Finnegan and Grey exited the classroom and entered into the school yard for the recess.
“This is rather,” something made Grey sneeze before he could continue. “Bothersome,” he finished after he sneezed, he rubbed his nose and sniffed.
“I think it is great!” Finnegan exclaimed. “We can finally learn what we were born to do! I can finally hold a sword, learn to be a King like my father!” Finnegan was filled with excitement. “I’ll command an entire army, Grey! And, you will be my right hand Mage! Imagine all the adventure! You did tell me adventure would be coming like in those comic books of Arthur and his son.”
“This isn’t the sort of adventure that I seek, Fyn,” said Grey, sceptically. “Arthur and his son, is a comic book series someone wrote, it probably never happened. But, look at us –this is really happening. Why is everything changing so suddenly? I knew this morning was strange, even my mother was strange. She secretly placed this strange sapphire dragon badge on me,” Grey sighed, feeling spent after the lesson. “It will be more hard work than just sweeping autumn leaves into a black plastic bag, this is entirely different,” groaned Grey.
“Grey, this will be fun! It might not be hard at all! I always wanted to hold a sword and learn how to fight,” Finnegan said, enthusiastically.
Grey sighed in defeat, he could not explain to Finnegan that this meant they would have to endure normal average classes and new classes. This would mean that they needed to do more, they would need to really pay attention to new things being said, and it would take up more of their time –more of his time.
He wouldn’t have time to idly watch the clouds shift, he wouldn’t have time to sit and experience the quiet air, he wouldn’t have time to read comic books and most importantly he wouldn’t have time to take mini-naps, afternoon naps and normal naps.
Why was everything changing?
“Hi,” the foreign voice interrupted Grey’s thoughts. “I am Riona Iris.” She pulled out her hand in a greet.
“I am Finnegan Rhys,” Finnegan grinned, he clasped his hand in Riona’s “And this here is Grey Ethel.”
He let go of Riona’s hand and forced Grey’s hand out of his blue tunic pocket and ensured that Riona and Grey’s hands met.
Grey shook her hand awkwardly.
“Yes, I am Grey Ethel,” he confirmed Finnegan’s comment.
“It’s good to meet you guys, I think we will definitely be meeting a lot in future. Let’s do our best!” She smiled cheerfully.
“Our best?” Grey asked, dimly. “I think I want to only do less, much less than one percent of our best. If my best alone is only a third of one hundred then I would do 10 percent of my best considering you guys plan to do your best I will only do less than one percent.”
“As long as you try to do what best you can,” she said, smiling again.
Grey turned to Finnegan and whispered from Riona’s ears,
“What’s wrong with her? Are all our classmates this optimistic?”
Finnegan just nodded in glee. “We shall do our best Riona! Our one hundred percent best,” he said.
Grey stared at both of them dismally; he gazed around the school yard and witnessed all the excitement of his classmates. They looked as happy, cheerful and sparkly as Finnegan and this red haired girl, Riona. Was this natural? This extravagant change of more hard work and effort was that considered happiness?
“I need to cool my head,” Grey suddenly tumbled out. “I need to go.”
But Finnegan held on to his wrist. “Hold on to his hand, Riona!” requested Finnegan and Riona obliged, she gripped and entwined her fingers into Grey’s.
“What are you guys doing? I understand why Finnegan is doing this but you Riona, I don’t even know you!” Grey stammered out.
“Don’t worry, Riona, keep holding on to his hand. He usually runs away, so we have to be a team and support him to stay,” Finnegan explained and Riona acted as if she understood, she nodded with a smile and tightly gripped Grey s hand firmly, ensuring he stayed put.
“I guess until the break is over we are gonna be stuck like glue, my grandma always says, once stuck never broken,” said Riona.
Finnegan smiled as if he had found a long lost friend, “Could I use that saying too? It sounds rather wise.”
“Sure!” Riona gleamed whilst Grey felt a sudden trouble in his veins.
