“Kenji, you’re an odd kid I’ll say that first of all,” Toshiro says leaning back in his chair. “All you seem to care about are Kaiju, most others your edge would have a few more things on the brain.”
Kenji stares at him. “Boss? Why do you want to separate me and Repi?”
“First off, don’t get me wrong. You’re not a bad kid, far from it despite your singled minded nature.” Toshiro says with a smile. “But your single-mindedness is also your biggest weakness.”
“What?”
“If all you have on your mind are Kaiju, you're going to go mad and lose yourself overtime becoming nothing more than a machine for battle,” Toshiro says. “Once you become like that, you’re doing nothing but hurting yourself and your partner.”
“Repigigas,” Kenji whispers. “So, you're saying I’m hurting him as is?”
“Somewhat. I won’t say you're doing it deliberately, more subconsciously. While they are naturally inclined to fighting Kaiju aren’t only monsters, they seek a battle one to test their strength in that way they're similar to us humans.”
“And just like humans, they can be led astray,” Kenji says.
Toshiro smirks. “Of course, you’ve heard this speech.”
“Yeah, it was your speech for your victory after you battle Tridroga. Back then everyone was still a bit wary of Kaiju because of the war, but you and the other Brawlers started to battles to put everyone’s minds at ease.” Kenji says happily.
“Well, it started as more of a way for our Kaiju to get some exercise and not lounge around all day. But after the association got officialized and set some ground rules, we were on the path to what we have today.” Toshiro says happily. “But since you know that, you should remember what the point of that little speech was?”
Kenji lowers his head. “It was to show the true Bond between Humanity and Kaiju that lasted all of this time.”
“That’s right, all of Humanity lived alongside Kaiju and suddenly one silly massive little war ruined all of that. But now we’re living in a time of rebuilding, and Brawlers such as yourself are the ones who are leading this charge.”
Kenji raises. “Then I should stay with Repi no matter what. After all….”
“But sometimes the best thing for two people is to live apart.”
“What?”
“Whether unintentionally or on purpose, we may carelessly hurt those around us. When that happens sometimes no matter how hard we try we cannot rebuild what was broken and we have to separate ourselves from one another.”
“Are you saying this is one of those times?”
“Possibly. I’m not really sure if it is or isn’t myself. But I can tell that something has become between you two, and it’s ruined our Bond.”
Kenji lowers his head. “I can’t think about what happened. Everything was fine until our second battle when I had that weird dream.”
“Dream?”
“Yeah, I had a dream there was this girl and when I woke up I was lying on the floor by the vending machines unconscious,” Kenji says as his body shakes. “And right now while I’m trying to remember it or picture her face my body trembles like I’m scared or something? The only thing that sticks out is a name.”
Toshiro stands. “Oh really, is this what happened?”
“Yeah, at least I remember, kind of.”
“I see, so that’s the game.”
“Game?”
“Kenji. I’ll give the two of you one more match.”
“What?” Kenji asks confused. “I thought you said me and Repi would have to split up?”
Toshiro moves towards the door. “I’m giving you one final test. Should you pass and regain control then everything can return to normal, should you and Repi will be separated?”
“Is that a deal?”
“Of course,” Toshiro says with a wide grin on his face. “Would I ever lie to you?”
“You lie all the time,” Kenji says with a smile on his face. “You say we’ll get one thing for dinner and then its instant ramen for a week straight, you say we’ll go somewhere and suddenly we’re cleaning the warehouse. You’re a constant liar Master.”
“Well that’s part of my charm, you can’t fault me for that,” Toshiro says leaving. “Now rest up and don’t dare think of leaving this hospital, understand me.”
“Right,” Kenji says nodding.
“Good, now let’s set the stage.”
“Stage?”
“Don’t worry about that for now, all you need to do concentrate on your recovery and your Bond with Repi. Got it?”
“Yeah,” Kenji says nervously.
Toshiro leaves the room and Kenji stares at the walls of his hospital room as he clenches his fist. “Repi please wait for me. We’ll overcome this hurdle and become Kaiju Kings, together.”
Toshiro walks through the hospital’s halls with a smirk on his face with Oriana and Dian waiting for him at the end of the hall. The trio walks into an elevator as Dian stares at Toshiro’s face and smiles herself.
“So, Dad, you’ve got a plan, don’t you?” Dian asks.
“Oh yeah.”
Oriana stares at him. “Wait, what’re you planning? Aren’t you just trying to help Kenji and Repi now?”
“Oh, I heard someone’s interfered.”
“What?” Oriana asks. “How is that even possible?”
“Don’t know, but Kenji said he met some girl in his dreams and his condition started getting worse after that,” Toshiro says.
“And you believe him?”
“Kenji is too truthful for his own good. If he believes he met someone; then he was either tricked, or he did.” Dian says. “So, what are you planning Dad?”
“If someone messed with my boy; then they might be planning something else. We’ll have to rely on our little Ms. Agent to dig up some details from her employers.”
“You think the Agency might know something?” Oriana asks.
“Yup. I know for a fact, and you're going to help us understand what exactly they know.” Toshiro says nervously. “And convince them not to throw us out of the qualification battles.”
“Eventually you’ll stop using me as just a go-between,” Oriana says.
Dian smiles. “Not anytime soon, so please head out and work for us, Ms. Agent.”
Oriana sighs as the elevator stops and she gets off. “Alright, I’ll do it. But the two of you better make sure Kenji and Repi are in top order for the fight!”
“Of course,” Toshiro says.
Oriana turns away and walks off with Toshiro and Dian simply watching her as they smile. Toshiro walks off as Dian stays on the elevator as the doors close.
“Don’t worry Dad, I’ll watch our idiot.” She says as the doors close and the elevator rises.
Toshiro smirks and walks ahead. “Alright, our hidden mysterious foes. Let’s see if we can’t drag you into the light.”
Meanwhile, inside of the warehouse Repigigas lays strapped to the floor as it sleeps peacefully. As it does its body moves around sporadically as it dreams the dreams of a Kaiju. As Repigigas dreams, Kenji seems to watch it connecting to its mind as it sleeps and he simply watches as his figure fades away.
Inside his hospital, Kenji breathes heavily as his body is covered in sweat and he reaches out his hand.
“I felt it, I felt Repi for that moment,” Kenji says struggling. “I have to do it, I have to work harder or we’ll both lose our dream. There’s no way I’ll let that happen.”
He takes a deep breath as he clenches his fist. “Let’s give this another try, I have to do this I have to make this work.”
Meanwhile, outside of the room, Dian watches with a curious gaze. “Work hard you, idiot. That’s your best trait after all.”
