The air was thick with smoke, making it ever harder to breathe, my lungs burned trying to get a breathe of fresh air. My footsteps echoed through the silent morning. I walk at an even pace, with no reason to rush to the bus stop, I took in the beauty of the morning, the mountains with their halos of fire. As I approached the bus stop I check the time, 7:10 am, right on time as always. I stand by the long blue line on the sidewalk, right where I stood every morning, and waited I had seven minutes until the bus will arrive. I was the first one there, no surprize there, I hate being late so I try to be at least five minuites early to everything. The first person to join me at the bus stop was Briant, a eleventh grader, I blushed recalling the day before.
The day before - The bus was packed three to a seat no room to move, barely room to breath. I sat next to someone I didn't know because my friend was busy with her other commitments. I hated when she had to go to marching band, leaving me alone on the bus surrounded with people who ignored me. The seat I had sat on only had two people, and I was grateful for the space between us. The bus started inching forward almost ready to start on our journey home, and then stopped the door opened allowing another student on.Ben looked around, and sighed, no room, he started towards the door and stopped spotting room right next to me. He stopped next to my seat,
“Can I sit here?”
I nod sliding over till I was pressed against Brandon, the boy I had shared my seat with, he took a seat and we made our way down the road towards our homes. We shared the ride in an embarrassed silence, Brandon stared out the window and I stared at him while Ben chatted with his friends. I tried to read Brandon’s expression looking for any indication he was just as embarrassed as I was that our bodies were touching, nothing. I stare out the windows waiting for the ride to be over, at the first stop I looked at Brandon wondering if he would tell me his stop was next, I knew this but I still wanted to make sure. He looked at me and it was like he knew what i was about to say before I did.
“I get off at the next stop” he pointed to the next stop
“Same” I looked down cheeks glowing a bright pink
The bus emptied out there were only a few people scattered throughout the bus. The bus started up again and we drove to the next stop. I picked up my backpack and exited the bus thanking the bus drive and I walked to my house in silence processing what had just happened.
I was pulled into the present and he smiled a warm friendly smile, it was slightly lopsided, favoring the right side of his mouth. His normally wild black hair was pushed out of his eyes his hands casually in his pockets. I smiled back, the sight of him filling me with a jittery warm feeling.
“Crazy isn't it,” he nodded towards the mountains completely unconcerned of the dangers the fire had presented. “that they let it get that bad. If I had known it would turn into this I would have taken a bucket of water and put it out myself.”
“Yeah, it is crazy” I stared into his deep green eyes mesmerized with the intricate design his eyes held, I was pulled out of my daze as the bus stoped in front of us. Time to go to school.
