Author's note
Thanks for sticking with me through Maya's story!
Seeing everybody's interest makes me giddy. Your support helps me towards my dream of becoming a professional writer ❤ But more than that, I'm so glad people have enjoyed this.
I wrote the beginning of this for a creative writing class. Our professor strongly advised us to avoid "genre" fiction—AKA anything fun. So I ignored that advice and wrote fantasy and sci-fi the whole semester. He eventually came around.
A couple years later, I came back to it. I wanted to explore this pivotal moment where everything in Maya's life is completely turned around. That's the story you see here.
You may still have questions—about Maya's parents, her future, or the researchers. I've been wondering about these things myself, so you may eventually see me write a sequel. I'd love to hear what your theories are and what you'd like to find out!
My next project, Dreams of Scale and Bone, is quite a bit longer—about novella length, if all goes as planned. I'm also considering participating in Tapas's Writer's Camp this winter, but that may be a little too ambitious, haha. We'll see.
Dreams of Scale and Bone is the story of Drika, a college student in a fantasy world who uncovers a conspiracy between her school, the prince, and a mysterious force with a taste for human blood. It contains strong Dutch and Japanese influences with a steampunk-y flare. It's also my first attempt at writing a romantic relationship, so I'm nervous to hear what people think. Oh! And there are sea monsters.
At the time this goes up, the first episode should already be posted. See you there!
