When dinner was over, Harry walked around the castle. They had rebuilt it well. All the teachers and a few volunteers, Harry included, and used a similar spell as the one Dumbledore had used the night Harry met Professor Slughorn. The professor was off doing his own thing again when he heard of Snape's health status.
Still, the spell wasn't as powerful as the war and if you knew where to look, you could still see scratches and cracks in the walls where it had been smashed. Harry glared at the faded skid marks where incredibly powerful dark curse had hit the wall.
All of these details were so small, nobody really noticed them. Even Hermione was oblivious to them, though she had her nose stuck in a book most the time. Harry could tell she was having a hard time with the war, but he didn't know if she was hiding it or dealing with it, so he just left her alone to do her thing.
Just then, Harry started hearing the quiet sobs of a classmate. He quietly sped up his walk to see who was crying on what must have been the stairs.
Sure enough, there sat Luna sitting with a Hufflepuff girl who was sobbing. Even Luna looked sad when she turned her heavy eyes toward him. "Hello Harry." She said in her sweet voice. The Hufflepuff girl stopped suddenly and stared up and Harry in shock.
The two locked gazes for a moment before she collapsed into tears again. Luna rubbed her back soothingly. Harry looked to see no one was around and cast a silencing charm around them. And knelt down.
"Hey. Do you want to talk about it." He said in an unexplainably gentle voice. After a few seconds she looked up, swallowing her sobs. "I'm sorry Potter. I'm so sorry. I should have fought harder. I should have been more prepared." She said, her control slipping slightly as she spoke.
Harry recognized the situation immediately. "Hey, no. Shhhh." He grabbed her hands and looked her in the eyes. "You fought brilliantly. None of what happened was your fault." He said. She looked into his eyes and saw the strength and truth he put behind his words. But still. She just wanted to cry.
"Then why? Why did my sister die. I was right by her side. I tried with all my might to keep her safe, but she still-" the hufflepuff started to cry again and Harry just kelt there, rubbing his thumbs across the back of the hands soothingly and Luna did the same on her back.
Eventually, the girl got ahold of herself. "Today would have been her birthday you know. Had she not fought like I told her too. I'm glad though. I was happy to see her so proud and fired up. She really looked up to you you know. Kept talking about the stuff she learned in the DA, whatever that was, and taught me some of it." That hit Harry like a brick. Then she gave shaky breath, seemed to have calmed down some and brought up a sad smile. "Potter, Thanks." She said. Harry looked at her with the same gentle kindness he had before. "For what?" "For teaching her, for being here for me. And thanks to you too Lovegood. It's kinda... nice. Talking to people who know first hand what is was like going through all that." She sighed again and nodded to Luna "I think I'm okay now." Standing up and giving Harry one last grateful smile, Luna lead the poor girl back to her dorms.
Harry watched them go, his gentle smile slipping away, leaving a very sorrowful face to show through.
Yes, that was not the first time Harry had soothe a crying classmate like that. Not the first time they weren't alone either. Sometimes he ended up soothing a small group of friend, usually 2 or 3, other times it'd be Luna with them. He walked down the hall, lost in thought when he almost bumped into Headmistress McGonagal.
"Oh! Good Evening Potter. You were just the wizard I was looking for. If you would please, follow me" not even waiting for a response she walked off. Harry followed reluctantly. What had he done now, he wondered.
