Chapter 2
Victoria sat slumped but motionless on her throne.
She could hear the maids in the other room behind her throne even if she did not want to.
Perks of being a demon queen, she supposed.
“It is surprising that the Queen who let us starve for so long is letting them hunt again. I was certain she would let us all die.”
“Hush your mouth! You do not speak ill of the Queen!”
“What is anyone going to do? There's no one around anyway.”
Victoria winced.
“True but….”
“But what!? We are not allowed to voice our opinion? Demons got to eat too you know? It's not our fault the way we take in nurishment.”
Victoria heard them exit the room after cleaning it. She turned to her side in her throne and put her feet up into a relaxed position, she sighed softly.
“What is the point anymore?” She murmured.
She tilted her head back and waited, and waited…….and waited…….and waited.
Time had no meaning to an immortal being such as herself. She didn't care about anything at all in her existence so why bother to do anything if you do not need to? She dealt with the annoying cries of her subjects and set up a system with the humans so less deaths would occur. So now she can just fall into the abyss and not move for an eternity, right?
But it seemed fate was kind of an asshole, she thought, as she heard one of the goblin attendants rushing to her throne room after only five years into her slumber.
“Mi’lady! The humans King wishes to hold a meeting with you present.” The goblin reported after kneeling in front of the steps that elevated her throne.
Maybe if I ignore him he will leave, she thought.
She ignored him for several moments before he repeated his statement with more urgency.
UGHHHHHHHH, she thought.
“Cant you all just leave me alone?”
“Mi’lady I can not, you are our Queen, our ruler, the one who brought a sense of safety and a steadier supply of food for our people. Now the King you made the deal with that brought both of those things is asking for your presence. It is your duty to oblige.”
She sat motionless on her throne for another moment before she forced her stiff limbs to turn and sit up. A puff of dust fell from her body as she moved and she sneezed as it swirled in the air around her. Should she have had the maid dust her once in awhile?
“SIGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH…………… What did the King say?”
The goblins bulbous head lifted up and he grinned with his sharp toothed mouth.
“As I said your Highness, he merely wishes for you to attend a meeting, I believe it is with the other kingdoms leaders as well. But this is the first time for the ruler of the Demons Kingdom to be invited. We can consider it a good thing, it means we are starting to become peaceful with the other kingdoms since the start of your rule.”
She wondered if they would serve alcohol there. Maybe she could drown her depression in a good drink there and coast through the entire meeting.
“ Mi’lady… honestly your subjects are starting to worry about you. You do not leave your throne at all, you do not try to enjoy food or do… well anything. Maybe a trip out of the kingdom will help you…. work things out?”
“You mean…. The subjects who used to despise me are now worried about my well being? Is that not comical somehow?” She rolled her eyes.
“No! Its not like that at all Mi’lady! Your subjects basically worship you! You are the reason wives no longer fear their husbands will not return the next day after a hunt. The people do not fear a Hero will come and destroy life as we know it! Everyone is grateful to you!”
Victoria sighed.
Honestly, she thought, this goblin talks to much.
But she supposed she would have to deal with this matter. It would be a shame if their relationship with the humans Kingdom wavered. The demons might have issues getting food from the humans prisoners in jail.
The humans and demons came to an agreement several months after Victoria became Queen. She sent several letters and attended one meeting outside the kingdom between the humans domain and hers on neutral grounds. They agreed the demons would be allowed entry into jails to bottle human despair and torment the inmates until they no longer wanted to do evil. Of course Victoria had put strict regulations on the demons when it came to who they could farm food off of. Demons had an innate sense of seeing evil in humans and only those truly deserving of punishment were feed off of. It saved people who only committed petty crimes or made a mistake in life. Even a few demons were admitted into the police systems in the human realms to identify those who were guilty of crimes. Some demons worked to catch criminals on the streets to feed off of and would bring them to justice. This lead to humans fearing demons less unless you did something wrong. Instead of being a force of sheer chaos demons became a way to bring peace and safety among humans. There was still stigma but demons were no longer killed on sight.
A win, win in Victorias opinion.
Both kingdoms could prosper, she thought, no need for petty fighting that just wasted energy.
“Mi’lady will you go?” The goblin asked.
She sighed again and grimaced.
“I suppose I must.”
