Aydyn had been in his office, waiting on his partner to arrive with all the papers. He barely got any sleep last night, his mind had been racing with the new information he was going to be given today. He couldn’t wait to see how this would change this case, or if it would even be beneficial. He let out a breath and then leaned back in his chair, his eyes closing. “Hurry up, Cameron.” He mumble out of his breath, his leg beginning to bounce slightly. He was growing more and more impatient as the minutes passed. He hoped nothing happened to the evidence, or Cameron. Instead of being useless as he waited for anything to come through, he started to work on something else that could possibly help with the case.
He sat up in his chair and started to pull out his file cabinets, one by one trying to find where he had last put the papers he needed. He began to search more frantically, the let files he needed to check the worse he got. He couldn’t find the file anywhere, he knew that he hadn’t taken it home last night, all he took were the photographs that had been taken the night of the death. He slammed the file back closed and let out a breath, he couldn’t believe he had lost the papers. They had been so important to the case, without them they could go ahead and say goodbye to a win. He stood up and then began to storm out of his section of the firm, many eyes beginning to gaze towards him. He felt like all of them were judging him, like they knew that he had guaranteed the case a loss. He wanted to take a break, he needed one right now so he could cool off. He would hate to say something to someone because he was mad at himself, he didn’t want to jeopardize his own position. He wasn’t going to let his anger get him in any more trouble.
He sat in his car for fifteen minutes, his head against the steering wheel and his hands planted firmly on his knees. He had relaxed some, wanting to go back into the building but he didn’t. He knew that he didn’t have anything else to do that would keep him occupied. He slowly began to sit up in his seat, his hands going to pick up his phone from his jacket pocket. He checked the time and the shook his head, Cameron had been almost an hour late to work. He sighed and then typed it his password, starting to call the other male.
There wasn’t an answer for the first few seconds, his shoulders slumped down and just as he was about to hang up he heard a voice on the other line.
“Hello?” Someone said on the other line, sounding out of breath.
“Cameron, where are you? I’ve been at the firm for almost an hour now, waiting on you to bring with the evidence.” Aydyn wasn’t mad before, but now he was. After saying it out loud he couldn’t help but feel angered that his partner was taking so long. HE never let the male naswr before starting his next words. “You better have a good reason.” He said against and then leaned back, closing his eyes and beginning to rub the back of them with his free hand.
“If you would let me talk then maybe you would know what was going on.”
“Fine, but this better be quick. And you better be here soon.”
“Actually, you have to come to where I am, it isn’t far from the firm actually.”
Aydyn sighed and then reached over to pick up his keys, he started the car and then nodded to himself. “Where are you?”
“Come to Wanderlust, I need your signature to get the evidence. Also, something else happened earlier this morning.”
Aydyn could hear how uneasy the other male had sounded. Before Aydyn could squeeze any words out the other side of the line went dead. He felt nervous for what could have happened, very nervous.
He arrived at the store around half an hour later. He stopped his car, parking in front of the doors so he wouldn’t have to go searching for his car whenever they would leave. He got up and closed the door, his eyes searching for any clue about how he would have realized the place, which he didn’t. He had never been here before. The store was very small, it looked like it could have been a family business. Once he finally began to walk inside, his hands dug into his pockets, fidgeting with the keys that had been in his hand. He stood in the entrance, the tropical scent making its way to his nose. It was overwhelming, the smell was too strong and every piece of decor screamed homey at him. He shrugged and then pulled his hands out of his pockets, leaving the keys behind to sit in the pocket along with his wallet.
Aydyn walked slowly down each aisle, looking at the magazines and the different products that had adorned the shelves. One thing that caught his attention was a picture frame. He stopped in front of it and picked it up, bringing it closer to him so he could see it. Just as he had began to examine the tie-dyed frame, someone walked past him. THey seemed like they had been in a rush, not even acknowledging the fact that they had ran into someone. He turned on his heels so he could confront the person responsible for almost knocking him over, but by the time he did the person had already been gone. All he could see was a small blur of their black jacket.
He sat down the frame and then began to walk down the aisle, hoping to catch up with whoever the person was. As of now he wasn’t mad at them, just curious to see who it had been and why they had been in such a rush to get past him. He began to walk faster, trying to catch up to the other person. “Hey,” he shouted out, seeing the other figure stop momentarily, and glance back. He couldn’t make out the face, all he saw were a few strands of black hair that had been hidden under a hat. He took a step closer, which then caused the teen to run off.
“Aydyn?” Some asked from behind him. He had a good idea of who it was, and was sure that many questions would come along.
Aydyn spun on his heels, looking over at the male. ”I’ve been looking for you.” He put on his best smile, trying to convince Cameron that he had actually been looking for his partner, and not trying to figure out who had ran into him. He never knew how he had gotten to good at lying, he never used to be good at it. Or maybe it was because he never considered himself lying while on his job, just being selective with what he said to people whenever telling them anything about his cases.
