When the next day rolled around, it was the Jazz Man that attempted to wake her up early in the morning without waking anyone else up who resided within The Shelter; a place where those who are displaced go to stay the night in order to get out of the cold. It was unusual for them to go such a "fancy" place as she would have described.
Their normal spot where they sleep was right underneath the Bridge of Castro, which was built in the late 8800's by Castro Fenero during The Great Fight. An era where the Humans decided that genocide was the best option to destroy them. Kill them. And throw their bodies into Emth, the red sea. Some have speculated that that is the reason why Emth's water remains a blood red color.
Venin told her that Castro had hoped that the bridge would stop some of the fighting within Helrit and would bring together two of Helrit's prominent districts together. However, tragedy struck after the bridge was built. Castro had suddenly died and no one knew why. It wasn’t long before the Bridge became the source of rumors and curses. Humans had claimed that those who have died rise and those who were alive fall and thus became the bridge known as the gateway between life and death.
She always thought it was silly that Humans would believe in the supernatural but couldn’t blame them. Their world was weird after all and filled with many mysteries that she had once stumbled upon and there was still so much to discover and the bridge was one of them. Whenever it was late at night, she would fall asleep on top of an old pile of clothes that she had gathered from the nearby trashcans of shops. Sometimes, before falling asleep, she would reach out and touch the cold water. Although it wasn’t the best place to sleep, it was still better than that place and softly she smiled.
But because last night was different, she wasn’t able to feel the freezing cold temperatures grip onto her joints, making them stiff. Or the early morning splash in the face by The Jazz Man. Instead she curled in a hard cot bed that was lined up with at least two hundred in a large warehouse with a pile of blankets laying on top of her.
“Child, you must wake up!” The Jazz Man whispered again, slightly shaking her.
Tiredly, she shook her head, digging her arms out from underneath the warmth.
[Cant we…just…] she could barely move her hands.
“No!” he interrupted her, “We must feed you! I not allowing you to leave without having a meal first! Even if it a small one.”
[…Fine…] she gave up.
Yawning, she pushed the blankets off of her body and threw her legs over the bed’s side.
[Why did we sleep here again…?] She lifted her eyebrows as The Jazz Man grabbed Adolph from underneath his bed.
“So that you can receive proper rest!” he replied.
[I do receive proper rest! Underneath the bridge, by the red river.]
“Yes, and you also sleep in until afternoon! Come, we will eat at Ricky’s with Venin! Then we shall meet Ares!” he clapped his hands and she smirked, following him out of the Shelter.
The Shelter was located on the outskirts of Helrit where the factories resided by Emth Ocean. The minute they stepped out from the glass double doors, their breath was taken away from the freezing wind and the smell of salt. Nothing else remained outside of Helrit but the ocean and she heard if you traveled west, you would run into May. Another city-state with its own problems.
“Nothing like waking up by the ocean in the morning eh Child? Even if its filled with death!” The Jazz Man laughed.
Death. Death was like a bittersweet song that she had many dances with. It would embrace her by the hand and swing her fragile body around on the crystal floor that revealed both of their true forms. Hers, a demon that will never find solace and it, a devastating incident. It would hum a comforting melody before she realized that there were many bodies surrounding the two and what they danced on was not a beautiful mirror but the blood of those she loved. And standing in the distance were cruel eyes, watching her, glinting a sharp tooth smile.
That is when she would run.
