We didn't bother to ask Hawke what happened over the phone. He was acting like he was in a good mood. But Wilson and I both knew that something was up. What did he have to worry about? He was a straight-A student, he graduated from college at thirteen but comes back to high school because his parents want him to feel like a normal kid.
And now he's a lawyer, pretty young to be one if you ask me. But it was pretty much the only way he could make money at the moment. He could have lived normally and had a simple job at a Bonnie's Burger Joint or something. But he wanted more for his family and for his friends, us. So he took the job he was offered and stuck with it, even though it was a lot of nights where he didn't come for dinner.
We went home after that so we could have a movie night. Wilson was making popcorn and I needed a shower. Hawke had decided to make sure that no one he didn't know was stepping into the house. As I took that shower, I heard a loud thud. I got out of the shower slowly and put my pajama pants on. I slowly made my way out to the hallway with a razor in my hand as self-defense. When I saw the source of the sound, I sighed in relief.
Wilson had just dropped the bowl that he was going to put the popcorn in. After settling the situation, we sat down to watch the movie. Hawke reached into the fridge and grabbed a beer. I always kept some in there for him in case he came over and needed to chill out for a bit. Not that I would drink any, he just likes to have a cold beer after a long day of work.
Today it didn't seem like a long day of work. He got off work earlier than we were used to. So I wondered all night why he would want a beer at this hour. I decided that it was his choice whether he wanted a beer at this time of day. I relaxed a little bit and watched the actors on my television screen. Sooner or later I must have fallen asleep.
I woke up to the sound of yelling. I looked over at Wilson. His skin was pale and his eyes were wide open and staring at the ground. He was still laying on his side. I looked up and I saw Hawke arguing with a lady. I took one look at her red hair and my eyes went wide. This was his ex-girlfriend. And they were arguing again. I looked at her more and saw that she had a work outfit. Maybe they were business partners. Maybe that was what kept Hawke angry all day.
"You think it's all about you, don't you?" She stepped forward and glared at him. "You realize that I have a life too, right?"
"Woman, I don't have time to deal with your crap!" Hawke shouted back and shoved her out the door. "You were the one that sealed that deal with him!"
"The deal doesn't matter, Hawke!" She seemed like she wanted to cry. "I can't believe you're still mad about this!"
"I can't believe you made that deal with him!" Hawke seemed angrier and more disappointed than his ex was. "We were business partners, Penny!"
"We both know why I left you, Hawke." She started to cry. "You need to let the case go."
"And let the whole truth slide by that something else killed him?!" Hawke raised his voice. "All these years and now you want to tell me how to do my job?!" He got in her face. "Get out of my house and don't come back until you want to be committed to me and my case." He slammed the door on her.
We heard her little stingray drive away into the street. Hawke sighed and put down the broken beer bottle that he had in his hand. He went to grab for another, but froze and sighed again. He went to sit on the recliner and sat down in it. His head raised toward the ceiling. Wilson was shaking a bit from the arguing. I had to rub his back to help him sleep, which happened after a while of comfort. I knew Penny would come back. She always does, but only to tell Hawke that he is wrong about the case and that he should drop it.
