High street of Numbani, and it is market day. The spring sun is out for the first time this year and everybody seems to have a good day. A long, blank and black hair is swaying from side to side in the wind, and the long dark skinned legs are moving fast and with intention. She stops at a stand with small plushies and she takes up a small purple squid, and smiles.
She looks at it for a long time, when a rusty dark voice interrupts her daydream of memories with Sombra. She looks down and her face brightens up in a big smile, that only she can manage. Symmetra gives Torbjörn a big hug and they start talking.
“I know who that’s for, my friend” he said with a heartily laugh. “She’s coming tonight to watch the game?”
Symmetra nodded and looked at the squid for a few more seconds, then found her wallet in her purse. “I haven’t seen her for a long time and I want to give her something she can remember me by so she calls me some more - I miss her”.
Torbjörn grunted “Have you met anyone else? Who is even coming tonight?” Symmetra smiled. “Winston and Tracer both responded immediately that they would not miss it for the world. Reinhardt and Brigitte answered together just before the RSPV date, and they decided to close the inn for the weekend to make the travels here. D.va’s plane is supposed to land about…. right now actually. More are coming.”
She continued: “I actually have a lot more shopping to do, and I could use a hand to set the table once I get back - you have time to join me?” - Torbjörn laughed from his gut “of course, my dear. Lead the way!”
The pair left the market and walked towards the big grocery store. Game night calls for lots of sweets and snacks, possibly some small appetizers to take the hunger. They were about to walk past the liquor department, when Symmetra abruptly stopped, deep in thought. Torbjörn walked a few more steps before realizing he had lost her. He turned around and looked at her. “Should we?” she asked. Torbjörn looked at the shelves. “What’s the monkeys favourite beverage?” They started laughing, as both remembered how entertaining Winston got at the christmas party. They walked into the departments floor space.
When they got back to Symmetra’s apartment, both carrying grocery bags like it was the end of the world, she unlocked the door and stepped in - lights was on and music was playing. Symmetra mumbled: “oh. Sombra must have let herself in while I was gone” and she added “HONEY, I’M HOME...!” and both started giggling when they could her Sombra laughing in the next room.
Sombra joined them quickly in the hallway “here, let me help with that - I already took the liberty to set up the couches so we had as many spaces as possible for the gang to watch the game later! Which table cloth do you want for the table? We aren’t doing full on dinner, right?” Symmetra nodded: “Yeah it’s just gonna be some snacks and other easy to snack on goods. Take the beautiful shimmy dark blue cloth from the bottom drawer just where the cookie jar stands.”
Sombra grabbed a cookie from the jar and opened the drawer and she took out the table cloth, removed the flower from the couch table when Symmetra interrupted her “I actually want that on the table in the kitchen - we start the party there as the party starts like 2 hours before game time, and nobody wants to watch the warm up for that long without doing anything else. My plan was that we started hanging out in the kitching before going into the living room - I actually want the carpet in the living room under the coffee table removed and the plastic tablecloth on the table. I will need to deal with whatever happens to the couch should anything happen” Sombra looked a bit surprised but quickly walked back into the kitchen and put on the cloth on the table.
Torbjörn started unpacking the groceries, Symmetra found some bowls and plates, while Sombra prepared the living room by removing the carpet and putting on the plastic cloth on the table. She removed the decorative pillows and threw them in the bedroom.
When she came back out in the kitchen, the table with snacks and plates and glasses looked fabulous, really festive. Music was blaring out from the speakers, filling the whole apartment with a rhythm that would make even Reaper dance. The doorbell rang and Symmetra opened the door, and Mercy jumped at her with a big hug. A type of hug that only Mercy can give, which feels like healing, like sun on your face after a grey day, like hot tea on a cold morning, or a cool breeze on a hot summer day.
Sombra quickly gave her a glass with the welcome mix drink and before they could even close the door, Reinhardt and Brigitte stepped in. Like always, Reinhardts presence fills the entire room with the feeling of togetherness, embracement of life and happiness. He hugged everyone and started telling about the inn and how well it has been going for them since the battles came to a halt.
