There are a few things you need to know about Liam and the world I'll be living in for the rest of my life. In-between is the place where the dead come when they are being prepared to integrate into their zones. There is no one else apart from your Grim Reaper and two chairs. It's quiet and plain colored; neither white nor black. The zones are based on your spirit's level. I have no idea how these are ranked as I am still wallowing in sadness and waiting for Liam to get back from his board meeting.
Liam is peculiar. I always thought Grim Reapers were supposed to be old but he does not look a day over thirty. He's about 5'11, short dark hair, blue eyes, and pale skin. He is always dressed in this three-piece navy-blue suit and has the meanest smirk on his face. If he smiled more genuinely, I'd hate him a bit less.
Ever since he started drilling me in preparation for the world ahead, so he said, I felt the need to rebel. Don't get me wrong, I did listen, very attentively for that matter since my life depends on it. As we neared the end, I asked him if I could find out how I really died and why. The look on his face said it all. Before he could respond, he has whisked away for the meeting.
"Took you long enough," I said, sensing him behind me.
"You're a puzzle," He replied. I turned around to face him and caught him smiling. Not his evil smirk, an actual smile! My heart nearly melted! "Like an open book with blank pages."
"Why do you say that?" I asked, crossing my legs on the chair.
"Every soul that has passed through me feared me," Liam said. "None ever answered back."
"I guess it's your lucky day," I said, winking.
"Don't do that," he shot back.
"What?" I asked, winking again.
Lola, you need to chill. He's the death angel and pretty worked up at the moment about something.
Seconds later, he was in my face. His blue eyes piercing mine with their cold fire.
"Don't toy with me, Lolita. I am not the kind of reaper anyone messes with," Liam said, through his teeth.
"Here's the thing, Liam, I am not at all scared of you and the reason is simple, you said there are worse things than death, right? Well, mine is this sinking feeling that I wasn't supposed to die. That there is a lot I need to know about that day. Drill me all you want, I will find out everything about my death." I replied, a tear escaping my eye.
"There's bravery and then there's plain stupidity," he replied, moving away and taking his seat. "You're leaving for your zone tomorrow, your chances of investigating and memories will be lost forever."
"Not unless you help me," I said, sitting up straight.
"Why in hade's name will I help you?" He shot back, lightning fast as though I'd uttered absolute profanity.
"You have nothing to lose. I can see it in your eyes... you love playing games and I intrigue you. You want me to forget all about my accident but sit back and hope I keep some of my memories. I'll offer you a deal," I replied, very calmly.
"There's nothing you can offer me!"
"There is and I bet you already have something in mind," I rebutted. "Help me find out all about my accident and you can have that one wish that's dancing in your mind.
"How sure am I you won't go against your word?"
"As you said, there is nothing left for me back there," I replied, getting up from my seat. "All I want is the truth and I'll happily move on. Deal?" I stretched out my hand for him to shake.
"Deal."
He got up and shook my hand, his blue eyes twinkling. I had no idea what I'd just done but there was no turning back.
