed her left hand, that now had a hole in the palm area, on Linh's shoulder.
Linh stood confused for a moment but soon enough her vision faded to black. She was not aware if she was still back there, or if all this was a horrible, horrible dream that she is about to wake from.
Papissa watched Linh fade away after teleporting her back to the desert. She stood there for a few moments before storming out of the door.
"There is something wrong with this girl, someone needs to watch out."
