I was deep in thought about my plan and what sort of weapons might be available in the armory. If I could just find something to use against it, this could all be over quickly. Once it’s over I can try to figure out if I’ve missed anything significant while I was dead and try to get everything back on track. I wasn’t planning to have vacation until the end of January, am I even going to get back on schedule in time? What if I-
“Hey.” A ghostly voice rang out behind me causing me to twitch slightly.
Within that moment the book I was holding in my hand phased halfway through it. “Wha?”
“Don’t startle me!” I snapped both in tone and with the book as I pried it from my hand.
“Your sister is scary…” The ghost girl, now mentally known as GG, stated in a rather defeated tone.
“I know.” I replied opening the book back to the page I was on. GG hovered over my shoulder “I think I have a solution to your problem.” She got closer, much closer. Ghost or whatever she was it didn’t make the claustrophobic feeling any different. “DO you mind?”
“But it’s cold, I wasn’t expecting this dimension to be so cold.” She almost whined but seemed to catch herself.
“Well it is winter… As far as I’m aware…” I let out a sigh and took off my lab coat carefully placing it over her shoulders. She seemed a little confused by the gesture but didn’t seem to mind. “Anyhow, the source of this issue is most likely on the surface.”
“The surface of what?” She asked, but I wasn’t exactly sure how to clarify.
“You’ll see.” Just showing what I meant was probably easier in this case. I motioned for her to follow as I began to lead the way to the tower.
It was not long before GG’s curiosity leaked out, “Where is this surface?”
“Don’t be too impatient, it’s still a long way from here” I warned her, “We are about 200 stories under ground, maybe more, I don’t really know.” As we finally reached the tower I let her in on the worst part. “We have to go all the way up.”
“Do we really?” She gave me a look that I could only interpret as being ‘beyond tired of being in our dimension’ and I don’t think anyone would blame her. Despite how bored she must be she remained silent for the entirety of our climb through the lower floors.
When we finally reached one of the first elevators of the many we were about to experience this evening I began thinking out loud, “I honestly can’t remember the last time I was here.” I swiped my card through the scanner and the door opened swiftly. “At least this elevator still works. Although I’m sure this doesn’t affect you at all.”
“Not even remotely.” GG replied. It sure must be nice to be a celestial being and not have to think about the physical demands of having a body. In all honesty, I’m a bit envious of that.
“Um…” Once we got off the elevator it took me a little bit to register where we were. “this way.” I said taking a quick glance at the map on the wall just to make sure. “We’ve got to go to the center area before we can go up, any farther.”
At this point I knew I was speaking more to myself than I was to her, but right now anything would be good to help pass the time. “This place was meant to hold a lot of people. So it’s ridiculously huge. Some idiot decided it would be a good idea to make plans for an underground facility, little did they know it would actually be useful. With the technology we had at the time, this place was built in a matter of months. By the time the distortion began wreaking havoc, almost an entire country was living down here practically safe from harm.”
As we got closer I knew the air was about to get too unbearable, so I pulled out my gas mask and quickly fitted it to my face “Eventually we found this place under us, nearly three times as big as the facility. As we expanded there, the primary root of the Facility was abandoned. Entirely. Not only that but with this new territory, attempts at reclaiming what was left of the surface stopped altogether.” As soon as I was done making adjustments to my equipment I shook my head to make sure nothing would come loose. “Alright, let’s go.”
