Zira half lay on the ground, looking between me and my idiot brother in shock. I suppose it isn’t every day you find out your best friend is related to two of the best mages of the century, especially when that best friend happens to be the biggest fuck up in the magic world. It had been a while since I had seen him this shocked actually, his face was so funny I found myself snickering.
“Holy shit, seriously?” He finally said, Lexis chuckling at his reaction.
Lexicon probably didn’t believe me when I told them that I wasn’t going to tell Zira who I was; more they probably didn’t believe I could pull it off.
“You seriously are a shitty best friend!” He exclaimed, holding his hand up. I grabbed his wrist and pulled him up. “I can’t believe you never told me that! Does my mum know?”
“She isn’t as dense as you, of course she knows. You think she just hated me because I was a delinquent?” Zira still couldn’t seem to believe it, looking as if he was going crazy.
Suddenly he froze and I noticed Lex and his partner both with he same expression on his face. What was going on now?
“Accept the summoning. You too Xerx. I’ll bring Mika.” Both Zira and Xerxes nodded at Lex before suddenly disappearing.
Damn mages and their teleporting abilities.
Lex turned to me, a more serious look on his face. “Could you see their auras as the teleported?” Ah, so it was like that. I just shook my head, pushing my left sleeve up. “Mum and dad still refuse to talk about me?” Lex nodded in response.
Normally when kids find out their adopted it is the parent’s who try to make it work if there is an issue. With us it was the other way around. We still don’t get why it was such a big deal to begin with, I mean we always knew our past was messy, being adopted wasn’t even a surprise. But no, they will only support us financially and let us live at home if we want.
“They still haven’t worked out what type of mage I am or how to sort out my control issue. At the moment it is just me producing too much magic. So no aura or spirit seeing for me.” Lex sighed, not being able to add anything to the useless update on my magic.
He took my left arm, inspecting the faded mark. “You really have no control, this is a hell of a lot of seals and charms.” Way to point out the obvious.
With Lex’s comment aside, he closed his eyes and whispered a spell, dragging his index and middle finger down my forearm. The barely noticeable seals slowly bled into a dark red from where his fingers were, once all the marks were coloured it felt like a weight was taken off me but a new weight had replaced it.
What my brother had just done was seal my magic. Every time I had to go to the Elecon building my magic had to be externally repressed, whenever I got close to the alter my magic went completely haywire. The seals weren’t a perfect though, which is why I keep having more added as time goes on. If I get too emotional my magic gets so unstable that even the seals can’t hold all of it back.
As I pushed my sleeve down, Lex put a hand on my shoulder and suddenly the scenery changed. I jumped back a little having a mini heart attack. “Some warning next time,” I muttered, my brother just waving me off.
Shaking my head, I turned to find myself looking at a group of teenagers, famous teenagers to be more precise, sat at a large table and looking at me in confusion. I mean, I suppose I was famous myself but it was nothing like this lot, they were legends in the making, Zira included. These guys are all magical prodigies.
Zira motioned towards the free seat next to him and I went over, slightly grateful – not that he would ever know. It was sort of unnerving being here with this lot when I was known for constantly causing trouble, whether intentional or not, generally it was a bit of both.
I noticed my best friend staring at me and I looked over again to see him tapping his left arm. With a sigh, I pushed my sleeve up again and showed him under the large table. “Damn, I haven’t seen some of these before. I think that’s a forbidden seal.” Even though he had kept his voice at a whisper, everyone could hear him in the silent room, it didn’t help that they were watching us like hawks.
Right, I guess they were used to Zira’s popular act, they probably hadn’t seen him geek out before. They probably also thought the rumours about us two being friends was bullshit, I know I would have.
I heard a door open and turned to the raised table at the front, the council walking in from the doors on either side and Elder sitting down in the middle seat. “Since everyone is now here, I believe we should start.” Connifer, the councillor who happened to be Lex’s ‘twin’, spoke. “I do not think there is a need for introductions.” There was a slight edge to her voice, so something really happened at the reading then.
All the council members sat down and we all waited for one of them to explain what was actually going on, me leaning back in my seat. The Elder was obviously the one to speak.
“The stars have revealed those mages who could play a part in the team of the prophecy, made up of the 10 mages sat at this table.” He motioned to us. That was huge, enough of a deal for these elite kids to burst into chatter, it meant that one of these kids were the Elix – a powerful mage that came around every half century as well as a key part of the prophecy.
Hang on, wait, did he say 10? I looked around the table and counted, there were 9 of them including Zira. They can’t be serious! “No, Mika, there is no mistake. The stars most definitely mentioned you, as always someone passed out. As did Zira.” The stars have lost it!
I wasn’t so much surprised by the passing out, both me and Zira possessed a lot of magic. The main difference was that he was clever and he could control his magic. But what else could you expect of a prodigy, one from the Emerson family too.
On the other hand, I still didn’t believe the stars actually mentioned me in terms of possibly being part of the team who would support the Elix. The magic I could do was ridiculous, while there are things I can do they are all things that this lot would pick up in hours over the next couple of years.
The other kids were now looking at Zira and I didn’t need to be able to read minds or interpret auras to know what they were thinking; they were probably all wondering if my super OP friend was the Elix. If I was being honest I suspected it too, even without my fiction logic, Zira was truly one of a kind as well as everything you would expect from the Elix – if you ignore his bad personality. I am sort of expecting it actually.
“Due to this, from next week, all of you will form a special class to assess and prepare you,” the Elder continued. “You will all be required to complete the curriculum as well as the additional year needed to be recognised as an official Elecon mage. You will have more frequent examinations to make sure you are all on par with what is expected, none of you were normal students but none of you are elitists either.
“Councillor Harrison and Rhynes – who I am sure you all know are also teachers at the academy – will overseeing your regular studies whilst you receive magic training from the Enoxion, the strongest group within the Elecon field mages.” He motioned somewhere behind me and we all turned to see my brother’s group standing there, I hadn’t even noticed them. “You will each be paired with a member and they will serve as a mentor.
“Of course, your families are all aware of these changes.” What a note to end on, parental consent; it was almost funny, almost.
