All the lights were off at his home when he got home, meaning both his wife and house-guest had dozed off in their respective beds for the night. Treading slowly and carefully so not to wake either of them, Kurym made his way to the bathroom to have a shower, hopefully to remove all traces of the long night. As the door to the shower clicked shut, Jolark opened his eyes fully and sat up slowly. The sound of the front door closing and the attempted quiet footsteps from the large owner of the house, had awoken him since he was a light sleeper, always was on the road. He never slept soundly away from his home but especially during nights here. Jolark had tried to tell himself it was the heat of Usheb Valley that stole his slumber but he knew otherwise as to why. Stifling a yawn, Jolark listened as the shower was switched off and he heard movement in the small room to his left. Not wanting to get into anything tonight, the dark-haired man lay back down and pretended to be asleep. His travelling companion Ulo was sleeping on the floor nearby, completely oblivious to anything in the world, only his dreams mattered and he was about to become the champion of an event of catching field fish. Kurym opened the door to the living room and made his way through to his bedroom to sleep, a long and beautiful sleep. Jolark opened his eyes as he listened to his friend in the dark, staring at nothing in particular until his eye caught Ulo twitching from dreams.
"Tomorrow," Jolark whispered and closed his eyes to try and get a little more sleep, "we're moving on."
Exhaling deeply, the weary man rolled onto his side and forced himself to sleep.
"You are a greedy boy this morning, aren't you?"
Clio teased the little Ulo at the breakfast table on the balcony. She always had her morning snack on the stone terrace outside the house and usually alone as her husband didn't love the blinding sun too early. However, this morning she had company with her small friend from years ago. He never seemed to age, certainly not as fast as other tynko and their numbers were getting fewer and fewer, thanks to the war.
"Okay, one more... I don't have many to spare, Ulo."
Barking and wagging his tail, Ulo waited patiently for the metallic snack being lowered down to him by his original master. Before travelling with Jolark, mostly for company, Ulo had been saved by Clio during the battle that tore his home apart. All of his family, not all the same species as himself, had been destroyed by a strange man that had invaded their safety. He had been familiar but not once had Ulo managed to find the memory in his system to recognise who it was. Even if he had been able to, he wouldn't be able to tell anyone since his vocal chip had been torn out by the same person. Tynko did not always talk, it was a special function for their respective masters to access memory banks or security features in their system. Originally designed as ornamental cameras, tynko had evolved over time after their creator decided to give them movement and thought. Being able to think individually, the larger tynko; now extinct, had moved a great migration of their kind to the technological city beyond the mountains where they spent their long lives. One of the elders, Enph, a large tynko with a strange nose, studied science throughout his life, which for a tynko was a very long time. Learning about their kind and working on how to improve them or fix them. He was seen as their strongest and most intelligent, all the smaller tynko looked up to him. Especially after their creator died.
"Good boy," Clio smiled at the little metallic dog and went back to her meal, "good boy."
Ulo trotted into the house, jumping over the reclining Jolark but something in his system told him to stop and turn back to his friend. Sitting next to the sad looking man, Ulo tilted his head at him and tried to catch his eye. It was unlike Jolark to look this way, he was usually smiling and laughing. His current state worried Ulo so he did the only thing he could to try and get attention. Jumping lightly on his little paws, Ulo clambered up Jolark's stomach and chest until his little metallic face was next to the pout.
"Hey buddy..."
Ulo nuzzled his snout next to Jolark's chin in response. He hated not being able to talk anymore, being reduced to a silent being after being able to bark and speak... Ulo was waiting for the day he would meet his old master again.
Holding her to him tightly, Kurym breathed loudly on her ear that he next closed his teeth down onto carefully. He smiled as she moaned into the air around them in the bedroom at his advances and how much she enjoyed their love-making. Their game was drawing to a close and probably just in time as their guest was heard outside on the stairs with the little one. Growling at her softly, Kurym released his grip on her waist and smiled as he watched her stand and retrieve her outfit that had been discarded earlier. Sitting up in the bed, the flimsy sheet barely covering his lower torso, Kurym lit a cigarette and watched his Clio get dressed, talking to her as she spoke to him in hushed tones about what they had just done. He couldn't help himself around her, she was like a tonic. She made him so happy, in the throws of passion or sitting somewhere with her. He was so thankful to have her after that awful war, so thankful nothing had happened to her. So relieved that she was unscarred unlike himself... Frowning a little as he exhaled smoke through his nose, Kurym remembered the day she had left to go to Gyhn and how frightened they had both been. How her eyes had looked that morning, full of fear and tears.
"Kurym?"
Clio looked at his face, his frown and then at the cigarette not being smoked.
"Baby?" Crawling onto the bed again, Clio rejoined her husband and kissed his nose softly. "It's okay, you're safe. I'm safe. We're safe, together." She kissed him again on the forehead, his scarred eyelid and down to his mouth. Kneeling next to him, Clio cradled his face and repeated what she had just said. She smiled when she felt his hand on her thigh, brushing her skin with his fingers. Looking at his beautiful gold eye, Clio leaned in and kissed him firmly, smiling inside as he returned the affection with his tongue next to hers. The kiss broke quietly, Kurym looking at his wife deeply and a smile wandering across his mouth again.
"I love you."
She smiled back at him and nodded as she removed the cigarette from his hand and threw it in a nearby sink. He laughed softly, suspecting where this might be going and picked her up so she was sat on his stomach.
"I love you too." He watched her mouth dance as she said it back to him. Being quick, Kurym held her waist with both hands and flipped her onto the bed gently so she was lying on her back, now underneath his frame. He looked at her expression, moved closer to kiss his best friend and began to make her feel great. Again.
