The MIM library hires students to help manage the four floors and botanical garden. Alex never gets tired of walking between the rows of books and plants during his shifts. During his shift today, he takes a whole cart of fiction books to reshelve. His co-workers ask if he needs help, and he politely declines. He treasures times like this where he can drown out the world with music so there are only him, music, and books. That is, until someone taps his shoulder. “Yes? Can I help you?” he is already asking before he can see the person. Someone with ink black skin and gold irises is there. “Felix? What are you doing here?”
Instead of answering, Felix asks, “When’s your next break?” His voice is slightly muffled by the surgical mask he has on. Regardless of it, Alex can hear the hoarseness from the constant crying.
He checks his watch. “In 10-ish minutes. Do you need me now? I can ask to get off early.”
“No, don’t. Finish your shelving. I’ll wait in the break room.” Before he can go, Alex grabs his hoodie sleeve.
“I—” His brain traps his words. He glimpses at Felix's warm, golden eyes. “I’ll try to finish quickly...” He lets go.
Felix blinks a few times, a little confused, then walks away.
"I’m glad you’re okay.” Alex says too late. Once again, he's alone between the rows of books.
