It was almost 9 pm when Arno had left the police station, he was now crossing the dark alleys of the city, to go to the town hall where he had an appointment with an old friend.
He had met Angie at university, at that time, he thought he would become a lawyer, she, on the other hand, was already preparing for her entrance exam to the police but was taking law courses in parallel, not only to ensure herself a plan B in case of failure but especially to be able to benefit from scholarships and student housing because her family did not really have the means to subsidize her studies.
They immediately got along and spent most of their time together, whether for revisions or evenings. Because if Arno was rather of a discreet and shy temperament, Angie was a real electric battery and always found events or evenings in which she dragged Arno almost by force. It was during one of these evenings that they met the girl who very quickly integrated their group: Erica, a medical student three years older than them. The three of them became almost inseparable and had lots of fun together.
When Erica died, Arno became detective exam and Angie had obtained a position at the police human resources office. They had hardly seen each other since. But when Arno had this vision of Erica, he thought it was time to contact her old friend, to ask her to use her access rights to finally get a hand on the file of the investigation related to Erica’s death. So he called her and today they had an appointment so that she could give him a copy of that famous file.
When he arrived at his destination, she was waiting for him, which was rather unusual because she had never been familiar with punctuality.
She was dressed in a rather chic burgundy suit but still wore her green hair, a colour she had never left since she had lost a bet a few years earlier. He sighed... Not that it didn't fit her, quite the opposite but he had thought that now that she had a serious job, she would have returned to a more neutral style.
As usual, she was bursting with energy and monopolizing the conversation, he had not arrived for two minutes that she was already dragging him almost by force to a restaurant announcing that he would have to pay the bill.
She had reserved a table in a gourmet restaurant a few blocks away. The place was pretty, the menu appetizing and the atmosphere pleasant.
During the meal, they discussed things and others reminding that time when the three of them were acting crazy. It was only at the time of the coffee that they spoke of the real reason that had led them to see each other again.
Angie then handed him a USB key:
Here are the files you asked me, Erica's, I understand but the other one? Why are you interested in that SIS girl?
- I don't know, but when I touched her last time, I had a vision of Erica... I feel there must be a connection...
Angie, who was not expecting such an answer, exclaimed
- Huh.... You made me risk losing my job just because you had a vision.... You're stupid or something!
This answer had been expressed out loud, without any restraint. Around them, people turned around and murmured their indignation. Arno, for his part, realized that basing himself on a vision could seem stupid or aberrant but something within him was convinced of the relevance of his action. Despite everything, Angie's reaction was more than justified, which is why he apologized in a low voice, like a child being scolded.
Angie's face brightened immediately, she was not angry with him, on the contrary, she even encouraged him to continue the investigation.
- Don't worry, I'm teasing you, but you better solve the mystery of Erica's death quickly so you can finally mourn... Do I have to remind you that I'm in love and tired of waiting!
This little sentence might seem ridiculous, but it energized him, she was right, he had to clarify the mystery of Erica's death to finally be at peace and be able to move forward.
Despite everything, he was rather sceptical about Angie's real feelings, with her he never knew on which foot to dance and he remembered hearing her make the same kind of statement to Erica. On second thought, he had never heard her talk seriously about her feelings.
They left shortly afterwards, promising to see each other more often.
