"Morning, boys! I'm surprised you're awake this early," she laughed, setting the plates in front of Kaz and Atticus before walking back into the kitchen to make plates for her husband and herself. The boys at the table mumbled their thanks, reaching for their forks sluggishly as they began to eat. Mrs. Morales returned a moment later, setting her husband's plate in front of him as she set her own at the other end of the table. "How about I get you boys some coffee?" she asked, ruffling their already messy hair as she made her way to the coffee maker. It was clear where Atticus got his volume from, and Kaz thought it was sort of funny how loud they were compared to Mr. Morales.
Mrs. Morales returned a moment later with mugs of coffee for them, setting them down next to the boys with shaky hands. "That ought to perk you up," she said before sitting down in her chair. The boys mumbled their thanks again, both reaching for their mugs as soon as they were set down in front of them. Kaz smiled a little as he realized Mrs. Morales had poured creamer into his for him, the pale liquid several shades lighter than Atticus' pitch black coffee. He downed almost half of it before returning to his breakfast, cutting into his french toast happily. Atticus somehow managed to chug all his coffee in the span of a minute or two, and was already getting up to get more.
Kaz rolled his eyes as he took another sip of his coffee, finishing his french toast before reaching for the plate of bacon in the center of the table. Mrs. Morales always made a ridiculous amount of bacon when he was over, since he had a tenancy to eat enough for three people. "What do you boys have planned for today?" she asked, sipping her own coffee as she looked over at them. Atticus cracked a grin, and Kaz looked over at him with an arched brow.
"I was gonna show Kaz that semi that got crushed by a train out in the back lot," he answered excitedly, and Kaz's eyes widened.
"You've got a semi that got crushed by a train? Dude, that's super cool!" he exclaimed around a mouthful of bacon, and Mrs. Morales chuckled.
"Yes, but be careful. Your abuelo moved it over by the cliff since it's so big, and the fence doesn't go all the way over there," she warned, her husband nodding in agreement as she spoke. Atticus nodded, now rushing to finish his food while Kaz grinned.
"We'll be careful, Mrs. Morales," he assured her, already finished with his french toast and in the process of downing the rest of his coffee. The two were finished within a few minutes, and they scrambled to throw their plates away and set their mugs and silverware in the sink before running down the hall. Atticus slid into the bathroom, rummaging through one of the drawers to grab a hairbrush out while Kaz jogged back into Atticus' room. He forced the door open, kneeling down to grab his duffel bag laying next to the mattress on the floor. He pulled out his own hairbrush, setting it to the side before grabbing a few pill bottles out of the bag. He opened them up, glancing over the labels to make sure he was taking the right dosages of the various medications.
Kaz tossed a few of the pills in his mouth, dry swallowing them before grabbing his hairbrush and walking into the bathroom. Atticus shuffled to the side a little, the two brushing through their hair quickly before running out and towards the front door. "We'll be back by lunch!" Atticus called before tugging Kaz out the door and down the steps. They walked quickly through the overgrown yard and out the gate, Mocha barging past to follow them as they began to make their way down the main road through the salvage yard. It took them almost fifteen minutes to get to the end of the road, the sea of scrap metal and broken appliances giving way to open fields only interrupted by masses of cars packed tightly together.
