I realised
A few months ago
Lost in the July snow
And a sea
Of happy skiers.
When a little boy
On our chair lift
Asked if I was a boy or a girl.
We were floating
Through flakes
And over mountains.
The earth
Was white.
The sky
Was blue.
And the distance
Was green.
And suddenly
I fell in love with the aspect
Of not being a girl.
Because all I wanted
Was to say boy,
But my sister
Beat me to it
And said I was a girl.
I knew
At the time
That I was gay,
But my gender
Was unexplored territory.
