Kenji wakes up in a hospital bed looking around his surroundings curiously. No one is around him as he scans the area for any signs of activity. A small piece of paper sits on the nearby counter as Kenji reaches out and grabs it.
“Dear Idiot, since you know where the hanger is so I don’t need to be around to guide you around like a child. Take care of yourself while I research our foes to narrow down our next opponent, so don’t worry, take care of yourself.” Kenji reads.
He puts the letter down and sighs loudly. “Damn it all,” Kenji says slightly annoyed. “I’m thirsty.”
Kenji forces himself out of bed and walks through the halls towards the elevator. There a line of vending machines sits full of drinks as Kenji walks towards it curiously. He stares at each of the machines trying to discern what might make the most satisfying drink.
“I kind of want cola,” Kenji says to himself.
“Cola?” A voice says behind him.
A young girl with long black hair stands behind him with an oddly calm expression on her face. Her clothes as dark as her hair stand out as Kenji stares at her. She walks forward and stares at Kenji in the eyes as he steps back nervously.
“Right cola, have you never had any?”
“No. If I understand cola is only carbonated and flavored drink, quite an odd concoction.” She says staring at the vending machines. “Such an odd combination would certainly not be refreshing.”
She stares at the machines and nudges Kenji as he sighs loudly. “Alright fine, here I’ll get you some!”
He walks over to the machine and pulls out two coins before ordering two drinks from the machine. Two cans roll out and he takes both handing one over towards the odd girl. She stares at the can and Kenji opens it showing her and she mimics the movements. As he watches Kenji drink, she copies him again and drinks from the can.
“Odd.” She says as she drinks the cola.
“Odd?”
“It’s actually quite tasty, but it is still only a liquid.” She says.
Kenji stares at her. “Um, what’s your name?”
“Name? Oh, a distinction?” She asks confused.
Kenji tilts his head. “Um, do you not have one?”
“From your understanding no.” She says turning away.
“Well, I’ll just call you Alice,” Kenji says happily.
The newly named Alice tilts her head in confusion. “Alice? Why?”
“No real reason, I just want to call you something and leaving you just girl feels rude,” Kenji says.
“Well I will accept this name for now, but Kenji, why are you here?” She asks curiously.
“You know my name?”
“Of course.”
“Well I guess I was on TV recently, it’s kind of exciting to be a celebrity now,” Kenji says happily.
She stares at him. “Do you remember?”
“What? What about my memories?” Kenji asks.
“I’ll assume that is a no, your memories are still gone, it’s quite a shame.” She says reaching her hand out towards Kenji. “Well I will still make use of you, you’ll make a perfect test subject.”
“What? What do you mean by test?” Kenji asks as a weird voice echoes into his mind. “What’s going on?”
Kenji stares ahead and sees a vast void of nothingness as Alice’s visage seems to fade from his eyes.
A few moments later a nurse stands over Kenji as he lies on the floor drooling as he snaps awake.
“Are you okay?” The nurse asks concerned. “You shouldn’t have moved if you were still feeling ill, if you need anything then we will get it for you.”
Kenji forces himself up. “I’m sorry, I’m….” Kenji holds his head and looks around. “I don’t know why I’m here?”
“Sleepwalking? That wasn’t a symptom before?”
“No, I wanted a drink, and I came out here, but I fell over and I don’t remember what happened,” Kenji says. “Maybe I just need to rest a bit more.”
“That’s good, but please don’t leave your room unless you absolutely need to. It’s already difficult since you ran out away last time please don’t try to leave early again.”
Kenji walks down the hallway holding his head making his way back to his room. “Sorry, I’ll go lay down for a bit.”
As Kenji walks away Alice stands at the other end of the hallway holding out a phone as she quickly dials a number.
“The test has begun, we will observe him and then work on the others.” She says with a blank expression on her face. “Let’s begin phase one.”
