Kathy
I made myself a small routine in my final week of freedom before school started. I started with a light work out in my room in the morning, then hung out with Meaghan in the afternoon (she actually turned out to be really nice), and then I would go for a run in the evening. Once that was done and I had a meal with my billet family, I would spend the rest of the night online with Alex before I went to bed.
Alex: so you start at your new school tomorrow?
Kathy: yeah, im not sure what to make of it though
Alex: im sure youll do fine
Kathy: well meaghan said shed show me around so i wont be alone
Alex: good
Alex: my parents are yelling at me to get some sleep so ill ttyl <3
Kathy: k, love you! xo
Alex: love you too kathy
I shut my laptop slowly. Tomorrow was going to be very interesting.
After waking up next morning, I decided to go for a nice long run, thinking I would need to burn off my extra nervousness as well as build up some adrenaline to help me get through the day. Getting back in the house, I took a hot shower, trying not to think about the challenge that would be a new high school. Once I got out, I threw on track pants over a pair spandex shorts rolling down the top of my pants, so they sat low on my hips, and put on my boyfriend’s favourite top. Well, at least the top he likes the best on me. I then went upstairs and found Meaghan and Tom having breakfast.
Meaghan cocked an eyebrow at my outfit and said, “First day of school and you don’t think twice about what you’re going to wear, literally just wear the exact same thing you would wear at home…” She shook her head with a smile, “trust Kathy to be the one girl who thinks like that.”
I smiled, “We had uniforms back at my old school, so I got in the habit of throwing anything on in the morning and not thinking about what I was going to wear.”
Meaghan laughed.
Tom rolled his eyes at me. He then looked me up and down and said, “You looked better without the shirt, but I guess the shirt is still kind of cute.”
I blushed in embarrassment while Meaghan smacked him on the head. This made me smile because they were just like my brothers and me at home.
I ate my breakfast quickly and went to put my workout things into my duffel bag. Mr. McGregor told me that I would have access to the work out facilities at the high school and I intended to full advantage of the opportunity.
What felt like way too soon, we all went out the door and started walking to school. As we were on our way there, I realized that it was warmer out as I though, so all I could think about was changing into a pair of shorts that I was sure I had stored in my duffel bag when I got to school so I didn’t die of heat.
When we finally got to school, I took one look at the building and felt the need to turn and run. The building was at least twice the size of my old high school and had at probably three times the number of people. If I had been by myself, I probably would have turned and ran, but because I was with other people, I swallowed hard and tried not to look as terrified as I felt. Didn’t really want to look like the complete wimp that I felt like.
Meaghan turned to me and said, “Come on, I’ll show you around.”
Taking a deep, calming breath I shouldered my duffel bag a little higher, feeling the comforting weight of my running shoes made me a little more comfortable. Just barely though. With a deep breath, I followed Meaghan into my new school.
We didn’t take any detours and went straight to the office to get my schedule. The principal smiled at me and said, “So here is the young protégé that Mr. McGregor told us about. I trust you will help out hockey team make the finals.”
I smiled and said, “That’s the plan.”
Meaghan and I then turned and found our way to our home room class. We looked at my schedule and discovered that we had only one class together for the entire day.
My schedule was:
English
Geometry
Biology
Art
While Meaghan had:
English
History
Geometry
Biology
Meaghan shrugged as we look at our morning schedules, “Oh well, it’s not the end of the world that we only have one class together. Let’s see now, you have French and Country of Prism History in the afternoon. Good luck with those classes.”
I laughed, “Like I need it, besides, you already knew that I was taking those classes.”
Meaghan gave me a look, so I explained, “I already told you I was going to switch into them. They shouldn’t be too hard because I’ve been taking French for years, and I’m pretty good at history.”
“Oh, right, I remember now,” Meaghan said with a smile. As the bell rang, I couldn’t help but feel slightly guilty about not telling Meaghan the truth, that I was from the country of Prism… one of the main cities of Blanch too, so these classes weren’t that much of a big deal for me. I would rather be known for taking strange classes and be able to fit in, everyone joke about the my accent that only sometimes slipped out, or the slang that my country is known for. I just didn’t want to draw any extra attention to myself than I already would since I’m already known as the protégé that is supposed to bring the hockey team to the finals. That wasn’t such a bad reason to lie... was it?
