That night everyone slept in the apartment. Once it had been a few hours and I was sure no one was awake anymore I slowly stood up, letting the fuzzy blanket fall off of me and onto the couch. I didn’t need to turn on the lights, the city was bright enough that the large windows was enough to let in the light.
I was leaving. These people, they seemed to think they had some sort of moral reason for keeping me here. All I have to say to that, is what a load of bulshit. They’re the reason I’m in this mess anyway, if anything they’re trying to ‘protect me’ out of gilt. I slowly and as quietly as possible made my way to the door. I wasn’t about to just open it though, I knew that they had this thing wired with a shitload of teck so I got my phone out and used there AC controller as my way into there very protected network. Once you gain access to one electronic thing, since they’re all on the same network, you can use it as your way into the more protected things. I make sure to disarm the alarm, a small beep sound can be hard coming from a hidden location as I succeed.
Just as I open the door and turn around to close it behind me, I see Steve standing in the apartment right at the door. I froze in place, the thumping of my heart in my chest loud in my ears. It takes alot to surprise me, but they definitely had succeeded. They hadn’t made a single sound, it was like they teleported there. They didn’t move, or say anything, just watched, no expression to be seen. That may have just been because it was dark… but I had a feeling that wasn’t the case. I somehow got my body to start working again and my hand finally moved to close the door.
As soon as the click of the door shutting was heard I just started running. I bursted through the door of the building and onto the quiet streets of the night. The only thing that could be heard was the sound of my converse hitting hard against the sidewalk, my raspy gasps echoing along with it. I’ve never been the athletic type so it didn’t take long before my throat was dry and breathing hurt. Once I finally felt I was far enough, or in reality once I felt like I would keel over and die if I tried to continue running, I stopped. My hands were on my knees as all the muscles in my legs were on fire and my throat was drier than an unlubed asshole. Fuck me. I need to exercise more.
As I walked I flipped the hood of my hoodie up. The night was cold enough that I could see my breath, and putting my hands in my pockets felt necessary. I probably looked like I was going to rob someone with this look. I needed to keep my face as hidden as possible though, so I had to make due with what I had.
I saw an ATM coming up ahead and saw that as a good opportunity. I was starting to get into the brighter part of the city, the neon lights and ads directed at women’s insecurities and men’s heterosexuality made that evident. This also meant more people thought, I was starting to enter the heart of the city’s nightlife. I’d have to be quick about getting the money. Incase you haven't guessed yet, I don’t exactly plan on taking money out of my account. If I did that anyone monitoring me, like the police, or Declan and the other two, would easily be able to tell where I was. So, I had to get money a different way.
I went up to the machine and discreetly put my phone next to the keypad, I had a program already set up for this kind of thing. Not that I did this often since I made enough money and was never really the money hungry kind, definitely didn’t get that from my parents. It was just something I had made just in case. Ok maybe I’m lying, I just like coding shit that I shouldn't be coding, which in hindsight might be what got me in this situation in the first place. On the other hand it could be my first theory which is just cops suck and I should go outside less.
I ran the code and watched the familiar black screen and green text light up. There was something just so satisfying about watching a code you wrote run and execute the way you intended it to. After a few seconds the machine opened up and spit out the amount I had entered into the code. I didn’t go crazy, a few hundred should get me some extra clothes, food and a place to sleep for the night. I just took what I needed. I finished and shoved the money into my pocket along with my phone. Just as I was walking away though I felt my phone vibrate. I took it out and looked at it, seeing a text from an unknown number. It said only one thing.
I see you.
