Frightening Fragments

Starlight

Starlight

Oct 12, 2018

The prisoner sat in a wooden room, rocking back and forth with the ship. She held her knees to her chin and sighed. She couldn't remember the last time she saw the sun, or another person. She would have thought that the pirates had probably had forgotten that she had been down there if it weren't for the small meals she had been provided each day.

A thud vibrated throughout the brig, and she looked up. She wondered if one of the pirates had come down, possibly drunk. However, there was no one there other than herself.

Another thud came, and this one was stronger. It even broke the wood near the cell door. Another thud, breaking the wood and metal binding. The door swung free and she stood. She wobbled slightly, but used the walls to steady her.

As she climbed the stairs, she could see pirates frozen in some sort of trance. She waved her hand in front of their faces, but there was no response. Smiling, she danced around them.

After a moment, the crew walked to one side of the ship. She looked around and followed, wondering what was going on. In the water below her she could see blue women with long grey aquatic tails.

She had read about these creatures before her time on the ship, and she remembered that they were dangerous. Apparently, their song was intoxicating and entrancing. Looking around, she noticed that the men were flinging themselves from the ship toward the blue women.

She tried to grab the man closest to her and prevent him from jumping, but he ignored her. Instead, the shirt she held ripped as he fell into the sea and get jumped by a slightly more green woman with long navy hair.

As the men jumped and the women disappeared into the deep with them, she found herself alone on a large ship. She paced, realizing that she was stranded on a vessel she had no idea how to direct it.

She looked across the sea, seeing the stars reflecting off the water. It was a calm night, once the hunt was over. With a sigh, she was glad that she wasn't able to hear the murderous song of the sirens.

Turning around, she found another aquatic woman on the deck of the ship. However, she didn't have a tail. She had two long legs that matched her blue skin and white hair. The siren walked toward the former prisoner quietly, curiously.

The prisoner shook her head, taking a step back against the ship wall. The siren reached out and touched her cheek, her face calm and almost friendly. The prisoner touched her hand on her cheek and offered a small smile.

The prisoner waited for an attack, but it never came. The siren just stared, as if she was waiting for something. The prisoner touched the siren's cheek, making her smile. A prick on her neck caused the prisoner to recoil away from the siren.

The prisoner stared at the siren in shock, but then noticed her eyesight improved significantly. The darkness was easier to discern as if she had night vision. The siren calmly reached out to the prisoner, helping her up.

As she went to push the siren away, the prisoner saw her skin start to change and itch. Her skin turned a pale green with blue flecks and the prisoner stared in shock. She stood immediately as he grabbed at her now navy hair. The siren grabbed her arm and offered a kind smile.

The siren reached out to the prisoner again, who flinched but didn't move away. As the siren ran her fingers down her neck, the prisoner could feel skin flaps move on her neck. She had gills, just like the siren before her.

The siren grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the edge. The prisoner bit her lip, feeling her new sharp fangs instead of the teeth she remembered. Although the blood still tasted the same.

The siren let go of the prisoner and jumped into the water. As she resurfaced, she looked up at her newest sister and pointed to her newly transformed indigo tail. The former prisoner looked back on the empty ship and smiled.

She dived into the sea, the cold water feeling the wonderful across her skin. As she went to kick, she jerked in the water. She looked down to see a fully formed blue shark fin and she smiled.

The former prisoner swam over to the white haired siren, who grinned widely. The new siren smiled back before the siren guided her back to the rest of the sirens, who waited in the red murky under the starlight.
