Alex
My first day of school was a blur. All I could think about was Kathy. She was in a new place and new school and had to deal with so many new people. I just knew that she was going to have had a hard time. I could tell from talking to her during the past week that she was dreading the first day of school. I have no idea how it went for her, but I was intent on calling her and finding out at the earliest chance I got.
With this one thought occupying my mind, I called her the second I got home from school. She answered the call on the first ring and I was so relieved to hear her voice. I almost didn’t realize how much I missed her and how worried I was until I heard her voice on the phone.
“Hey baby, how was your day?” I asked her.
“You know, same old,” she replied, “everyone is curious about the new girl and then they see me around in shorts because it was so warm out today and they think I’m crazy.”
I laughed. I loved my Kathy because I could always count on her to be able to make me laugh.
We talked for what felt like minutes but must have been hours. Not about anything overly important, just little things like my hockey season starting up, our old friends, the new friends she had made. Everything was perfect, until we were interrupted by a male voice on her end of the phone.
“One sec Alex,” Kathy said to me and covered the phone with her hand, her voice came muffled through the phone.
“Jeeze Josh, could you have taken any more time to get here?” I heard Kathy say.
I could hear a faint reply, but the words weren’t quite clear enough for me to understand.
I had started to worry about why Kathy had been waiting up for the guy when I heard her say, “Well, whatever, now if you don’t mind, I am on the phone with my boyfriend.” I heard her breathe into the phone before hearing her ask, “Alex, are you still there?”
I knew I shouldn’t have worried about her. She was loyal and honest and would never do anything to ruin what we have together.
“Yeah,” I answered, and since curiosity got the better of me, I asked, “Who was that?”
“Some friend of Tom’s who can’t get over how quote unquote hot I am,” She said, and I could almost hear her eyes rolling. “He carried my bag home for me so that I could run and get away from him after I worked out.”
I laughed, she really was the most honest and loyal person I had ever met. And yet, for some reason, after we hung up and I told her I loved her, I had this odd sinking feeling in my stomach. I couldn’t help but feel like something bad was going to happen and things were going to change very soon.
With a long sigh I put my phone down and tried to think about my hockey game coming up soon, or even the little homework that was assigned to me on the first day, but I couldn’t do it. My thoughts belonged completely to Kathy.
