It was normal for either him or her to receive offers from people, promising to make their lives better by helping them off the streets after they have witnessed their skill with the saxophone. But there was a time, a couple of months ago, that The Jazz Man almost accepted. An older woman wearing a green suit, who spoke in Louin, offered him a chance to work other musicians in their upcoming show, down in Harlem Theater, one of the biggest venues any musician could play in.
The Jazz Man told her that the woman had something in her eye. It was a sparkle of truth that told him her intentions were pure. But the only reason why he denied the offer was because of her. She was like his daughter and she knew it. He told her, one afternoon, that he had lost the opportunity of raising his little girl because he fell to the temptation of Eleven- the street drug that’s been running ramped for decades now. And he didn’t want to give up the chance of making things right with her.
“What did you say?” he curiously asked.
[I said no! I’m not going to trust someone I barely even know. Besides, it would be dangerous to just accept something like that. But despite saying no, he still gave me his card.]
She dug her hand into her coat pocket and pulled out the card.
[Here.] She handed him the card.
The Jazz Man removed his sunglasses, revealing blood red eyes that glossed underneath the light. A silver bullet train pulled up and a man on the intercom spoke as he smiled.
“Attention all passengers, the train is about to stop. Please exit and enter the train in an orderly manner. I repeat…”
The passengers that stood around began to pile into the train and those who wanted out pushed their way out. The Jazz Man’s eyes became filled with bliss and he smiled a soft grin. One that she has never seen him to before.
“My child...” He spoke tenderly, holding up the card, “This isn’t just some man. This is Ares Winter.”
[What about it?] She threw up her hands and raised her eyebrows.
“He is the grandson of George Anthos Winter, the current President of the University of Sound! Oh child! You might have hit it big!” his smile grew bigger but she was still confused and he read it.
“I know you are very confused, but trust me, this is good.” He held the card up to his face, “This is like…Here, I will put it in your understanding.”
He swallowed, “With this card, you…can have a future. It will open many many doors for you so that you do not have to run away and hide anymore. A future without fear, something that we might never have a chance to experience. Look around, child.”
His red eyes darted off and hers followed, “What do you see? A subway filled with Humans that give us attention if we ask for it through an instrument. If we don’t have an instrument, we are nothing and we will die as nothing. This is your chance to change all of that. To become a proper pianist and show the world your beautiful talent! What do you say, my child?”
