"Oh my God!"
"What have I done?!"
I strained to open my eyes in the bright light and my hands immediately flew to shield my ears from the blaring horn from the car. I looked up and Austin was a few feet from me, sitting with his hands wrapped around his legs, rocking back and forth.
The deafening noise was coming from the other car. I got off the ground and wobbled towards it. I could barely walk. My vision was a bit blurry and my head was on the verge of exploding. My world started spinning when I caught sight of the passenger in the other car.
"Good lord," I gasped. "AUSTIN!! Call 911!!" I yelled at him. I stepped back so fast I nearly tripped.
"Austin!" What in God's name was he doing? I glanced over towards him and he was now staring right at me. "Call 911!! What are you staring at!!"
"Sir, can you hear me?" I asked, approaching the passenger. Just then, a car screeched to a stop beside us.
"Oh my!" The young man gasped and he quickly reached for his phone. "911... there's an accident on Cassandra Street. It's really, really bad."
The look on his face sent chills through me. I followed his gaze as he turned to face Austin.
"Sir, are you alright?" He asked, walking past me.
"NO NO NO NO Noooooo!!! What have I done!!! Lola!!" Austin screamed.
"I'm fine! I'm over here," I said, rushing to his side. I reached for his arm and my hand passed through. Holy fuck! I reach for it again and nothing.
I'm looking at him and so is he, but his gaze is distant. I follow it and stumble back.
There I am, in the car. What am I doing there!? Why is my neck askew! Oh, God!
"I'm so sorry Lola!!!" He keeps screaming and crying at the top of his lungs.
"Sir, you need to calm down. The ambulance is on its way," says the young man.
"What is going on? Austin...I'm over here!" I yell, reaching for his hand. It passes through again. "WHAT IS GOING ON!!!!"
I reach for him one more time as he falls to the ground in tears. I try to comfort him and that's when it happens; the switch. I felt a hand land on my shoulder and then everything grew quiet as if someone turned down the volume of a blaring television.
"Lola..."
I could see Austin being comforted and still hear his muffled cries as the ambulance approached. I reached for him and my hands grabbed at nothing even though I was in arm's reach.
Austin, I'm here... why can't you see me?
"LOLITA SANDERS!" A hiccup escaped my lips and I quickly turned around to face my caller.
"Follow me, now." He said coldly, as he turned and walked away. I turned away from him and moved towards Austin.
"Don't make this harder than it should!" He yelled. "You're dead. There's nothing else for you back there."
