“Hey Karen, you want some breakfast?” I walked into the living room to see her sitting up on the couch with the news on TV. I shook her to try to get her attention. She pointed at the screen. “We are told that more than 50 people have become infected with the flu. Everyone in the Cherry Grove neighborhood area has been advised to stay inside.” I stood there confused as to how this happened when only one of the kids at the school were infected. Is this shit airborne now… just how? “The nurse was found in the school yesterday hiding in an empty classroom and was taken to her home to see her family.” The question I thought of was answered. “Wait so they just LET her go home not realizing she was covered in blood!?” Karen looked at me more in shock than I was in hearing this new information. “She must not have appeared bitten or maybe…” She stopped realizing the same thing as me. “Her symptoms were not as advanced as the kid.” We both said. It must take time for the “flu” to even react to the body or be accepted. This may be more troublesome than what they think. “So, what we just stay in this apartment until they figure something out?” I asked. Karen shrugged while I flopped down on the couch. Hours went by with no updates from the news. Karen was passed out but before I could close my eyes I heard a knock on my door. “Ugh now who can that be?” I said grunting while getting up. I opened the door to see Chris bent over almost out of breath. I lead him inside grabbing him a drink of water. He swallowed the water and threw the glass cup in the sink. Karen woke up to the sound of the glass shattering in the sink. “Huh, what was- wait Chris what are you even doing here?” She asked not to happy with his presence. “No time to even explain but we need to leave now.” He said grabbing my hand trying to drag me out. I hit his hand to let me go. I wanted to know why he was in such a hurry to leave only to hear people screaming outside. We all ran to the windows to see people running from something. Whatever they were running from appeared to be scary enough to them. We looked at each other, he pointed towards the door, and we ran outside. We were met with people running past us until Chris tapped my shoulder to point to an alleyway. Getting away from the crowd, he led us to a house boarded up that was not too far from the neighborhood. Inside the place had a more rugged look to it. The couch was the only thing that looked remotely brand new compared to everything else. He had boxes of what seemed like food stacked in one corner with weapons next to them. “Ok Chris is this a bunker of some sort because I want to know why you even brought us here with this stuff?” I pointed at his chest and to the contents in this room. He just walked past me going upstairs only coming down a few minutes later with a laptop. He sat down on the desk turning the laptop on to show me a bunch of tabs open. “See this is not some ordinary flu,” he said switching between articles and documents, “The magnitude of this so-called flu is just as bad as a zombie virus.” I knew it was not some flu but to even say we are in a zombie apocalypse right now is wild. “So, what is this event going to turn into that show “The Walking Dead?” Chris and I just looked at her. I know she tried to make a joke, but it came out poorly. She just shrugged and walked to the couch. Taking a more extensive look at the contents on the laptop. One file stood out to me saying how this virus could possibly not be cured. “Ok let me get this straight, the flu is some type of mega virus that cannot be cured?” I said pointing at the file I found from the laptop. “As of this moment, it can’t be cured but maybe there are possibilities of people who may be immune or just one person. If we can find that person we can take their blood to create a vaccine.” “And what if the body rejects the vaccine?” He looked at me realizing what I just said. “There has to be a cure, or the military could just blow up this town because right now it has only started here.” He said pointing to a map. “Are there any safe camps we can go to and maybe stay there for better safety?” I inquired. He told me there was one, but we would have to make it to the other side of town. “Well it is better than staying in this dirty place.” Karen insisted. We both agreed thinking this plan would be a smart one. We each got a backpack, put some food and water in them, and took a weapon to defend ourselves with. I wanted to ask why he even had so many weapons, but the main concern was getting to the military safely. “We can take the truck seeing as the street is clear now.” We went outside to the truck putting our stuff in the back. “Hopefully we have enough gas to get to our destination.” “We are in the middle of an apocalypse we can get as much gas as we want to now.” Karen was right. We could just get the gas without paying and this could be the only good thing to come out of all this mayhem.
