Meaghan
It was the Wednesday before the homecoming dance and I was starting to get excited. My dream guy finally asked me to the dance, and I didn’t even have to drop any hints that I wanted to go with him. Tom managed to find a date as well, though he claims she isn’t as hot as Kathy. Talk about gag worthy, she is practically his sister.
My thoughts then turned to Kathy. No one had seen her all day yesterday, and I was getting a little worried about her. It isn’t like her to just disappear. Although, considering her episode with Josh after what happened in her history class, which was the talk of the school, I can understand why she disappeared. I just kind of wish she would tell me what’s going on. I mean, she still hasn’t told me what was wrong with her on Monday at lunch.
Just then, Kathy came into the kitchen to get ready to go to school. Although I expected her to be upset or frustrated, she was actually really excited.
“You look oddly happy this morning,” I commented dryly. No one should look so… perky in the morning.
A smile flashed across her face, “I am,” she said, not bothering to elaborate on it.
“Well, won’t Josh be happy then,” Tom said.
Kathy laughed, completely unexpected since she usually frowned and got frustrated when Josh was brought up.
I looked at her warily, “Are you sure you’re feeling ok?” I asked carefully, trying to see if she was sick or something.
She nodded and said, “I’ve never been better.”
“Well there must be something,” Tom said, “You haven’t been this upbeat in a long time. And you do know that Josh is going to be waiting for you, right?”
Kathy nodded with a look of fake sadness, “I do feel a slight amount of dread when I picture my reunion with my hopeless admirer.”
I laughed “If you ever end up together with Josh, I think I will end up passing out from shock or something.”
Kathy grinned, “So will I.”
We laughed together as we headed out the door and towards the school.
Josh caught up with us about a block from out house. I kept sneaking glances at Kathy, wondering when she was going to flip out on him like she has been doing recently.
Finally, when we were closer to the school, Josh looked at Kathy and said, “I’m guessing that you’ve agreed to come to the dance with me since you’re still walking peacefully with me.”
I held my breath, afraid Kathy was going to explode at him.
Instead, she laughed, “Josh, I would love to go to the dance with you,” she said, causing my mouth to drop open in shock. She then continued but saying, “But, I can’t.”
“What? Why?” Josh demanded.
Grinning, Kathy said, “I have to go to Carmine City University on Saturday.”
“So? The dance is on Friday.”
Smiling and shaking her head, “Oh Josh, you poor, poor silly boy, I have to be there for seven a.m., I can’t be spending the night before at a dance, now can I?”
Josh, Tom and I all stared at her as she turned away from us and rushed into the school.
This day was going to be… interesting.
