The message contained two names: Panashe Juwawo and Yatuta Msukwa. I ran both names in our system and they both came out clean. Sali had asked Ntawale and Mwase to meet us at her house.
“Juwawo is an accountant at a factory. And Yatuta is a high ranking soldier in the army.” Ama said.
“What do you think it is?” I asked looking at Salifya.
“It could be they are operatives of Waranda or victims to be of Waranda.” She responded.
“Why would they want an accountant?” I asked.
“He is an accountant for a Quentocin factory.” Ama replied. “He could be doctoring records and giving Waranda Quentocin for free.”
“Your mole said urgent I think we should go stalk them today.” Salifya said. “Ntawale follow the soldier. Naledi keep an eye on the soldier digitally. Mwase follow the accountant. Xo keep an eye on the accountant digitally. Me, Kuleza and Ipy will try to find out as much as possible about both of them. Lwando is dangerous so be careful. Ama I want you to try and find the mole it’s just as important as finding these men. The mole obviously knows a lot more than they are telling Ipyana.”
After Xo and Nale located the two targets, the two D.I.s left the Ndhlazi residence to begin stalking the men.
Xo, Sali, Naledi and Ama were all hurdled up in the Xo’s workroom. Xo had the best equipment so I liked working from his station than my own. Salifya and I went through their financials, their social media and routines at work with a fine tooth comb and so far we had found nothing. Xo was watching Juwawo meet someone at Ufulu park. Mwase was watching the meet from a distance. It was around 7pm.
“Take the man down Mwase. He is about to kill Juwawo.” Salifya said glancing at Xo’s screen. “Just shoot his hand. Do it now.”
Mwase shot the man’s hand just when he was about to take out a blaster with a silencer. Mwase made the man kick it to him.
“Don’t kill me.” Juwawo begged.
“It’s him who wanted to kill you not me.” Mwase threw cuffs at the assassin. The assassin cuffed himself.
“Stand as far away from the assassin as possible. Fya is coming to pick him up.” Salifya said.
“He needs medical attention.” Mwase retorted. “I am calling this in.”
“If an ambulance comes to get him he will kill the paramedics before they treat him. If you stand too close to him. He will kill you too. Just wait, Fya is near you.” Sali said.
“Naledi tell Ntawale to bring the soldier at our house in case he too is a target.” Salifya said. Mwase brought Juwawo at Xo’s house.
“Who are you? How did you know I was in the park?” Juwawo asked.
“You don’t ask the questions here we do. We just saved your life. Show us some gratitude by answering our questions.” Salifya perched herself on the couch across from Juwawo. I sat down next to her.
He drew his breath in. “Okay, okay, I have been noticing some inconsistencies in the accounts at my work place. I told my boss about it because I thought one of the senior accountants was stealing. He asked me to meet him at the park to discuss it. I just thought he didn’t want to meet me at the office in case the person who is stealing heard us.” He held out his hands which were trembling. “He tried to kill me. He is there one stealing. He tried to kill me.”
“You are safe now,” I said.
“Juwawo’s boss is Waranda. Find out as much as you can on him.” Sali said glancing at me. I nodded my head and went to Xo’s work room.
“Fya is offline.” Xo announced.
“The assassin got to her.” Salifya grunted. She said based on how he walked and surveyed his environment he was definitely Magodise. A group of ex-mzengeli and ex-ulumba turned assassins.
Xo looked up from his computer. “She is back online but the assassin is gone.”
“Yatuta is an operative for the Waranda.” Kuleza said from behind his computer. “Warn D.I. Ntawale.”
I called Ntawale. He was not answering. Naledi, Mwase and I rushed to his last location. When we found Atuweni, he had been shot. The soldier was gone.
I did not know whether it was appropriate to visit Atuweni in his assigned room but I cared for him as a friend so I did with Naledi, Salifya and Xo. Yatuta shot Ntawale in the stomach. The doctor said had we delayed he would have died from blood loss.
“How are you?” Naledi asked.
“I feel like I just got shot but I thank God to be alive.” His gaze was fixed on me. I could see that spark in his eyes again. A voltage ran through my heart. I looked at the bed he was on.
“We are glad you are okay.” Xo said.
Mwase sat down on the bed. He had gotten up for the chair he was sitting on to give us chairs to sit on. “So Yatuta was a Waranda operative?”
Salifya nodded. “We figured it out too late. Sorry you got shot.”
“It’s alright. I am just glad it was just me. I would hate to think if any of you had been with me.” Atuweni was still looking at me. He meant me.
“We have to go. Find out more and get Juwawo to safety.” I rushed out of the room. Ama was getting Juwawo into Utawaleza under a fake name. I knew this but I lied to get out of there.
“That man is really into you.” Xo said as we exited Watanja’s clinic.
“You need to tell him how you feel soon before his feelings deepen,” Sali said.
“He just got shot. Why would I want to break his heart now?”
“He will be all healed up soon, so you can break his heart when he returns to work.” Naledi snorted.