The doorbell rang yet again. Lucio and D.va greeted them all when Sombra opened the door. Hugs were given out, glasses handed over. Not much time passed by before D.va walked into the living room only to see the TV being off. “The warm up show, wasn’t it supposed to start like 10 minutes ago?” she yelled towards the kitchen. Symmetra walked in “yeah, I just didn’t think of turning on the TV already - feel free!” and D.va found the show and sat down on the stool at the edge of the couch. By heart, Lucio decided to play DJ for the night.
Doorbell rang. Mercy opened the door and a very happy Tracer and a less enthusiastic Winston stood in the stairway, but he did seem happy in his own way. He gave everyone a big monkey hug and he, to everyone's surprise, asked for alcoholic drinks. “It is truly time for celebration, guys. With the first Cup ever to be played, the battles are really a thing of the past” When he took the first sip of his second drink it dawned on him. What about Mei? He poked Symmetra on the shoulder “Did you invite Mei? I’d love to see her again” Symmetra nodded. The party needed two more people that haven’t arrived yet. Wrecking Ball and Mei.
Wrecking Ball had been helping out Mei for the past year at the Antarctica station which had been renovated and reinitialized when the battles ended. Just as Symmetra started to wonder where they were, the doorbell rang. Winston quickly ran to the door to greet some of his best friends, and he gave them a big hug, even before they could say hi. Everyone laughed.
Mercy stood in the corner talking to Sombra, but her eyes kept glancing over Lucio. She hadn’t forgotten about their kiss at the christmas party nearly a year ago. Actually, not even a day had gone by without she had phased out, reminiscing the memory of his soft lips closing on hers and the small tremble she had felt. She was well aware of the age difference, but she just haven’t been able to get past this, as she got a little surprised by his touch. So young. So innocent. Not to mention intense. She have had the option to call him, but decided not to as she didn’t want to press on more than she already had.
When she was about to take the first step in a journey towards Lucio, Mei got in her way and sounded all excited - and of course she was excited to see her too. It is not often that Mei is not on an expedition somewhere to figure out how to save the environment. She talked to Mei for a while, until someone yelled “20 minutes until game time! Empty your bladders, fill your plates and glasses, find a seat in front of the TV!” and the kitchen quickly emptied.
Mercy noticed Lucio walked out the room and she decided to take the chance - at the very least she had to apologise for last christmas, it was somewhat improper of her to take charge that evening. She waited just outside the door to the bathroom, when Lucio came out. “Can we talk for a moment?”. Lucio jumped, he didn’t expect anyone to be standing in the hallway like this. “I need to apologise for last year. It was improper of me to take you aside and kiss you like that”. Lucio cleared his throat. “No. The kiss was nice. I was really into you. I’ve been thinking of you a lot, but I could not make myself call you.”
He stepped forward, putting a hand on her arm. When he gently touched her cheek, he noticed she blushed. It made him smile, because there was nothing more cuter than making Mercy a little flushed. He leaned forward and their lips met.
He felt her soft lips on his, and this past year of his daydreams of kissing her flourished through his head, out to his fingers and toes and his whole body tingled. But something was different. He felt her body tremble against his. Somehow it intensified the feeling of the kiss tenfold. They didn’t say anything, and the kiss went on for a good while. They were suddenly interrupted by glass bumping together in the kitchen and they quickly took a step away from each other.
Symmetra looked at them. “You guys!” she smiled all over her face. The couple quickly but quietly approached Symmetra “oh nononono this was nothing!” - “we just talked, that’s all” Symmetra giggled “sure”.
They walked back into the living room just as the two teams was presented for the big game. Mercy sat down at Symmetras side while Lucio sat down by Torbjörn. Everyone was excited for this game, most has seen most of the playoffs, so everyone had a favourite team, some even a team that didn’t make it to the finals.
The horn sounded and the teams started running towards the control point with their non-lethal laser weapons, ready for the fight.
