Jason Terry, I will admit, was not what I expected at all. I had expected a man that cared only about himself, money, and maybe his family or someone who possed a true threat to The Society but he was neither of those things. When I met Jason Terry all that he talked about was his family. He never mentioned money once nor himself unless it involved something about his family. The man was paranoid, extremely paranoid, but only because he didn't want his family to get hurt because of the choices he was making. To bad though, his paranoia hadn't sniffed me out yet, which was good for me and soon to be bad for him.
"It's not like I want my family to live like this." he rambled, "it's just that...I don't want them getting hurt because of the choices that I made when I was younger. I just hope that one day they'll understand why I did everything I did and that they'll forgive me even though I don't deserve it." I nodded quietly and sipped the tea in front of me. I had no reason to speak as most of the people I talked to often only wanted to be listened to and if I was going to pose as a secret protective agent then I might as well act like one. "Oh, I'm probably talking too much, aren't I." he fretted, "Do you have a family, Mr. Dawson? Wife? Husband? Kids?"
I looked into the dark liquid of my drink and recalled the basic information of the character I was portraying, remembering it within an instant, "No wife, she died a couple years ago," I said setting the drink down, "I have one daughter, Annabella, a lovely girl, looks a lot like her mother...she's already off to college getting her medical degree...she always wanted to be a doctor." I faked a laugh and smile, "She used to always to play doctor on the dog and try to take care of us when we were sick, or when she thought we were sick. She was truly a caring girl, she would never hurt a fly...though me and Kelly, my wife, always thought she wouldn't keep at being a doctor because she was so afraid of needles...we were pleasantly surprised when she did so and oh so very proud of her." I looked up at Jason who had a small half smile on his face.
"I am terribly sorry about your wife Mr. Dawson." he said after a moment of silence, "And give your daughter my congratulations and best wishes."
I nodded, "I will. Now Back to you Mr. Terry, what time do you want me at the house or do you need some time to think about it and discuss it with your family?"
"I will have to discuss it with my wife and I will text you when we come to a decision." He stood up and extended a hand towards me, "It was a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Dawson, really...I hope that my wife agrees to allow you to be our bodyguard as I would love to have more talks with you."
I took his hand, "Of course."
I watched as he left the small cafe and enter his car. I waited until he drove off before pulling out my cell phone and dialing that cell number of my boss. The phone rung four times before the scratchy voice of a fifty-year-old man came over the speakers, "Is it done?" he asked
"Yes," I said standing to leave the cafe, "He fell for the story hook, line, and sinker." I pause for a moment pushing open the exit door and heading towards the black Toyota in the far back row of the parking lot, "He's quite the family man, that's all he talked about."
"Yes, he loves his family very much, but don't let that fool you he has very classified information of ours that if it gets leaked out could destroy us. Don't show him any compassion."
I climbed into the car and started it, "How can I when I don't have any to give sir?"
The line was quiet for a moment before he spoke again, "You have compassion Drake, yours in just compressed." he said before he hung up.
I looked at the phone for a moment before throwing it into the passenger seat next to me. I didn't care what he thought, I no compassion, no emotion whatsoever. So what was the feeling that was beginning to well up in my stomach and caused my entire body to shiver?
