Penelope didn’t know how she came across the two wulfen children, or how she felt obligated to get them to other wolves, even if it killed her. She’d found them in the middle of the woods and somehow they hadn’t tried to kill her, even tho their species were enemies. She just put it down to them being children, even tho it felt like there was an itch at the back of her mind.
The girls in question were currently curled up together in the back of her van, their wolf forms the size of large puppies. She focused back on the road as she drove, it was late, and she should stop but there was just something convincing her to continue driving. She had the radio on very low so the girls could sleep but she could still hear the gentle sounds of one of the late night songs when suddenly it changed to the radio host’s voice.
“Urgent news, there’s a serial killer lose in Brinkton. He’s six foot six, has dark hair and is suspected to be armed and dangerous. Please do not approach him.”
Penelope shook her head, turning the radio off. The last thing she needed was to freak herself out about a serial killer when all she had for company were two six year old wolf girls.
About ten minutes later she felt a nudge at her elbow and she turned her head briefly off the road to look back and saw that Belle was awake. Penelope smiled softly at the little thing who preferred to be in her wolf form when she slept and pet her head softly before motioning to the seat next to her as her eyes went back to the road.
Two seconds later she was sitting next to a child who looked to be about ten. “Penny, where are we?”
“We’re about an hour out of Brinkton, where we’ll stop and get some supplies and hopefully some rest in an actual bed.” Belle nodded, always being the quiet one of the two twins, taking it in.
They drove in silence for another few minutes before Penelope heard her small voice ask “Do you think we’ll find our pack, Penelope?”
Penelope sighed softly to herself as she focused on the road. She knew this question was coming up, and she didn’t know what to tell the girls. She had no clue where their pack was, and no idea how they managed to get left behind when they were only children. She wasn't a wolf, but she knew how packs worked. If you were pack, you were pack. Meaning you were never left behind, especially the children.
“I dont know, little one. But I promised I’d look after you and your sister, didn’t I?”
Belle looked out the window as she thought to herself quietly, murmuring “Would you keep us if we can’t find them?”
Penelope hadn’t thought about it much, but she already knew the answer “Of course I would, little one. I’m not going to abandon you two.”
