Caffeine Keeps The Dreams Away

Caffeine Keeps The Dreams Away

Nov 25, 2018

Asura trembled as he looked down at the fallen man before him. His glassy eyes were fixed on the distant stars, and a sad smile was permanently etched onto his face. He could feel Luca's wrathful gaze burning into his skin. Surrounding the two siblings was thick smoke, so much that Asura could hardly breathe, but the smoke didn't seem to bother Luca. Ash rained down heavily on the two and surrounded them with a blanket of gray on the ground.

Luca swiftly closed the distance between them and grabbed Asura by the neck, lifting him up into the air with a firm grip. All Asura could do was swallow and look down at his brother's sinister blue eyes, his pupils slit like a snake's.

"Do you have any idea what you've done?" Luca growled, tightening his hold enough to dig his claws into Asura's skin and draw blood. He could feel the hot liquid trickle down his neck.

"I've done nothing." his voice was strained and quiet. "Put me down. Let's talk. We can figure this out."

His words were useless. There was nothing he could say that would convince his brother that he was innocent. Nothing could ease Luca's growing rage. Asura couldn't escape the pain that Luca would put him through for years. Billions of years.

"I've done nothing. Brother please, believe me, please, you don't understand what happened, Luca--" Tears streamed down his face as he pleaded, clawing at the hand at his neck that was now cutting off his oxygen. He was getting dizzy. His vision was dimming.

That's when he woke up, thinking, thank fuck that didn't keep going. I hate that dream. He shook out his champagne blonde hair and sat up slowly, looking around the dingy hotel room with bleary eyes and yawning.

He hadn't meant to fall asleep that night. He typically didn't require mundane, human things such as sleep. Although putting himself in a light coma for a short time was relaxing, he needed to stay awake. He couldn't-- he wouldn't let himself be haunted by his constant, recurring nightmares. Napping was a luxury Asura couldn't afford.

Now what do I do? He thought with a sigh, leaning back against his pillow. The town he'd ended up in was excruciatingly boring. The lights were always dim and green, garbage tumbled across the streets. Paranoid Warlocks crept along sidewalks, never willing to engage with with anyone they hadn't acquainted with before.

"Maybe a coffee will help," he mumbled to himself, rubbing his eyes and standing up. "And some beer." That is, if any store that sells those things is even open this late, he thought as his eyes landed on the alarm clock on the wooden nightstand. 3:03 AM. Screw it. Even if nothing's open, I could use a walk to pass the time.

With a sigh, he grabbed a T shirt from the floor and pulled it over his head before rushing out of his hotel room, slamming the door shut behind him and letting his feet guide him out of the abandoned hotel and into the heart of the trashed city, where lights constantly flickered and the occasional agonized scream could be heard a few doors down.

Asura squinted in the dark streets, growling in frustration when his pointless squinting did nothing but blur the already unclear outlines of buildings. He found it frustrating and idiotic that he could wipe out entire civilizations with the snap of his fingers, but couldn't see in the dark no matter how hard he tried. What designed me and my siblings and thought, yeah this makes sense. this'll work. Who did that? He thought angrily to himself.

On the bright side, Asura had the unique ability to burst into golden flames without hurting himself. The fire could provide him some light. However, ignorant humans who knew nothing of the multiverse and the highly powerful creatures that occupy it tend to react aggressively to seeing things like people using their burning body as a flashlight.

Asura shrugged. If anyone saw them, he figured he could just hit them on the head with a stick, and they'd wake up thinking they had a fever dream.

So Asura took a deep breath, letting the fire build up inside of him before shooting out of his body and lighting up the area around him. He found himself standing right next to a building. A familiar looking one, at that.

In front of him stood a very startled woman with long, strawberry blonde hair, pale skin, and scar across her cheek, and.... oh no.

The entire Multiverse is threatened when a creature who most thought had disappeared or died, emerges with legion of bloodthirsty demons who want nothing more than to consume the souls of mortals everywhere.
For some reason, Asura, a you-don't-wanna-know-how-old drunkard who cares the least about the fate of the Multiverse, is expected to stop it.

Good luck getting out of this one.
