I slipped the velvet dress over my head and struggled for a while to zip it. I sucked my tummy in and pulled the zipper that was on my side all the way up. I knew it didn't quite suit the task I was preparing for but we needed to have some fun.
"What do you think?" I asked, stepping out of the dressing room. Liam and Sebastian were my audience as I went through the outfits I thought I'd like to have.
"Simply beautiful!" Sebastian replied, smiling broadly.
"We aren't attending dinner Lola," Liam said, flatly.
I went back in and came back in ripped skinny jeans, sneakers, and a hoodie that said I'm not your babe in neon colors all over the front.
"It's very cool and comfortable!" I said, smiling.
"I'll look like I'm walking around with my teenage daughter," he shot back.
"You're way too young to be my dad," I replied, winking.
"Did you just wink at Liam?" Sebastian asked, awed.
"Did I?" I responded, rushing back to the dressing room.
I already had the perfect outfit picked out but I wanted to see him crack at least a smile! He was so lifeless, no pun intended. My last outfit was this cute teddy bear onesie. Sebastian was rolling in laughter, literally holding his side.
"I've never had so much fun! Liam, she's incredibly ostentatious," Sebastian said.
Liam was far from being amused, I'll tell you that. Zero emotion. I was sure he was close to snapping and dressing me up himself! It took me a while to get my actual outfit on. For starters, it was a two-piece suit; fitting cropped black pants and coat, long-sleeved white blouse, and bowtie finished with a pair of white Converse; a girl needs to be comfortable. When I stepped out, I knew I had them.
"So, what do you think?" I asked, turning around.
"Wow," Sebastian said, "I think I should prepare to retire."
"Not bad," Liam answered, a slight smile forming on his lips. "Put it on my tab, Sebastian."
I thanked Sebastian and said goodbye. I wasn't sure if I was ever going to meet him again. For an old soul, he sure had so much life. Liam, on the other hand, was hard to please. What was his deal?
"We start today," Liam said. "Remember all the rules and more than anything, never leave my side. We'll start by attending your funeral."
"That's today?" I stuttered.
"Yes," he replied. "Unless you wish to miss it?"
"No...I'd love to be there."
For a moment, the thought of attending my own funeral was nauseating. I hoped they had a closed casket ceremony. Who'd be there? My heart was pounding so hard.
"This is it," Liam said, going through a door.