“Whatever you say.” Cameron said, his voice filled with concern. “Anyways, just follow me. They have everything in the back.” With that, Cameron turned and began to make his way towards a hidden staircase, one that never would have been noticed unless you knew what you were looking for.
Aydyn slowly began to trail behind Cameron, his eyes glancing towards the door to see if he would spot the other person that he had been trying to step. He never did see them again, until he saw them leaving, a small bag had been on their wrists. His eyes then went back ahead of him, making sure he didn’t drag his feet while going up the stairs. It would be very embarrassing if he fell down the steps. “What all do they have?” He asked, walking into the dim room that had a small tv in it.
“They gave me receipts and footage.” Cameron had moved to the side to turn on a light switch, the room instantly beginning to get brighter.
Aydyn looked around , his eyes landing on the tv that had sat on the small table, a DVD played sitting on top, everything seemed ready to go. “Let’s get started.” He said quietly, his eyes then going to a briefcase that was on the table. “Could have told me you had all the other evidence.” He mumbled, going to sit in a chair. He automatically went to reach for the remote. Needing to turn on the footage so he could prove that he was right. He hated to say this, but everything was a competition with him. He was always competing against someone, even if he didn’t know who. He just wanted to be the best, and right now he felt like he was losing.
Cameron sat down beside him, he had everything gathered. He had somehow made the attic area into a small office. All the paper were stacked neatly, the receipts sitting next to the papers. This was what was driving Aydyn crazy, Cameron was showing everyone that he was better. Although that isn’t how Cameron intended it to be, that how Aydyn took it.
“The video is from May 11th.” Cameron said and then nodded, sitting back so he could watch the short clip as well.
Aydyn nodded and then started the footage up, his eyes wanting to take in everything at one. There hadn’t been any sounds, and he was slightly thankful for that. He didn’t know if he would be able to listen to the conversation that was going on, no matter how innocent the few exchange of words would have been. He leaned forwards so he could see better, he sat the remote down and kept his eyes trained on the tv. “That’s the day we questioned a possible suspect.”
Cameron nodded and kept his eyes on the screen, just like Aydyn had been doing, trying to find any kind of detail that would give away anything.
After watching through the same tape a few times, the pair them moved on to the other evidence that had been in their care; the receipts. Aydyn held the thin slippery paper in his hand, his eyes searching over the thin words as he shook his head. “This can’t be it.” He said under his breath, flipping the receipt over to the back, only to be greeted with a blank side. He slammed the paper down on the table, his head hanging down and he looked at his lap.
Cameron had flinched, his gaze going towards the obviously mad Aydyn. Cameron reached out and placed his hand on the other’s shoulder, everything in the universe seemed to scream out not to bother him at this time, to just let him cool off. EIther way, he knew that he needed to help Aydyn out. “Hey, look. It’s the beginning of the case, we’ll find whoever did this.” HE said quietly.
“Stop it. You don’t have to lie to me, you know. I know how to handle losing a case. I know that you just want to make me feel better, but it isn’t working.”
“I care about this just as much as you do. We will figure this-”
“Cameron. Just stop! It’s useless here, there isn’t anything here that can help us.”
“No, no. We just need to look at this from a new angle. Look, we can go back to the firm and talk about this while looking at all the evidence we have.”
At this point, Aydyn was glad that he hadn’t completely pushed the other male away yet. There was no reason to keep playing the victim role. He nodded and then stood up, picking up his briefcase that the other male had brought here. “Let’s get going then.” HE said quietly, beginning to walk out of the small room and down the steps. He walked out of his car and got it, waiting to see that the other male had left before he would leave as well.
At the firm had been a mess, walking in was very chaotic. This was possibly the busiest he had ever seen it before. He shook his head and then looked back, motioning for the other male to keep following him back to his office. Right when he got to the turn he was stopped, “Someone’s in there. I can’t remember the name, but it’s about your new case.”
Aydyn nodded slowly and then looked back, earning a small shrug from Cameron. “Thank you.” Aydyn said while watching the person walk off.
He walked into the room, his assistant railing behind him with the paper stacked in his hands. Aydyn’s eyes landed on the person that had been sitting in the chair. THey looked nervous. The more Aydyn looked at the person, the more he began to remember them as the person from that store that he had been in; Wanderlust. He took in a breath and looked back at the person. “Do you need help with anything, I can show you someone who can help you with your-”
“I know something to help with your case.” The person blurted out, not giving Aydyn time to finish his sentence.
“What?” Aydyn asked quietly, taking a step forward, confusion obviously showing on his face.
“What he means is, what do you know?” Cameron stepped in and asked.“Sit down, it’s a long story.” She started off and then sighed, noticeably fidgeting with her fingers.
Both men nodded, moving to picking up things to write on and with. They then settled down and looked at the woman, “Tell us everything you know.” Aydyn said while clicking his pen so he could write everything down.
