The Things That We Hide

Chapter Ten

Chapter Ten

Aug 24, 2018

Rosie's team lost by one narrow point. It had been a tough game and Rosie's shoulder still stung after her collision with Gabriel but the mini-match ended in smiles and pats on the back, congratulations for the hard work. No matter how many times the Ospreys were told by Sinclair that they would need to keep that attitude with the real opposition in the Championships, they were either going to be bitter losers or smug winners behind the friendly facade. Denise sauntered over to Rosie and her teammates who were attempting to get back the last remaining breaths they had left in their lungs. She patted Juliet's sweaty shoulder, grinning ear to ear as always. The Ospreys captain was eternally optimistic even when the game was getting bleak and they could sense their loss in the air.

"You guys were nuts, I could barely keep up with you!" Denise said. Her voice was warm and full of sincere admiration. Rosie's team were still too out of breath to reply and just beamed back in thanks. Their captain left them to return to their other teammates to offer the same praise. Before Rosie could form a new thought Coach Sinclair blew lightly at his whistle, still loud enough to cause Nate to jolt in surprise. With a chuckle from Juliet the three of them turned to face Coach. He motioned a ringed finger, a silent message that the team had learned to interpret as him wanting to chat with them and Rosie raised her dark brows. Although she was convinced that Kieran Sinclair wasn't demented enough to pull the same stunt with the Ospreys that the Squirrels' coach had pulled, the fear was still there. Other than that horrible notion, Rosie couldn't think of any reason why Coach would stop them so early in the practice session. The team gathered around him and now that she was up close, Rosie could tell that he was clearly nervous about something. She couldn't wait to find out what was making the Coach Sinclair feel so on edge.

The Ospreys stood waiting, most still sweating from the mini-matches. Quentin and Gabriel were the exceptions, they seemed to never get worn out which became a good trait to have during a demanding game. Coach Sinclair was making uneasy eye contact with Rosie before he finally decided to offer an explanation for the abrupt interruption. If he had delayed it any longer he would have had to deal with the team's growing impatience. He shuffled his notes between his hands uncomfortably. "So, uh," Coach began slowly, "I'm going to have to stop practice a bit earlier today."

On a normal day this would have been music to the team's ears. Despite the Queen Mary's Ospreys' victorious yet austere reputation that had been built over the last five years, the current team would never say no to an early finish. However, the Championships were two weeks away and they couldn't afford to miss any valuable practice time. Denise spoke up first, obvious and understandable annoyance in her tone. "Wait, what? Coach, you know we can't risk missing any practice, you've been hammering that into our heads since January!" she said, crossing her arms. Rosie didn't fail to notice Quentin giving Denise's shoulder a quick squeeze. At this point the door to the male changing room swung open which let in a cool draft from outside the sports hall. It was getting increasingly more stuffy and the team were thankful for the slither of air. Along with the breeze entered two police officers; Rosie could almost feel the wave of confusion that fell onto her teammates in that moment.

Rosie saw Aidan glance at Max when the officers entered the gym through the corner of her eye. They were as thick as thieves and Rosie didn't doubt the idea that they had committed a petty crime one time or another. Aside from the boys' newfound shiftiness, the police definitely weren't here for them. Nobody spoke out loud. Instead the team just looked to Sinclair for an explanation, multiple eyebrows furrowed in deep puzzlement. The pair of police, a man and a woman, joined Coach's side as they observed the group of sweaty teenagers in front of them. "I'm cutting practice short because these two officers would like to ask you lot a few questions about Alfie Underwood." Coach announced.

Rosie's stomach collapsed to the hard wood floor.
